CRIMINAL proceedings against the teenager accused of murdering South Korean student Eunji Ban have been suspended until it can be established if he is mentally fit for trial, a court has been told.
The Brisbane Magistrates Court was on Monday told Alex Reuben McEwan, 19, was being housed at Wacol's The Park Centre for Mental Health, west of Brisbane, for assessment.
Legal Aid Queensland barrister Laura Rouse said criminal proceedings against McEwan had been suspended pending any future ruling by the Mental Health Court.
Ms Rouse said a full brief of evidence had already been requested from police and asked McEwan's matter be adjourned for at least three months.
McEwan, who was scheduled to appear in court via videolink, was not required for the brief hearing.
Magistrate Wendy Cull adjourned the matter for mention on March 6.
The application indicates McEwan's lawyers are intending to seek an order that the teenager was experiencing serious mental health issues at the time he is alleged to have murdered Ms Ban.
McEwan, formerly of Spring Hill, was last month arrested 36 hours after Ms Ban, 22, was found dead in a CBD park.
No family or friends of either McEwan or Ms Ban were present in court for Monday's mention of the case.
