2.64 million people live in Munich and the surrounding region. Whether they need to get to work or school, attend sporting activities, go shopping or simply make the most of their leisure time, bus and train services provide these people with an environmentally-friendly way of reaching their destination quickly. Public transport reduces CO2 emissions and fine dust pollution, as well as minimising levels of noise. A well-connected network of different transport options extends throughout the city and out into the country: underground trains, trams, buses and urban rail trains. The urban rail trains run a long way out into the surrounding area. As a transport association, we work together with our partners to ensure that these different modes of transport are perfectly interlinked. We have ONE network, ONE timetable and ONE tariff. Our TASK is to get people from one place to another in a sustainable manner. Our AIM is to increase our number of passengers. We have an important role to play here, which is why we advertise with the slogan "Climate protection is our drive". The Munich Transport and Tariff Association came into being in 1972 as a response to the city being awarded the 20th Summer Olympic Games. Munich needed a modern transport system -- and fast! The first important underground line led to the Olympiazentrum station. Since then, the network has continued to grow all the time. Around 2 million people now use the MVV's buses and trains EVERY DAY. Passenger satisfaction is reaching ever higher levels -- as is proved by regular customer surveys. In 2010 we also came out on top for GERMANY AS A WHOLE. Nowhere is public transport used so intensively as in the Munich region. Germany's largest automotive club ADAC has even given the MVV top billing when compared to other EUROPEAN local transport systems -- awarding it the accolade VERY GOOD. The city of Munich, the Free State of Bavaria and eight surrounding administrative districts are partners in the association. Around 50 transport companies deal directly with passengers. Chief amongst these are the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (the Munich Transport Company or MVG) and the S-Bahn München (Munich Urban Rail). The MVV GmbH coordinates the entire system. We plan regional bus services, come up with transport concepts that extend beyond the city limits, provide communities and companies with advice, carry out marketing campaigns and distribute all revenue to the various transport companies. Our research into transport issues provides a basis on which various fundamental decisions can be made in relation to matters ranging from transport planning to investment. One of our most important jobs is the setting of fares. We develop models and put forward proposals of attractive offers for a wide variety of different market segments. With 14 million hits per month, our electronic journey planner is Germany's number one timetable information system. The journey planner has also been available for mobile phones for quite some time now, so passengers can always find the information they need quickly, even when they're on the move. Since the coming years will see more and more people combining personal and public transport, we are supporting efforts to provide more parking spaces for cars and bicycles at train stations. This will enable car drivers and bike riders to use public transport more easily. Over the years we and our partners have risen to meet many challenges -- including the Oktoberfest, a huge annual event that welcomes six million visitors over the course of two weeks. The lion's share of the work for this particular event is carried out by the two most important transport companies in the association: the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft MVG and the S-Bahn München. Munich and its surrounding area will continue to grow. Munich is really taking shape as a European metropolitan region. Here -- in Munich and the region as a whole -- buses and trains have become part of daily life for many people. This is down to the closely interlinked MVV network, the frequency of the services on offer, the high quality of the vehicles and the professional staff at every company involved in the network.
