Knife fight at KZN high school
So the latest in school violence is the stabbing of a Matric boy outside his school in KwaZulu Natal and one in Newlands East. Reports say Thobani Philani Shezi, aged 21, was murdered by robbers outside Roseville Secondary School last week, while a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in what cops believe is a gang related fight outside Hillview High School in Newlands East. The 16-year-old, who was supposedly stabbed by a 21-year-old man who lives in the same neighbourhood, is fighting for his life in ICU. His liver, lungs and spleen have been punctured. A man was arrested after the stabbing and is expected to appear in the Newlands West Magistratre's Court on attempted murder charges.- published: 27 Jan 2014

DUB-DAY KZN 2012
*EXTENDED CUT - SEG 2*
On the 22nd of Jan 2012 the KZN chapter of VW Club South Africa organized a breakfast / run / cruise through 80 KM's of Durbans surrounding twisty roads. The organizers expected 50 - 60 cars max.
What followed was astounding.
212 VAG ( VW Audi Group ) vehicles took part in the run with a further support crew of 3 cars from GrindWorx, and that is only the cars we counted. With 215+ vehicles on one route the traffic was backed up for KM's. Finally culminating at a donated warehouse for a pro photoshoot and general chillout. The entire day went off with out any issues.
This video is an extended cut of our coverage of this event specifically for the people involved.
Special thanks to the VWCLUB.CO.ZA crew, especially Lawrence for his hard work in co-ordinating it all, Rob from Volksie, and every VW / Audi / SEAT / Porsche owner who took part in this run.
For the shortened version, with more cinematography please watch our channel for our up and coming podcast which will be dropping end of feb.
Forgive our film and editing, we are learning from scratch.

Post:
My workflow is quite easy. All you do is import the DNG's in AE. Adobe Camera RAW will automatically open and let you grade the 1st frame. After grading, click done and it will import all the frames with the same grade you did on the 1st frame. Set in and out points and render!
No noise removal was done and everything was graded in Adobe Camera RAW only.
I can't thank Magic Lantern enough for the work they have done. This quality and DR compared to H.264 is absolutely mind boggling. Now lets wait for them to get the hack 100% stable and enjoy our new cameras!

African Game Reserve (5D MK3 RAW)
EDIT: This video was graded with Davinci Resolve 9 while I was still learning the program. Resolve 9 had a pink fringing problem which had to be removed with a technique that degraded the image. Fortunately since then Resolve 10 has been released with much better debayering algorithm, the pink fringing problem gone and a special raw sharpening tool. Here is a new video graded with Resolve 10. The difference is huge! https://vimeo.com/77580463
After doing a few random test shots of landscapes etc, I decided to take Magic Lantern RAW and the 5D Mark III to the game reserve to film some animals. This was a very good test to see how the raw hack puts up in various lighting situations.
I used the 3x crop mode on a lot of these shots. I discovered that the crop mode has the same effect as the 2x extender in that it magnifies the image, so any imperfections of the lens get more noticeable, although this is hardly noticeable as you will see from the footage. Turning my 200mm 2.8 into a 600mm 2.8 with a click of a button was really great. I tried a few shots with a 2x extender and the 3x crop mode combined but then the quality is just not usable. All the shots were filmed from a car with a big pillow rested on the window.
Workflow:
Import into Davinci Resolve 9 and export proxies. Edit sequence in FCP. Import xml into Davinci. Automatically relink to original RAW files. Grade and export beautiful proress 4444 sequence.
Once you get to know this workflow it gets really easy. It's surprisingly similar to my h.264 workflow which was the following. Transcode to Proress with Mpeg Streamclip, edit in FCP, grade in Color, export. The only drawback is hard drive space but its absolutely worth it when you see the quality.
The part I loved most about Resolve's workflow is that you can apply the BMD Film color space and gamma to all the clips which turns them into super flat gradable footage. An excellent starting point.
For archive of the footage I decided to render all clips in Resolve to Proress 4444 with the BMD super flat color space applied to it and the white balance and exposure set as desired. I did a few tests and applied the exact same grade from a RAW clip on the same Proress 4444 clip and even at 400% there is no difference at all. The only difference between RAW and Proress 4444 is that you can change the white balance and recover exposure, so do this before you export to Proress 4444.
By archiving Proress and not RAW you save 60% on storage. Proress HQ is just not good enough as you can see the difference so be sure to use Proress 4444.

Project Rhino KZN: An united response to saving our rhinos
Africa has lost more than 100,000 rhinos in the past 45 years - proving that rhino poaching is one of the most lucrative of black market industries. 1,013 rhinos have been killed by poachers in South Africa since 2008 – 448 of them last year alone.
25% of South Africa’s Black rhinos and 20% of White rhinos reside on state, private and community-owned game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal. Faced by a rapid increase in poaching threats and realising that effectiveness lay in working together, the province’s leading conservation organizations – including Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, privately-owned reserves such as Thanda Game Reserve and top conservation NGOs – joined forces last year to form Project Rhino KZN.
The group works cooperatively to improve anti-poaching responses, share information and intelligence across large geographic areas, increase community knowledge of the value of rhinos – tourism value as well as job creation - and raise funds for priority anti-poaching and rhino conservation strategies. All the members have experienced losing rhinos to sophisticated poaching networks that operate from community level and up to the faceless buyers at the top of rhino poaching crime syndicates operating within South Africa. With rhino horn fetching up to US$60,000/Kg (R480,000/Kg) in Asia, and poachers earning as much as R240,000 (US$30,000) for a successful nights’ work, the temptation is high.
Anti-poaching work across all 16 organisations runs into millions of Rands and Project Rhino KZN is actively seeking support from business, donors and the public to help us protect more than 500 rhino in our care.
Cameron Pet Foods has signed an agreement with Project Rhino KZN that will see R2.00 from every bag of the company’s dog food sold through retailers, pet stores, co-ops and Veterinary clinics nationwide being donated to Project Rhino KZN’s Aerial
Surveillance and Security programme. Through this year-long partnership, pet owners around the country will be contributing over R500,000.00 directly to fighting the rhino crisis.
Reitz du Toit (MD) and Anire van der Walt (Marketing Director) and the African Conservation Trust’s Skydive for Rhinos team were invited to participate in a rhino darting and micro-chipping experience at Thanda Private Game Reserve in June 2012. The rhinos filmed in this video were both fitted with a foot collar and a micro-chip in their neck for tracking purposes on top of being ear-notched for physical identification. DNA samples were also taken (blood, skin and hair): these samples, as well as the micro-chips inserted into the horn, are used in investigations in the event of a poaching incident.
This was a once in a life time experience. One the one hand, not many people have the opportunity to get so close to one of Africa’s most magnificent creatures – to touch them, feel their bodies breathing beneath your palms, hear them snort as they’re ‘chipped and sampled’ and watch their ears twitch at the muffled sounds around them. On the other, you begin to realise the hard work, time and effort that goes into protecting these animals. Darting a rhino is no easy feat and can be traumatic for the animal – but we are facing a crisis and all must be done to protect them.
Only united will we be able to stop the scourge of poaching in South Africa. Are you willing to unite?
