Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code used the premise for its plot line. Biblical scholar and author James Tabor has recently affirmed his belief in a married Jesus, while Karen King announced the discovery of text in a Coptic papyrus fragment, alleged to be a translation of a lost 2nd century Gospel, in which Jesus is made to refer to "my wife" The 2008 documentary Bloodline by Bruce Burgess, a filmmaker with an interest in paranormal claims, expands on the Jesus bloodline hypothesis and other elements of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. Accepting as valid the testimony of an amateur archaeologist codenamed "Ben Hammott" relating to his discoveries made in the vicinity of Rennes-le-Château since 1999; Burgess claims Ben has found the treasure of Bérenger Saunière: a mummified corpse, which they believe is Mary Magdalene, in an underground tomb they claim is connected to both the Knights Templar and the Priory of Sion. In the film, Burgess interviews several people with alleged connections to the Priory of Sion, including a Gino Sandri and Nicolas Haywood. A book by one of the documentary's researchers, Rob Howells, entitled Inside the Priory of Sion: Revelations from the World's Most Secret Society - Guardians of the Bloodline of Jesus presented the version of the Priory of Sion as given in the 2008 documentary, which contained several erroneous assertions, such as the claim that Plantard believed in the Jesus bloodline hypothesis. By 21 March 2012 Ben Hammott confessed and apologised on Podcast interview (using his real name Bill Wilkinson) that everything to do with the tomb and related artifacts was a hoax; revealing that the actual tomb was now destroyed, being part of a full sized set located in a warehouse in England. His father, Haydar, was the sheikh of the Safaviyya Sufi order and a direct descendant of its Kurdish[16][17][18] founder, Safi-ad-din Ardabili (1252--1334). Ismail was the last in line of hereditary Grand Masters of the Safaviyah Sufi order, prior to his ascent to a ruling dynasty. His mother Martha, better known as Halima Begum, was the daughter of Uzun Hasan by his Pontic Greek wife Theodora Megale Komnene, better known as Despina Khatun.[19] Despina Khatun was the daughter of Emperor John IV of Trebizond. (She had married Uzun Hassan in a deal to protect Trebizond from the Ottomans.[20]) Ismail grew up bilingual, speaking Persian and Azerbaijani.[21][22] Although Ismail I did not only have Kurdish ancestry but also of various other ethnic groups,[23][24][25][26] the majority of scholars agree that his Empire was an Iranian one.[8][9][10][11][27] In 700/1301, Safi al-Din assumed the leadership of the Zahediyeh, a significant Sufi order in Gilan, from his spiritual master and father-in-law Zahed Gilani. Due to the great spiritual charisma of Safi al-Din, the order was later known as the Safaviyya. Like his father and grandfather Ismail headed the Safaviyya sufi order. An invented genealogy claimed that Sheikh Safi (the founder of the order and Ismael's ancestor) was a lineal descendant of Ali. Ismail also proclaimed himself the Mahdi and a reincarnation of Ali.[28] Life[edit] In 1488, the father of Ismail was killed in a battle against the forces of the Shirvanshah king Farrukh Yassar and the Aq Qoyunlu, in 1494 the Aq Qoyunlu Turks captured Ardabil, killing Ali Mirza Safavi (the eldest son of Haydar), and forcing the 7 year old Ismail to go into hiding in Gilan, where he received education under the guidance of renowned scholars. When Ismail reached the age of 12, he came out of hiding and returned to Iranian Azerbaijan along with his followers. Ismail's advent to power was due to Turkoman tribes of Anatolia and Azerbaijan, who formed the most important part of the Qizilbash movement.[

Lea Castle was built in about 1260; only one bastion of four now remains. The north side was protected by the Barrow. It was dependant upon Abbeyleix - it being the property of the De Vescis - for the Geraldines and De Vescis contended for property here and in Kildare. The outer entrance to the castle, which is in good preservation, consisted of a gate defended by a portcullis. It appears that in 1389 the O'Kellys possessed at least some of their ancient territory. In 1294 the castle was taken and burned by the Chiefs of Offaly. In 1315 Bruce came to Lea, on which occasion the church and castle were burned. About this time it came into the possession of the O'Dempseys. In 1346 the castle was burned by the O'Moores. In 1452 the Earl of Ormond took it from the O'Dempseys. In 1533 it was in the possession of the FitzGeralds. In 1598 it was re-taken by the O'Moores. In 1642 it was occupied by the Confederate Catholics, from which they were driven by Lord Lisle. In 1650 the castle was taken by Hewson and dismantled; the confused masses of towers and broken arches show the havoc made. The last person who took up his abode here was the rapparee, Charles O'Dempsey (Cahir na gCapall), the lineal descendant of the once powerful Chiefs of Clanmaliere. The church, which stood close to the castle, was built in 1307 by FitzGerald. Only a small portion of the masonry remains. Lord Galway, Earl of Arlington, planted a regiment of French Protestant emigrants near the Barrow. The Hollow Blade Company of Sword Cutlass in Dublin afterwards obtained this portion, and other purchasers obtained parts. In the end the company's part was demised to Ephraim Dawson, ancestor of the Dawson Damers, Earls of Portarlington. The O'Dempseys became famous as horse-stealers and rapparees, and were ultimately beset in a pass in the wood of Monasterevan and forced to surrender to a posse under the Sheriff.
