U.S. President Barack Obama shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro today at a memorial service for former South African president Nelson Mandela — an almost unprecedented moment between two deeply opposed neighbours.

Is Nelson Mandela in Hell?

I am not sure Mandela was an atheist as Gregory Paul asserts. He was a secular statesman and wasn't overly religious, but he also spoke of religion in glowing terms, so I think the jury is still out on this.

However, let's assume he was godless in his heart. Does that mean, from a Christian perspective, that he is now in Hell, not having accepted Jesus Christ as his saviour?

On my way into the office up in London today I took a slight detour via the statue of Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square. There are hundreds of flowers and messages there, some from children. A passing businessman stopped me and asked if I could take his photo on his iPhone. I obliged and took him a photo. I wondered which part of the world he was from.

History develops throughout our lives forming the backdrop upon which are lives are transposed. Shaping our world. Nelson Mandela made a difference in doing great things, but will those who opposed him make a difference too?

Farewell, Nelson Mandela...
Had to think of Nelson Mandela on my way home from work tonight. In the year 2000 we happened to know a woman in Berlin whose mother was living in Cape Town. She offered us an apartment in Cape Town for a  good price per night and so we spent 14 days there in February 2001.
3-4 days before the end of our holidays we took a taxi to the harbour and went on a boat trip to Robben Island with an excursion to the prison where Mandela spent most of his 27 prison years. The whole prison was in a good condition, clean and fairly new painted for the visitors. I always tried to imagine how it must have looked like when it was still in use...
We were led by a big black guy who was a former prisoner and his stories were harmless to the feeling that overcame us when we suddenly stood in front of Mandelas single cell. What a tight dungeon with no wall towards the corridor, just iron bars like a cage! No privacy at all, no real space to move. My jaw dropped with shock, fear and anger. I don't know how a human being can survive being locked away in a 4 m² cell for so many years without going mad or becoming an aggressive monster. I'm still wondering today and I deeply adore Mandela for surviving this treatment and staying a fighter for freedom and justice for all people, regardless what color their skin is. I looked up my very old archives and could find a photo of that cell that I took in 2001.
Mandela was and always will be my all-time hero and I'm glad and happy that he could reach a proud age of 95 after what he's been through. Farewell, Nelson Mandela...

I don't know how Obama managed to keep a straight face today,  has delivered his speech at Nelson Mandela's Memorial in South Africa.

It is a good job Obama wasn't in power when Mandela was considered a terrorist by the Western powers, or the axis of evil as they really should be known as! If Obama or Bush had been around at that time, then I am pretty sure Mandela would have been on their hit list and marked down for a visit from a fully armed Predator drone. One with a nice shiney new Hellfire missile attached, probably with sharks teeth on the front and Mandela's name written jokily down the side of it? 

In my opinion, Obama, Tony Blair, David Cameron, Bill Clinton and the like, had no place being there at all.....

Nelson Mandela was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Melbourne when he visited in 1990. Last night, the Councillors paid their respects to the great man through a Condolence Motion at the Future Melbourne Committee meeting.
