The Modoc War ("Ishi's Legacy")
A short five-minute clip from "Ishi's Legacy" on California Native history. Starvation and the threat of outright slaughter forced the California Modoc Indians onto a federal reservation. Negligence on the part of white leaders would force them off it again in 1872. When Modoc chief Kintpuash (Captain Jack) led his people off the Klamath Reservation in Oregon to return to their homeland in California, federal troops under the leadership of General Edward Canby were ordered to apprehend the Modocs. What resulted is the so-called "Modoc War," in which less than one-hundred California Indians successfully outlasted eight hundred federal troops for more than four months. California - Tule Lake Migratory Bird Refuge
Psalms by the Lake. From my trip on June 2, 2009. Sorry for the jittery camera - it's VERY hard to hold it still when getting tight close-ups. Tule Lake is an intermittent lake covering an area of 13000 acres (53 km2), 5 mile (8.0 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) across, in northeastern Siskiyou County, California, along the border with Oregon. It is fed by the Lost River. Tule Lake was the crucible for Japanese American resistance to internment during World War II, where thousands of Japanese Americans met America's betrayal of their hopes and dreams with anger, defiance and rejection. Tule Lake was the largest and most controversial of the ten War Relocation Authority WRA camps used to carry out the governments system of exclusion and detention of persons of Japanese descent, mandated by Executive Order 9066. The Order, which eliminated the constitutional protections of due process and violated the Bill of Rights, was issued February 19, 1942 following Japans attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Two-thirds of the 120000 persons of Japanese descent incarcerated in American concentration camps were American citizens, an act that culminated decades of anti-Japanese violence, discrimination and propaganda. www.TuleLake.org The lake is located 1.5 (2.4 km) southwest of the town of Tulelake and is part of the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Klamath Project. The Tule Lake War Relocation Center, a Japanese American internment camp, is located to the east in ...

Vivaldi / Christian Aubin, 1965: Concerto for Guitar and Strings in D major, RV 93
Christian Aubin is soloist in this 1965 recording of Vivaldi's Concerto for Guitar and Strings in D major. (The LP label indicates that this concerto is played in C major, but it is a misprint. Nonetheless, I used the label as it was printed.) Roland Douatte leads the Collegium Musicum of Paris. From the extremely rare (and out of print for some 30 years) LP you see above, issued on the Nonesuch label in 1965, serial number H-1018 (monaural). 1. Allegro 2. Largo 3. Allegro The Library of Congress online catalogue record for this LP is available here: lccn.loc.gov The program notes on the slipcase are by the eminent Renaissance and Baroque music writer Edward Tatnall Canby, whose obituary you can read here: www.nytimes.com From this same LP: Vivaldi / Roger Guérin / Xavier Delwande: Concerto for Two Horns and Strings in F major - www.youtube.com

The Confederate White House in Richmond, VA
The White House of the Confederacy is a gray stuccoed neoclassical mansion built in 1818 by John Brockenbrough, who was president of the Bank of Virginia. Designed by Robert Mills, Brockenbrough's private residence was built in early nineteenth century Richmond's affluent Shockoe Hill neighborhood (later known as the Court End District), and was two blocks north of the Virginia State Capitol. Among his neighbors were US Chief Justice John Marshall, Aaron Burr, defense attorney John Wickham, and future US Senator Benjamin Watkins Leigh. Sold by the Brockenbrough family in 1844, the house passed through a succession of wealthy families throughout the antebellum period, including US Congressman and future Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon. Just prior to the American Civil War, Lewis Dabney Crenshaw purchased the house and added a third floor. He sold the home to the City of Richmond, which in turn rented it to the Confederate government as its Executive Mansion. Jefferson Davis, his wife Varina, and their children moved into the house in August 1861, and lived there for the remainder of the war. Davis suffered from recurring bouts with malaria, facial neuralgia, cataracts (in his left eye), unhealed wounds from the Mexican War (bone spurs in his heel), and insomnia. Consequently, President Davis maintained an at-home office on the second floor of the White House. This was not an unusual practice at that time. The house was abandoned during the evacuation of Richmond ...
