Birla Institute of Technology & Science (shortened BITS or Bits Pilani) is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The university has 15 academic departments, and focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences. It is widely known as the best private engineering institute of India.
The institute was established in its present form in 1964. During this period, the institute's transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by G.D. Birla. BITS has established centres at Goa, Pilani, Hyderabad and Dubai. There are two more proposed BITS centres coming up at Vizag and Bhubaneswar.
BITS administers the all-India computerised competitive entrance examination, BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), Admission is merit-based, as assessed by the BITSAT examination. The fully residential institute is privately supported.
The Birla Education Trust was founded in 1929; the intermediate college became a degree college and later offered postgraduate courses. The masters programme in electronics began in 1955.
Pilani is a small town situated in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, India. Administratively, it forms a part of Jhunjhunu district. The place became popular since the establishment BITS Pilani.
As of the 2011 Census of India, Pilani had a population of 26,219 of which 52% were male and 48% female. The average literacy rate was 79%, higher than the national average of 74.04%. Male literacy was 82.14% and female 65.46%. 14% of the population was under 6 years of age.
Pilani is known for its extreme climate. Summer temperatures reach up to 50 degree Celsius between May and July, while winter temperatures reach sub-zero levels between December and January. Months of October and March are generally considered most pleasant. Pilani mostly suffers from low rain fall causing continuous drought for successive years but in coming years the rainfall is increasing subsequently.
Pilani Assembly constituency is one of constituencies of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in the Jhunjhunu (Lok Sabha constituency).
Pilani Constituency covers all voters from parts of Chirawa tehsil, which include ILRC Pilani including Pilani Municipal Board and Vidhya Vihar Municipal Board, ILRC Chirawa including Chirawa Municipal Board, ILRC Mandrela and Adooka, Farat and Sehi Kalan of ILRC Surajgarh.
