BBC Weather is the BBC's department in charge of preparing and broadcasting weather forecasts and is now part of BBC News. The broadcast meteorologists are employed by the Met Office. The longest-serving BBC weather forecaster is Michael Fish, who appeared for 36 years between 1974 and 2010 and still occasionally forecasts for South East Today.

The first BBC weather forecast was a shipping forecast broadcast on the radio on behalf of the Met Office on 14 November 1922, and the first daily weather forecast was broadcast on 26 March 1923.

In 1936, the BBC experimented with the world's first televised weather maps, which was brought into practice in 1949 after World War II. The map filled the entire screen, with an off-screen narrator commenting on the next day's weather.

On 11 January 1954, the first in-vision weather forecast was broadcast, presented by George Cowling. In an in-vision the narrator stands in front of the map. At that point, the maps were drawn by hand in the London Weather Centre, before being couriered across London. The forecasts were presented by the same person who had composed them, and had relatively low accuracy. The London Weather Centre which opened in 1959 took the responsibility for the national radio weather broadcasts. Radio forecasters were chosen by a BBC audition from the forecasters at the London Weather Centre.

Laura Elizabeth Brown (née Tobin, and known professionally by that name; born 1981 in Northampton), is an English broadcast meteorologist, working for the United Kingdom Met Office and the BBC, producing BBC Weather reports for BBC Television and BBC Online.

Tobin was born and raised in Northampton with her twin brother Mark. She attended Duston Upper School, gaining A-Levels in Mathematics, Physics and Art, and then studied Physics and Meteorology at Reading University.

On graduation from University in 2003, she joined the Met Office. On completing her training, she was assigned in October 2004 to the Cardiff Weather Centre, where she gained experience of broadcasting on BBC Radio Wales. In 2005, Tobin moved to RAF Brize Norton, providing aeronautical meteorology reports and briefings to Royal Air Force transport crews, and to the media of the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS).

Tobin joined the team of BBC Weather Centre forecasters at the end of 2007, eventually regularly appearing on BBC News Channel, BBC World News Channel, BBC Radio 5 Live, and the on-demand interactive services of BBC Red Button found on digital terrestrial (DVB-T) and digital satellite (DVB-S) TV. She also regularly presented the weather for the BBC News at One on BBC One.

Tomasz Schafernaker (born 8 January 1979) is a Polish-British metereologist and forecaster for the Met Office, who appeared on BBC Weather until 2010. He now appears on BBC South East.

Schafernaker was born in Gdańsk, People's Republic of Poland, and attended school both in his native Poland and in Britain. He was educated at the independent school St. John's College, Southsea, in Portsmouth, where he took A-levels in mathematics, physics and art, followed by the University of Reading where he gained a BSc (Hons) in meteorology.

He joined the BBC Weather Centre in 2000, working as a broadcast assistant, and became a presenter in the same year; this made him the youngest man to present the BBC Weather. He spent some time giving BBC regional forecasts across the UK, and presented on BBC World during the winter of 2003.

During 2004 and 2005 Tomasz studied at the Met Office college in Exeter and trained as a forecaster for aviation. He also worked for a time at ITV, as well as the London Weather Centre. Schafernaker rejoined the BBC in 2006.^{[citation needed]} He left the BBC in 2010 as part of a cost-cutting exercise, but continues to work for The Met Office.

Carol Kirkwood (born 29 May 1962) is a Scottish weather presenter, employed by the Met Office and best known for forecasting the weather for BBC Breakfast.

Kirkwood was born Carol MacKellaig in Morar, Invernessshire, Scotland. She was one of eight children and her parents ran a hotel in Morar; she was a Girl Guide. After attending Lochaber High School in Fort William, Carol gained a BA in commerce from Napier University in Edinburgh.

After graduation, Kirkwood joined the BBC's Secretarial Reserve in London and after a series of internal moves presented short slots on BBC Radio Scotland, and then BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. She subsequently worked as an Associate Director in recruitment and as training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire.

Kirkwood rejoined the BBC at Elstree Studios training department in 1993 as a freelance presenter, during which time she presented a bi-monthly programme Talking Issues for HTV West. In 1996 Kirkwood joined the new UK operation of The Weather Channel, but after it closed down in January 1998 she underwent training under the guidance of the BBC at the Met Office, before joining BBC News as a weather presenter. She has appeared regularly on BBC One, BBC News, BBC World News, BBC Red Button and the BBC News at Six, and has been the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast since 2008.

Chris Fawkes (born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England) is a BBC Weather forecaster. He appears regularly on BBC News, BBC World News, BBC Red Button, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 Live. He is also a weather forecaster on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, and appears occasionally on BBC Breakfast at the weekends.

Fawkes was educated at Marple Hall School and studied for a BSc in Geography at the University of Sheffield, before spending some time travelling the world.

He then joined the BBC Weather Centre in May 2001 as a Broadcast Assistant, supporting weather forecasters in London, presenting local radio forecasts and filling in for absent weather presenters in the BBC Nations and Regions. He also completed a short spell of broadcasting on BBC Four and BBC Red Button.

During the last couple of years^[which?] Fawkes has been studying meteorology with the Met Office College, and has completed his forecaster qualifications. He returned to the BBC Weather Centre in 2006, and is now broadcasting on more than one BBC channel.
