South Sudan turmoil: WFP, Other aid agencies give food to people in UN Compounds
The world Food program and other aid agencies have come to the aid of thousands of families facing food shortages in U.N shelters. The U.N. Security Council approved plans on Tuesday to almost double the number of peacekeepers in South Sudan in an effort to protect civilians as reports of mass graves fueled fears of a worsening of ethnic bloodletting in the world's newest state. Aid agencies report that CAR faces dire humanitarian crisis
Aid agencies in the Central African Republic say the country is facing a dire humanitarian situation with more than half of the population in need of immediate assistance. The UN says more than half a million people have been displaced since the crisis started a year ago and a recent resurgence in violence in the capital Bangui, which left over 400 people dead, has forced over 100,000 people from their homes. But it is Christmas time and with 90 percent of Filipinos being Christian, NGOs are trying to put a smile back on the faces of the children. Leoniza Morales of World Vision said: " During this disaster they experienced fear and trauma. And we want them to have a sense of normality. We want to help them to process their feelings, emotions. We have given them some creative activities." But Tacloban was the Philippine city that suffered the worst devastation from the super typhoon, which killed more than 6,000 and affected the lives of 11 million. Mothers lost their children, children lost their mothers - no family was untouched by the disaster and thoughts of tinsel and Christmas lights are a long way down the list of priorities. For the adults, rebuilding their homes is the main priority - they would then at least have something to decorate next year. The Overseas Development Institute, a leading UK think tank, has found that al-Shabaab militants extorted global aid agencies for payments of up to USD 10,000 in order for them to be allowed access into areas of Somalia devastated by the 2011 famine that killed over 250,000 people.- published: 10 Dec 2013

International aid agencies halt Gaza projects due to Israeli blockade
International aid agencies halt Gaza projects due to Israeli blockade
International aid agencies operating in the Gaza Strip have halted their construction projects due to the Israeli blockade. Israel banned the entry of construction material into the enclave in the middle of last month alleging that construction materials were used to build a tunnel into Israel. According to the U.N agencies operating in Gaza cement and other construction materials brought via the Israeli crossing are solely used to build humanitarian projects in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Gaza Workers' Union members demonstrated in-front of the United Nations' offices on Thursday demanding an end to the Israeli blockade. All fields of life are affected badly when we talk about hospitals in particular and schools in general". Home to over 1.7 million people, the Gaza Strip has been battered by two Israeli wars and frequent Israeli military incursion. During the last Israeli war on Gaza in mid-November 2012, Israeli military attacks caused damages to several health clinics, dozens of schools and 15 NGO offices in the tiny seaside territory. The new Israeli restrictions are hampering the development of Gaza Infrastructure which has already deteriorated amid years of the choking blockade. Most of the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip depend on international aid agencies for health care, education and sanitation services. Experts say the Israeli blockade combined with the Egyptian military crackdown is making life difficult to bear for most Gazans.- published: 08 Nov 2013
