THE Territory Government has put a Bill forward to amend the Planning Act in a move it says will benefit both developers and the public.
The amendment gives developers the option to apply for rezoning and land development simultaneously.
It comes soon after the introduction of Building Approvals Online, an initiative that now lets registered building certifiers to reserve permit numbers and lodge documentation online.
Darwin developers contacted by the NT News chose not to comment, but Lands, Planning and Environment Minister Peter Chandler said it was a continuation of the changes supporting Territory development.
"It will not only mean we will see developments come online sooner but the public will also have any questions answered about a proposed development from the outset," he said.
"This will be made in addition to the rollout of the second stage of 'One-Stop-Shop', aimed at reducing the processing time and costs for developers and the department."
He said the Durack Heights development was an example of where the amendment would have resulted in quicker processes.
"The rezoning process took around 15 months to complete at which time the development application could then be lodged, taking a further three months," he said.
"Had the concurrent application option been available for Durack Heights, the development application could have been lodged from the outset getting the ball rolling three months earlier.
"If a developer chooses to take this option they can expect a reduction in the order of 12 weeks in the assessment and determination of their application, reducing costs for the developer and the taxpayer."
Mr Chandler said the amendment would benefit the public by allowing more transparency and help potential homebuyers.
"This government wants to encourage development so we can combat the housing crisis," he said.
