Medical experts criticize UNSCEAR report for playing down consequences of Fukushima nuclear accident
Medical experts criticize UNSCEAR report for playing down consequences of Fukushima nuclear accident
Medical experts are critical of the latest UNSCEAR report which plays down health impact of Fukushima nuclear accident UNSCEAR (the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effect of Atomic Radiation) recently published a report titled "Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation" with a special focus on levels and effects of radiation exposure due to the nuclear accident after the 2011 Great East-Japan earthquake and tsunami . The report has received criticism from medical experts who are researching on health effects of radiation. In the interview with 3Sat, Dr. Alex Rosen, a German pediatrician and member of German IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War), harshly criticizes the playing down of radiation impact by UNSCEAR and the nuclear lobby. Professor Wolfgang Hoffmann, a German epidemiologist and radiobiologist, holds views similar to those of Dr. Alex Rosen. He assumes that those who criticize this report would be officially blamed for panic mongering and that any claims for damages and compensation could also be preempted on the basis of this report. It seems, however, that the report did not receive unanimous support within UNSCEAR. According to Belgian journalist Marc Molitor, the Belgian delegation to UNSCEAR initially criticized the report, claiming that it is minimizing health effects of radiation after the Fukushima nuclear accident . When contacted by 3Sat, however, Dr. Vanmarcke, Chief of Belgian delegation to UNSCEAR, did not wish to talk about the issue which implicates pressure put on him and his delegation by the international nuclear lobby. Dr. Keith Baverstock, a former researcher at WHO, also commented on the lack of independence of WHO in the research of the health impact of radiation. The existence of the mutual agreement between IAEA and WHO signed in 1959 hinders independent research of WHO on the health effects of radiation .- published: 04 Nov 2013

October 24, 2013 (NYC, NY) Human Rights Experts call for immediate action to protect the right to health of citizens affected by the nuclear accident in Fukushima. Doctors Say UN Science Report Systematically Underestimates Health Impact of Fukushima Catastrophe Physicians for Social Responsibility & Human Rights Now present: WHAT: Two conflicting reports on Fukushima -- one by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health and the other by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) that will be presented to the UN General Assembly on October 25 at the 3rd and 4th Committees respectively. Mr. Grover, the Special Rapporteur, will speak about his report, and Dr. Rachow will discuss a PSR/IPPNW critique (psr.org/assets/pdfs/critique-of-unscear-fukushima.pdf) of the UNSCEAR report and how it can be strengthened. Ms. Inoue will discuss the human rights concerns regarding conditions in Japan. The global implications of these reports will be highlighted. Since the March 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, individuals and communities in Japan continue to be exposed to dangerous levels of radioactivity. There are serious concerns about consequent health effects for citizens in contaminated areas. Residents have a right to live in a safe and healthy environment, however, sufficient protective measures and support are not being provided. The right of access to medical treatment and the medical data about one's own body are being seriously denied. Experts will speak about how two UN reports impact policy regarding the lives and health of citizens currently affected after the nuclear disaster, and what should be done to provide immediate relief to protect their fundamental rights. Q&A; session will follow the presentations. Mr. Anand Grover, Esq. Mr. Anand Grover, appointed by UN Human Right Council at its eighth session in June 2008, is the UN Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. The position is honorary and he is not a staff of the United Nations nor paid for his work. He is also a practicing attorney in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. From November 15 to 26, 2012, Mr. Grover was on a country mission to Japan to conduct an independent investigation on issues related to the enjoyment of the right to health, including availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of health services, goods and facilities. Additional aspects investigated are, the underlying determinants of health in Japan within the context of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the events leading to it (including emergency response, recovery and mitigation with a particular focus on challenges and actions taken in response to them), as well as lessons learned and good practices. The mission involved meetings with Japanese government officials, non-governmental organizations, and local citizens affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Mr. Grover's report on his findings and recommendations was submitted to the Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in May 2013, and will be reported to the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on October 25, 2013.
You Need to Know About the Fukushima Crisis EDUCATE! FUKUSHIMA, NUCLEAR ENERGY By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers, www.truth-out.org October 24th, 2013 The story of Fukushima should be on the front pages of every newspaper. Instead, it is rarely mentioned. The problems at Fukushima are unprecedented in human experience and involve a high risk of radiation events larger than any that the global community has ever experienced. It is going to take the best engineering minds in the world to solve these problems and to diminish their global impact. When we researched the realities of Fukushima in preparation for this article, words like apocalyptic, cataclysmic and Earth-threatening came to mind. But, when we say such things, people react as if we were the little red hen screaming "the sky is falling" and the reports are ignored. So, we're going to present what is known in this article and you can decide whether we are facing a potentially cataclysmic event. Human Rights Experts Call For Immediate Action On Fukushima EDUCATE! ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, FUKUSHIMA, HEALTH, NUCLEAR ENERGY By Staff, www.PopularResistance.org October 22nd, 2013 Two conflicting reports on Fukushima -- one by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health and the other by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) that will be presented to the UN General Assembly on October 25 at the 3rd and 4th Committees respectively. Mr. Grover, the Special Rapporteur, will speak about his report, and Dr. Rachow will discuss a PSR/IPPNW critique (www.psr.org/assets/pdfs/critique-of-unscear-fukushima.pdf) of the UNSCEAR report and how it can be strengthened. Senior Adviser For Fukushima Cleanup Says Foreign Assistance Needed EDUCATE! ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, FUKUSHIMA, NUCLEAR ENERGY By Faith Aquino, japandailypress.com October 18th, 2013 One of the senior advisers of the Fukushima cleanup said that Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) needs foreign assistance. The utility operator may have already sought foreign assistance, but the ones currently available seem to be not enough to ensure that the defunct nuclear plant causes no more trouble. "They need to have a number of foreign firms to come in and assist them with the cleanup," said Lady Barbara Judge in an interview in Tokyo. Lady Judge, a lawyer by profession, was in charge of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) from 2004 until 2010. During her tenure as head of the agency, a number of nuclear plants were decommissioned while overseeing the cleanup of plutonium and uranium leak at the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) at Sellafield in Cumbria of northwestern England. Radioactivity Level Spikes 6,500 Times At Fukushima Well EDUCATE! ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT, FUKUSHIMA, NUCLEAR ENERGY By Staff, rt.com October 18th, 2013 Radioactivity levels in a well near a storage tank at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan have risen immensely on Thursday, the plant's operator has reported. Officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said on Friday they detected 400,000 becquerels per liter of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances -- including strontium -- at the site, a level 6,500 times higher than readings taken on Wednesday, NHK World reported. The storage tank leaked over 300 tons of contaminated water in August, some of which is believed to have found its way into the sea through a ditch. The well in question is about 10 meters from the tank and was dug to gauge leakage. TEPCO said the findings show that radioactive substances like strontium have reached the groundwater. High levels of tritium, which transfers much easier in water than strontium, had already been detected.- published: 25 Oct 2013
