Amtrak in Vermont: Summer to Fall Foliage
Amtrak in Vermont: Summer to Fall Foliage
September through October is a period of transition of the seasons and color of the leaves, but daily run of the Vermonter is matched by the same stroke of the watch each day. This video captures the southbound Vermonter, as well as one run of the Ethan Allen departing on its voyage, through the changing leaves in the Green Mountains of central Vermont. While most Amtrak trains look the same across the country, the uniqueness of its passing in Vermont is defined by the horn echo that channels through the valley walls creating a poetic symphony of the natural landscape. In 2013, the colors were the best at peak as they had been in years. Unfortunately, most of the good array of colors does not happen trackside, but I believe there are two shots in here that capture the foliage well. August 24: The southbound Vermonter crosses the Dog River and Route 12 shortly after departing the station at Montpelier Junction, already making its way to track speed (currently 59 MPH in dark territory). 0:00 - 57 - Vermonter - St. Albans, VT - Washington, D.C. Amtrak P42DC 104 August 25: After cresting the grade to Roxbury, the town that gives the subdivision its name (NECR Roxbury Subdivision), the Vermonter rolls across the Roxbury flat. 0:35 - 57 Amtrak P42DC 111 September 15: On a sunny morning, the Vemonter flies by a close camera at the straightaway at Milepost 67. 1:10 - 57 Amtrak P42DC 167 September 27: The Ethan Allen has just departed Rutland early in the morning, crossing Otter Creek in Center Rutland. 1:50 - 290 - Ethan Allen - Rutland, VT - New York City Amtrak P32AC-DM 700 September 29: At the base of Camels Hump, the Central Vermont railway makes one of several crossings of the Winooski River. I took some time to capture extra footage of the bridge and fog lifting off the river because the scene is too wide to capture in one frame. 3:00 - 57 Amtrak P42DC 4 October 1: The colors are passing peak at the summit of the Roxbury Sub, seen here as the Vermonter rolls across the Roxbury Flat along Route 12A south of the town of Roxbury. 4:30 - 55 - (Weekday Symbol) Amtrak P42DC 4 October 3: A couple of days later, the same locomotive in the cycle is seen leading the train through an explosion of colors on the Green Mountains along the Third Branch of the White River. 5:45 - 55 Amtrak P42DC 4 October 10: In the middle of the woods along the Dog River, the Vermonter sneaks past the waning foliage. 7:00 - 55 Amtrak P42DC 115 October 12: The Vermonter speeds by Norwich University with bells from the campus bell tower playing in the distance. 7:45 - 57 Amtrak P42DC 115 October 13: With the leaves gone except for the evergreens, the Vermonter passes Mud Pond in Roxbury. 8:30 - 57 Amtrak P42DC 108 Thanks for watching!- published: 13 Oct 2013

Astoria Scum River Bridge
Astoria Scum River Bridge is an unauthorized city improvement by Jason Eppink and Posterchild:

http://bladediary.com/tag/astoria-scum-river-bridge
For more than twenty years, a leaky pipe on 33rd Street beneath the Hell Gate Bridge viaduct approach submerged more than a hundred square feet of heavily-trafficked sidewalk under a festering cesspool of standing water. Astoria Scum River, as it was called, stretched the entire width of the sidewalk, and as winter approached, the river iced over and became particularly hazardous to cross.
Astoria Scum River Bridge was constructed to offer Astorians an opportunity to safely cross this hazard. The unauthorized bridge was a gift to the pedestrians of Astoria in the absence of successful municipal efforts to ameliorate the problem.
The bridge was made at zero cost entirely from recycled materials: an old work bench found on the curb, rescued screws from a disassembled desk, and a metal plate from an expired electrical component. It was installed and dedicated on December 30th, 2009.
On January 25th, 2010, Astoria Scum River Bridge was the subject of a commendation from the office of NYC Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., accompanied by a pledge to work with Amtrak to re-route Astoria Scum River off the sidewalk.
Two days later, Amtrak workers began construction work. Astoria Scum River was quickly routed off the sidewalk, and within a couple months, custom-made grates were installed to complete the project. The bridge, no longer needed, was de-installed on March 20th, 2010 and returned to the curb whence it came.

Freedom Tunnel
Filmed and cut by Charles le Brigand
All shots are video, no stills.
Under Manhattan’s Upper West side, runs the “Freedom” Tunnel. Built in the 30’s by Robert Moses, the passage boasts legendary graffiti murals and piles of debris remaining of the past homeless city era. After using it for only a couple of years, Amtrak discontinued the line and left a massive cavern which later became a shelter for street people. Progressively, the tunnel turned into a veritable underground metropolis where thousands of homeless were living in organized communities underneath the city’s skin.
The tunnel also became a prime spot for graffiti artists. Chris Pape, aka Freedom, was one of the pioneers and his work inspired the name of the tunnel. “Freedom” painted immense murals utilizing the unique lighting provided by the ventilation ducts, turning the tunnel into an extraordinary underground art gallery. Some of his most notable paintings survived for decades and are still conspicuous today (“Venus de Milo”, the “Coca-Cola Mural”, Dali’s “Melting Clock”,a self-portrait featuring a male torso with a spray-can head, etc.).
In 1991, Amtrak decided to reopen the tunnel. The shanty towns were cleared out by the police and homeless were evicted. Although deserted, the tunnel is now an active train line and a stunning experience for urban explorers.
It is a bizarre blend of dark and light, silence and rumble, solitude and multitude. As you penetrate the tunnel and walk along the tracks, the sunbeams perforating the ceiling and highlighting the railway gives the place a post-nuclear feel. Voices from children playing above in Riverside Park sound like lost souls and trains whistling and roaring through the ruins of the shanty towns send chills down your spine.
This is one of the most uncommon and fascinating journeys I’ve ever taken.

Glacier National Park, Part 4: Two Medicine Area
PART 4: TWO MEDICINE LAKE AREA
The Two Medicine Lake area makes a unique launching point for your explorations of Glacier National Park, especially if you arrive by Amtrak train. Filled with hidden trails, scenic wonders and the waters of the Two Medicine Lake area, you’ll no doubt feel the spiritual Blackfeet tribe history that has helped shape this area. Don’t miss Running Eagle Falls and a stop by the Glacier Park Lodge for a firsthand account of the Blackfeet culture.

My Amtrak Silver Star Trip between Richmond, VA and Washington, DC
This was taken on October 17, 2013. My mom and I got on the Silver Star for our trip to Washington, DC in Columbia, SC. I started filming when we left Richmond, VA. I did a little walkthrough of the train but couldn't go into the sleepers. My mom and I had breakfast in the diner before coming into Washington, DC. I watched the locomotive change and saw my first EMD AEM-7s before they go out of service by 2014. Enjoy! :) Feel free to rate, comment, and subscribe!- published: 16 Nov 2013
