The time has come to think concurrently. Traditional software concurrency management leads to non-deterministic race conditions and deadlocks that are hard to reproduce and debug, leading to unreliable software. That means it's time to introduce math. Tony Hoare's paradigm of communicating sequential processes, or CSP, is not only a robust way to manage concurrency, but it's fun too! Join us to learn more about how CSP in the Go programming language allows us to reason more clearly about many things happening at once.

Abstract: The basic Laws of Nature sought by many branches of science, as well as the basic axioms postulated in many branches of mathematics, have historically been expressed in great generality as algebraic equations, or occasionally as inequalities. Nowadays these equations provide the theoretical foundation for the design of automated tools which are widely used to help scientists and engineers in pursuit of their goals. This is the way in which Isaac Newton still contributes to mechanics, Blaise Pascal to statistics, Clark Maxwell to electronics, and George Boole to computer Logic Design. How many Computer Scientists and Software Engineers are familiar with the laws which underlie their own professional practice? They are remarkably similar to the laws of arithmetic, taught even today to schoolchildren. I will present arguments that they are both generally true of computer programs, and provide the foundation for tools that are widely used in programming practice. And the laws of concurrent programming are no more complicated than those for sequential programming.

Sir Charles Antony Richard Hoare (born 11 January 1934), commonly known as Tony Hoare or C. A. R. Hoare, is a British computer scientist best known for the development (in 1960, at age 26) of Quicksort, a well-known sorting algorithm. He also developed Hoare logic for verifying program correctness, and the formal language Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) to specify the interactions of concurrent processes (including the dining philosophers problem) and the inspiration for the occam programming language.
Born in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to British parents, he received his Bachelor's degree in Classics from the University of Oxford (Merton College) in 1956. He remained an extra year at Oxford studying graduate-level statistics, and following his National Service in the Royal Navy (1956–1958). While he studied Russian, he also studied computer translation of human languages at the Moscow State University in the Soviet Union in the school of Kolmogorov.
In 1960, he left the Soviet Union and began working at Elliott Brothers, Ltd, a small computer manufacturing firm, where he implemented ALGOL 60 and began developing major algorithms. He became the Professor of Computing Science at the Queen's University of Belfast in 1968, and in 1977 returned to Oxford as the Professor of Computing to lead the Programming Research Group in the Oxford University Computing Laboratory (now Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford), following the death of Christopher Strachey. He is now an Emeritus Professor there, and is also a principal researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England.

Communicating sequential processes
In computer science, communicating sequential processes is a formal language for describing patterns of interaction in concurrent systems. It is a member of the family of mathematical theories of concurrency known as process algebras, or process calculi, based on message passing via channels. CSP was highly influential in the design of the occam programming language, and also influenced the design of programming languages such as Limbo and Go. CSP was first described in a 1978 paper by Tony Hoare, but has since evolved substantially. CSP has been practically applied in industry as a tool for specifying and verifying the concurrent aspects of a variety of different systems, such as the T9000 Transputer, as well as a secure ecommerce system. Tony Hoare will open with a 10 minute summary of language features proposed during his career. Each feature was motivated by the desire to reduce the range of programming errors by increasing the range of errors discovered at compile-time and ensuring that those which slip through can be detected and isolated at run-time. Then he and Bruce Tate will introduce the panel and ask the language inventors to give a five minute introduction of their language answering questions like:
* Was ease of writing correct programs and debugging incorrect ones important to the market segment (ecological niche) at which your language was aimed?
* Which particular features of your language met this goal, or tried and failed?
* For what features was correctness sacrificed in the pursuit of alternative goals – eg. compactness, familiarity, compatibility, efficiency, etc?
* In the light of hindsight, what would you have done differently, and why or why not?
This will be followed by a discussion amongst inventors of languages such as F#, Erlang and Hack.

Guest stars to watch out for are: Michael Turner who plays the Coroner (Jarvis Bennett from the Doctor Who adventure "The Wheel in Space"), Peter Baldwin who plays Mr Simms (best known as Derek Wilton from Coronation Street) and Noel Collins (playing Mr Lawton) who would later become well known as Sgt. George Parrish in "Juliet Bravo". Watch out at the end of the episode, where a crucial scene gets the Prisoner treatment. :)

Archaeologists have unearthed a massive stone tablet outside of Florence they believe will lead to a greater understanding of the ancient Etruscan civilization, an advanced civilization whose cities ranged up and down the west coast of Italy between 2800 and 2400 years ago, an Ars Technica report said Wednesday ... Before Brian Robinson finished 29th in 1955, no Briton had completed the Tour de France or made even a minor impact on racing on mainland Europe – and only two had tried. Tony Hoar also finished the ’55 Tour, in last place, but Robinson was the only GB rider to race cycling’s blue riband event the following year – and for a further six – and he was the first British Tour stage winner, too ...
