Australian troops leave Afghanistan
More than 1,000 Australian troops have completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan, marking the end of a deployment that has left dozens of troops dead and hundreds more seriously wounded. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Monday that soldiers had paid a "high price" during the 12-year mission, the longest in the country's history, but that their sacrifice had not been in vain. Unser Krieg - (1/2) Kampfeinsatz in Afghanistan - Doku/Dokumentation

As each of us has his own impression of Afghanistan that is predominantly marked with pictures of foreign forces, explosions and terror, we were privileged to have access to capture daily life and portrait some people of Afghanistan.
We hope the pictures you know will merge with the pictures you see and will enrich your view on the country in the Hindu Kush.
locations:
Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif
We wanted to go to other places as well but there were several incidents and security was too bad. Just one day after shooting at the blue mosque in Mazar-e Sharif a mob started from the very same place storming the UN building.
I have lived from 2006-2008 in Kabul doing my civil service for a humanitarian aid organization. This March I had the chance to go back with my fiancée to show her the place I love and to capture the beauty of this country with our cameras.
At the same time I made this as a tribute to a dear friend, who was shot in the streets of Kabul. Gayle inspired me in her love and dedication for the Afghans.
After a full summer with other work we had now the chance to do the editing.
Lisa-Maria Puy who composed the music for us was wonderful to work with. We met her on Zanzibar island and back in Germany she composed this wonderful soundtrack within just 3 days (and nights). She studied music at HfM Detmold in Germany and is a very talented artist and we hope to work with her again.

Last week the clip got published in the iPad edition of Süddeutsche-Zeitung Magazin.

Afghanistan's "Lucky Dustoff" Medevac
In October, NPR photographer David Gilkey spent a few weeks with the Army Medevac team known as “Lucky Dustoff." They are members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, currently deployed in the southern region of Afghanistan, in Zabul Province. David spent time with the unit, both at their base and on missions, chronicling their attempt to treat the wounded and the sick, especially among the Afghan civilians. It is their hope that the care they bring will help win the battle for the Afghan “hearts and minds” that is critical to the success of the overall mission.

Combat Rescue Afghanistan
Footage I shot of my deployment to Afghanistan in 2009 of Air Force/Air National Guard Combat Rescue/Medevac/Casevac operations in the Helmand Valley area. Responding at a moment's notice via the HH-60G Pave Hawk, CSAR is an advanced and highly capable rescue system for the coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan.
I wasn't able to arrange for a RED this time around, but have been able to record some decent HD footage on a new Sony Handycam. This was a very sobering deployment and probably my last in an "operational" capacity as I move on with my military career.
I will continue to push for a dedicated high quality filming team, and a "prime time" outlet for the public to maintain it's connection with our service-members.

MISSION AFGHANISTAN | Documentary Film 2013 HD
A Documentary on the Minorities of Afghanistan with English Subtitles. There is fear and desperation in their empty eyes. They have no livelihood and no work; and their growing children receive no education. Their daughters do not have much hope of finding suitable matches; and they are not certain where the next meal would come from. Many women and children live in Gurdwaré, Sikh place of worship relying on free kitchen And so, a young adventurous Afghan Sikh, Pritpal Singh, who had left Afghanistan 2 decades ago, set out from the UK to document the suffering of fellow Afghan Sikhs and Hindus communities in Afghanistan. The film "MISSION AFGHANISTAN" portrays the life and hardships of minorities in War-torn Afghanistan." Those who could afford it, left the country. Those left behind have hardly any means of support. They have no present and no future. These are Sikh women with children, widows and families left behind in a war-riven Afghanistan. Together with the Hindu community, their numbers are dwindling, as they live from day to day in many towns in Afghanistan. The situation of women is made worse because this is a conservative country where women are confined to walled enclosures and cannot go out to work. Even Gurdwaré of great historical significance are in a state neglect and disrepair. The country has been torn apart by war for decades and peace is not in sight when the Americans, British and other foreign troops leave. For minorities like the Sikhs and Hindus, the situation is quite hopeless. As a Sikh lady points out in the documentary, they cannot just depend on short term handouts by generous Sikhs from abroad. The need is for sustained support projects which set up schools and also provide work for the poorer Sikhs in Afghanistan. Much can be done by the more prosperous business Afghan Sikhs who are doing well in Sikh diaspora countries like the UK, Germany, India, UAE & US. Funded by Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Southall (UK), Pritpal had only a very limited budget. The main advantage of this low budget but professionally produced documentary was that, with one local cameraman, and dressed as an Afghan fluent in Farsi & Hindko, Pritpal was able to merge and mix with communities, and keep a low profile in a highly dangerous environment. Travelling on mined countryside roads, strewn with destroyed army vehicles, he was able to film remote places and intermingle with communities in a war zone. This is a country where tourists make attractive targets for hostage-taking by terrorists, and filming crews have to travel with convoys. Pritpal returned from this dangerous mission with, in his words, "The treasure of well over 1500 photographs and films of key historical Gurdwaré, Mandirs & Mosques of Afghanistan - something which has never been done in past!" He travelled to Kabul, Jalalabad, Sorkhrod, Agha Sarai, Charikar, Salang and Ghazni. Truly, his mission to bring out the truth about the desperate condition of his fellow Sikhs in a country where their forefathers lived for thousands of years, is a remarkable achievement. He loves his country of birth and is concerned that "if they migrate to other countries, our history and our historical sites will vanish". It is a highly informative journalistic documentary. In Hindko, English, Farsi, Panjabi & Pashto with English subtitles. Written by Gurmukh Singh - Ret'd Principal, UK Civil Service- published: 12 Nov 2013
