The black market is held along the banks of the Merri, and features stalls of all kinds of alternative pre-loveables and there is usually merriment, bands and mischief. Come for the bargains, stay for the hilarity!

Moonee Ponds is not the first place you’d expect to find a gothic clothing store: and particularly one specialising in Steampunk and Gothic Lolita! But lo! There it is! Their motto is ‘making fashion affordable again’ and this mother-daughter team up are making a lot of their own clothes instore. You know what that means? Potentially unique pickups!! Huzzah!
Further information about current stock can be found on their Facebook – they don’t currently have a website which is a little bit of an inconvenience. Meanwhile, you’ll just have to get a tram down Mt Alexander Road and see for yourself!

Tired of trawling the Op Shops only to find that some lightening-fast Vintage Shop has got their jammy digits in there first, taking the 1950s two piece mohair suits and sixties smart mod dresses, leaving you to rifle through the late eighties stained shell-suit collection? Yeah, me too. Well this could be the answer – one big glorious clothing Swap Meet! No money changes hands, meet other fans of vintage shopping and all in DIY community style. Brilliant!
The Swap Meet crew supplied information as follows:
It’s time to bring the Swap Land community together, and cut out the middle man. Swap Land presents the first (we hope, of many) clothes swap picnic.
What happens? Bring clothes or accessories you don’t want any more (clean and in wearable condition, please…if tattiness is actually part of their charm, fine, but please bring stuff you think other people would actually want). They’ll go into a central “pool”, and if you bring stuff, you can take home other stuff. It’s that simple. If you want to bring fancier/more expensive stuff, and barter for it one-on-one, that’s fine, but we do ask that you bring something for the central bank.
What to bring: Clothes, of course, but we’d love to make a day of it, so bring picnic food/drinks, and a blanket. We’d absolutely love it if (in the spirit of the day) you could bring something communal, so we can share treats as well as clothes, but it’s not mandatory. If you have a spare picnic blanket we could use to put the clothes on (we may need a few!), that would be wonderful – you’ll get it back when you go!
Clothing will range from alternative through to the usual stuff and possibly some baby clothes for the new families out there. We may try to ‘file’ it into rough categories if there’s enough.
Where is it? In the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden, in King’s Domain. If you haven’t already discovered this little gem, it’s just near the Myer Music Bowl. It’s World Record Store Day on Saturday www.worldrecordstoreday.com .
Record stores are the heartbeat of music. Those indie stores that are left survive because they cater to their consumers needs. The proprietors and staff have the knowledge to steer people in the right direction, they help musicians get their product out and give joy when the have the music you want.
I have a bad vinyl habit that needs more records. This week I got Zaireeka (Flaming Lips) and a Superfunk compilation from Second Spin in Carlisle St, the new My Morning Jacket album (complete with CD) and a soul compilation at Greville Records and a DVD of The Prairie Home Companion from Record Paradise in Chapel Street. Record Paradise in now run by Paul and Renee and is completely changed from Warrens Record Paradise. You can now find vinyl sorted into some sort of order. It’s still a crate diggers paradise, but they have added books and movies (helped by Paul Harris from 3RRR).
Warrens was run by possibly the unfriendliest and rudest proprietor ever. It’s next to the Police station at 100 Chapel Street (near Carlisle St).
If you’ve been there you know what I mean. But now it’s sweetness and light.
Basement Discs and Polyester will be having instore appearances.
Record store were and are a great source of knowledge. Support them on Saturday, but support them very week. It can be easier to go to a chain, but having some knowledgable discussion will be far more illuminating. You never know who you might meet. I met Nick Cave recently at Greville. He always supports local stores. In’t it time you did to.

I’ve not been out to investigate, but I’ve had a hot tip that Greville Records have a healthy collection of cult kitsch dvds now. Already famous for their large range of music on cd and vinyl, there has always been a reasonable dvd selection in this cornucopia of a small shop. But now, apparently, the selection has increased in size like David Banner becoming the Hulk!!
Their website has a small selection of the DVDs available there, and is endearingly oldskool but a bit low on info. So it may require a trek out to Chapel/Greville, which in itself can lend satisfaction of a number of other kinds… Comics R Us, Charley Weaver, Chapel Tattoo, Chapel Street Bazaar… definitely worth the trek.

From the people who have brought you Victorian Gothic for the past few years, there’s a new boutique on Brunswick Street! Called Devil Kitty, they’re focussing on the rockabilly/alt.rock fashion side of Vic Gothic’s range, leaving the original store to stock themselves up to the kohl-laden eyelids with more gothic clothing. Devil Kitty is only a couple of doors away from the original Vic Gothic, meaning that if you prefer not to have to choose one style or the other, it’s easy staggering distance to shop both.
With clothing for boys and girls instore, plus accessories, handbags and shoes, Devil Kitty is an intriguing alternative to the other rockabilly shop around the corner Faster Pussycat on Gertrude Street. The DK website has a blog which seems to be semi-regularly updated with photos and stock news.

Polyester Books – “the world’s freakiest bookstore”.
Aaah the memories of being a wee lass and seeing my first mind-boggling dose of counter culture for the first time: realising that not only were subjects like street art, tattooing, fetishism, the occult and alternative music things that other people were interested in, but they were taken SERIOUSLY! And people wrote BOOKS about them! The jolly all round squee-ness of realising that there are communities open to dissenting views and that you can be educated about them… well, let’s just say it warms the cockles of this slightly more grown up and savvy heart.
Polyester Books is indeed a paradise for the profane, a haven for the heretical, a counter cultural cornucopia. As their website shows, the topics you can browse through at Polyester include: Globalisation, Freaks and Tattoos, Mind Expansion, Satanic/Witchcraft/Magick, Pop culture, True Crime and ‘Weird Shit’. Of course, this also means you can purchase from their website too, but a visit is definitely worth your while, what with their charismatic staff, often great music selection and the ability to leaf through some of these titles to read and see with your own eyes what in fact they’re about before shelling out your hard earned or pressuring your open minded friends for a book on the UFOs that Ate Elvis.
The best thing about Polyester Books – they’re totally dedicated to supporting counterculture: so much so that they’ve worn 2 brushes with the law and seizures of property because the books they import are sometimes considered rather.naughty.indeed. And that from Norwegian Black Metal to Zombie Skinheads: they’ve really got books on absolutely everything kinda kooky at Polyester. Including some great local and import Zines.
The worst thing about Polyester Books: they should be open later – I guess there’s always the interwebs, but if this were Greenwich Village they’d be open until 4am: sometimes you don’t really want to read about satanic bondage in the whitehouse until after 1am, y’know. seriously.

For those of you who like a chop and a lick and a flying v salute… Metal Mayhem for years has stocked a reasonably good range of headbangers’ delights on vinyl and CD, and has also been one of the mainstay ticket outlets for Heavy Metal gigs in Melbourne.
In a surprise move, literally as well as figuratively, Metal Mayhem has now left the city squall and descended upon the – hopefully – droves of Metal minions in Northcote on High Street. Realistically, we deduce that high rents has kicked the Metal store out of the city limits and out to The New Windsor (Northcote), and wish them luck at such a less central location. Apparently, they do mail order though, which might save some Metal fans who find Northcote a difficult trek.

As many of you are now aware, Metal Mayhem is no longer located in the Banana Alley Vaults on Flinders St. Our new address, as of Sep 29 2008 is 459 High St Northcote. This address is between Northcote Station and Croxton Station if you’re travelling by train. There is also free off street parking along High St and free 2 hour parking at Northcote Plaza. The tram (Number 86, the RMIT/Bundoora Line) also runs right past the store.
We’ll be offerering a reward card upon purchase of new cds, as well as student discounts. We are also now stocks used cds etc as well as our comprehensive range of merchandise.
Don’t forget to check out the new Ilium album ‘Vespertilion’. Anyone that is a fan of ultra epic melodic traditional metal with power/progressive elements will love this. A great release from a local act and it features Lord Tim (ex Dungeon) on vocals. An absolute must, so support the local scene!
Finally, Jason Hodges the main person from Ilium and author, has a special going to Metal Mayhem customers.
