Remembering The 1960's - Cousin Brucie & Palisades Amusement Park
Bruce Morrow (born Bruce Meyerowitz on October 13, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American radio personality, known to many New York metropolitan area listeners as Cousin Brucie. Morrow's very first stint in radio was in Bermuda at ZBM-AM, where he was known as "The Hammer." Morrow began his stateside career at New York Top 40 station WINS in 1959. In 1960, he moved to Miami for a brief stint before returning to the New York airwaves the following year on AM 770 powerhouse WABC, another Top 40 outlet. Morrow's return to New York City came at the precise moment that rock and roll music was exploding across the Baby Boom demographic and Morrow found himself on the most powerful radio station on the East Coast at the onset of the so-called British Invasion. His main competition came from his previous station WINS, which featured "Murray the K," a DJ who claimed close association with the Beatles. "Cousin Brucie" quickly became a success on WABC's teen-oriented evening shift in the 7 pm to 9 pm slot. Morrow's ability to maintain a rapport with his listeners while smoothly mixing the diverse musical genres of the time (Motown soul, pop, hard rock, surf music, novelty records) and then seamlessly segueing into commercials for youth-oriented sponsors like Thom McAn shoes, local clothing outlets in the New York and New Jersey areas, and events such as concerts and drag-strip races, made him a commercial radio powerhouse and household name. He served at WABC for 13 years and ...

They went to Romania with Sunni Bloland, a teacher and researcher of Romanian dance. Jeff also went with Mihai David and Karl Finger in 1978 for 3 weeks that summer to collect new material for teaching. The Palisades group had no official connection to Columbia, but many of the dancers worked at Columbia University's Lamont Laboratories. The first place they danced was at a small church in Palisades, NY near work. The favorite dances were Romanian. Every Saturday night the teachers carried stereo equipment, records, tapes in their cars to the church, they made a map showing where everything was in the room, moved everything and set up. At the end of the evening, out came the map, and the room was restored. We danced in that church for many years, until one night there was a big party with Zlatne Uste, (a Balkan Brass Band) that lasted until the wee hours. The neighbors complained and Palisades FD had to find a new home. We moved south to NJ to the Alpine Community House right off 9W. Greetings from Palisades Amusement Park : A Postcard History
From its modest beginning in 1898 as a trolley park that climbed from the banks of the Hudson River up to the top of the Palisades, to its heyday as one of America's most popular amusement parks, Palisades Amusement Park provided entertainment for generations of kids of all ages, until its gates closed for the last time in 1971.
