UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos on Syria
UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos on Syria
UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos appealed to the international community to keep the humanitarian consequences of the Syria crisis and the impact on civilians high on its agenda as world leaders prepare to gather for the General Debate in New York this week. She said that although it is important to "maintain the pressure to get a political solution" leaders also need to address humanitarian issues and the human rights abuses "that are really spiraling out of control inside Syria." Today an estimated seven million Syrians are in need of humanitarian support, with more than two million having fled to neighbouring countries like Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Egypt. Half of those affected are children. Ms. Amos, who had just returned from a recent visit to Syria, saw for herself the humanitarian challenges and concerns confronting both communities affected by the crisis and aid organizations trying to reach them. She added that whilst the use of chemical weapons has become the focus, there is a growing concern that the crisis, which has "very human face," is being "forgotten by the world." During her visit earlier this month, she met with Syrian authorities to discuss humanitarian needs and access, and hoped that the Government "would simplify the procedures to make our job easier so that we can be more effective and we can reach the people who urgently need help." Other than Syria, the humanitarian chief will also be focusing on other major crises including the Central African Republic where the entire population has been affected by the country's descent into insecurity, violence and despair. Since December 2012, 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and a further 60,000 have left the country all together. "We have seen over the last couple of weeks, increased violence, a lot of people being killed but we thought there was an opportunity given how fragile the country had become for the international community to really make a difference," she said. Persistent insecurity has severely hampered the ability of humanitarian organizations to reach those most in need. Earlier this month, two aid workers with the French NGO ACTED were killed north of the capital of Bangui. Ms. Amos called on the international community to focus on the country, help it rebuild its institutions, and give national and international NGOs working in the country the much need resources and financial support they need to reach people in need.- published: 23 Sep 2013

Verschweigt die UN etwas? - UN Pressekonferenz und Briefing Valerie Amos OCHA zu Syrien
Was kommt denn da hoch?
