The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of the so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country. In this episode of INFocus, we will examine whether or not the withdrawal of the US-led foreign troops will push the country to a bloody civil war, to what extent the Taliban is already in control of the country and what share of any future government they could expect to gain.

They went to the airport when the massacres began.

Residents of Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, knew that French soldiers were stationed at Bangui M\'Poko International Airport. And so when the latest round of fighting in the city began last week, they fled to the airport, hoping the soldiers would offer them protection. We landed at M\'Poko five days later.

The sectarian fighting that has led CAR, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the brink of collapse began last March when Michel Djotodia and his loose rebel alliance (known as the Séléka) stormed Bangui and ousted President François Bozizé. Djotodia appointed himself president and tried to integrate the Séléka into the armed forces, but it didn\'t work. Even Djotodia admitted that he didn\'t have control over most of the rebels, many of whom are said to be mercenaries from neighboring Chad and Sudan.

Bands of mostly Muslim Séléka rebels are now terrorizing the majority Christian country, raping and murdering civilians as they roam. Civilians have formed their own \

Israel has begun building a wall along a 1 kilometre stretch of its border with Lebanon, saying the barrier was necessary to boost security for an Israeli frontier town across from a Lebanese village.

An Israeli security fence already runs along the entire border but the military said defences needed to be bolstered with a 5-7 metre high cement wall between the Israeli town of Metulla and the Lebanese village of Kila. The Israeli military said the border project had been approved by both the United Nations and the Lebanese Army.

Some 12,000 UN peacekeepers are stationed in the border area in southern Lebanon to monitor a tense ceasefire since Israel fought a war against Lebanon\'s Hezbollah guerrillas in 2006. Israel is also building a security fence in its south, along the border with Egypt\'s Sinai desert, citing worries over militant activity and smuggling.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says she will not resign. In an emotional speech she pleaded with protesters to go home and and try to achieve what they want through the electoral system. Yingluck has called an early general election for February 2.

But protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban remains defiant. He\'s given Tingluck 24 hours to step down.

The demonstrators claim Yingluck\'s government is controlled by her brother, ousted leader Thaskin Shinawatra.

The protesters want to oust Yingluck and eradicate the influence of Thaksin. He was toppled by the military seven years ago and has chosen to live in exile rather than serve a jail term.

The protests was sparked by a government bid to introduce an amnesty that would have cancelled his conviction for fraud.

An aerial bombardment on the largest city in Syria has reportedly killed 76 people, including 28 children.
Syrian army helicopters dropped \'barrel bombs\' on part of the northern city of Aleppo controlled by anti-government forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
After the attack happened around midday on Sunday, the group said at least 36 people had died but that figure has now risen to 76.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is a British-based campaign group that aims to report human right violations and relies on a network of activists, lawyers and medics for its information.
\'Barrel bombs\' are a type of improvised weapon where explosives and other items such as nails can be packed into a barrel and tend to be dropped off the back of a helicopter.
The bombs therefore have little accuracy but can have a devastating impact.
Rebels stormed eastern and central parts of Aleppo in the summer of 2012, which President Bashar al Assad\'s forces have been unable to recapture.
Video of the aftermath of the attack showed people rushing through a narrow street covered in debris and destroyed buildings. A young boy appeared to be carrying a toddler as they tried to get away from the chaos around them.
At least 93,000 people have been killed in Syria between March 2011 and April 2013, according to the latest UN figures.

As its military and economy have grown, so too have China's dreams of dominating an island chain centered on Taiwan and including Japan's Senkakus. China's increased belligerence in the region is part of its plan to control the Yellow Sea, the South China Sea and the larger East China Sea. Its military doctrine refers to dominance over the "first island chain," which encompasses the East China Sea. The next step is dominance over what Beijing calls the second island chain extending from Japan to Indonesia. Some analysts have even speculated about plans for a third island chain strategy extending as far as Hawaii. As part of its plans, China on Saturday announced an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea effective Nov. 23. Its military will take "defensive emergency measures" if aircraft enter the area without reporting flight plans or identifying themselves. China's defense ministry warned in a statement that all aircraft that fail to comply with its new rules for transit through the zone could be shot down. Media reports say that the ministry issued a map showing the new East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, including what the Chinese call the Diaoyu Islands. The map of the new defense zone, pulled off a Chinese website, shows that it overlaps Japan's defense zone over the Senkakus, a group of uninhabited islands located south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan that sit atop significant oil deposits. Tensions escalated in February when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe denounced what he said was China's use of fire-control radar in January twice on Japanese targets in the East China Sea. Japan's Defense Ministry said that it sent jets up 306 times in the 12 months ended in March 2013 and 149 times in the April-September period in response to Chinese incursions. The islands became Japan's territory after it defeated China in their 1894-1895 war. It was only after a 1968 United Nations survey reported the huge oil and gas potential of the area that Beijing began to protest the 1972 U.S. return of the islets to Japanese control as part of Okinawa. The U.S. is obligated to defend the islands under the 1960 U.S.- Japan Security Treaty, which covers all territories under Japanese administration, including the Senkakus http://news.investors.com/112513-680586-beijing-east-china-sea-maritime-grab.htm?ven=fox_businesscp&src;=aurlaeu

Crisis in the Central African Republic
Crisis in the Central African Republic

They went to the airport when the massacres began. Residents of Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, knew that French soldiers were stationed at Bangui M'Poko International Airport. And so when the latest round of fighting in the city began last week, they fled to the airport, hoping the soldiers would offer them protection. We landed at M'Poko five days later. The sectarian fighting that has led CAR, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the brink of collapse began last March when Michel Djotodia and his loose rebel alliance (known as the Séléka) stormed Bangui and ousted President François Bozizé. Djotodia appointed himself president and tried to integrate the Séléka into the armed forces, but it didn't work. Even Djotodia admitted that he didn't have control over most of the rebels, many of whom are said to be mercenaries from neighboring Chad and Sudan. Bands of mostly Muslim Séléka rebels are now terrorizing the majority Christian country, raping and murdering civilians as they roam. Civilians have formed their own "anti-balaka" militias — balaka means machete or sword — to fight back. Meanwhile, many of those who aren't fighting have sought refuge in the only places they consider safe: houses of worship. And the Muslim civilian minority fears reprisals by the anti-balaka forces after nine months of Séléka rule. It's important to note that many people with firsthand knowledge of the war have told us that the religious aspect of the conflict — Muslim rebels vs. Christian civilians — is overblown. They say this is not an ideological war, but rather a war of identity that goes back generations. Regardless of the root causes, the United Nations and other prominent NGOs speculate that the situation could become far worse. Some 12,000 UN peacekeepers are stationed in the border area in southern Lebanon to monitor a tense ceasefire since Israel fought a war against Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas in 2006. Israel is also building a security fence in its south, along the border with Egypt's Sinai desert, citing worries over militant activity and smuggling.

In an emotional speech she pleaded with protesters to go home and and try to achieve what they want through the electoral system. Yingluck has called an early general election for February 2. But protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban remains defiant. He's given Tingluck 24 hours to step down. The demonstrators claim Yingluck's government is controlled by her brother, ousted leader Thaskin Shinawatra. Syrian army helicopters dropped 'barrel bombs' on part of the northern city of Aleppo controlled by anti-government forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. After the attack happened around midday on Sunday, the group said at least 36 people had died but that figure has now risen to 76. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is a British-based campaign group that aims to report human right violations and relies on a network of activists, lawyers and medics for its information. 'Barrel bombs' are a type of improvised weapon where explosives and other items such as nails can be packed into a barrel and tend to be dropped off the back of a helicopter. The bombs therefore have little accuracy but can have a devastating impact. Rebels stormed eastern and central parts of Aleppo in the summer of 2012, which President Bashar al Assad's forces have been unable to recapture.
