As today's nuclear industry looks to build more durable fuel rods (to withstand higher temperatures, xenon gas, and not react with water), the flip side is spent fuel will be trapped in tougher-and-tougher enclosures. This does not bode well for recycling. Instead, dissolving the fuel in molten salt offers both improved reactor safety AND easier recycling of fission products.

Thorium is an interesting nuclear fuel, but its not magic.
It still has many of the inherent problems of all other nuclear power. The very thing that makes nuclear power attractive (a million times more energy than conventional fuel) also carries inherent problems.
Nuclear power, suitably tapped is very safe, and a very clear source of power. However the idea of using nuclear power to fuel cars is just bloody stupid. To run a car you need about 200 kW, and the idea of putting a nuclear powerplant in a car that could supply this amount of energy is just bloody stupid on almost every level.

Molten salt reactors involve multi-component molten salt mixtures operating at high temperatures and the in-line chemical processing of the salt will be a crucial part of operating conditions. Fast pumping (for extreme heat transfer) will increase rates of corrosion.
Finding the ideal range of salt compositions to minimize corrosion (while maintaining critical concentration of fissile in core) and avoiding precipitation of reaction products in the heat exchangers is a very steep requirement.
To design suitable salt, information is required on phase diagrams, thermodynamic properties, and transport properties of these multicomponent mixtures. Good progress on phase behavior can be made with thermodynamic modelling methods, but the existing datasets on the elements of interest are very sparsely populated. First-principles-based modelling methods can play a vital role in supplying insight into the relationship between these properties and the underlying atomic structure of the fluids.

The Thorium Energy Conference, ThEC13, ran from 27 to 31 October 2013 at CERN, addressing the scientific and technical advances offered by thorium -- a silvery white metal four times more abundant than uranium in the Earth's crust -- in alternative nuclear technologies for energy production and for the destruction of nuclear waste.
Conference Chair Egil Lillestol invited Swedish diplomat and politician Hans Blix to talk about "Thorium Nuclear Power and Non-Proliferation". In a career spanning more than 50 years, Blix has been head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission.
Blix highlighted the advantages of thorium in terms of safety, disposal of radioactive waste, and nuclear non-proliferation. "Some people are worried about the spread of nuclear weapons through the use of nuclear techniques," he says. "With thorium you cannot get a material from which you can make bombs. It's very satisfactory from this point of view."
During the 1990s, CERN pioneered research into thorium technologies with experiments instigated by Nobel laureate Carlo Rubbia, testing the basic concepts of a thorium-fuelled reactor driven by a proton accelerator.

Thorium (
/ˈθɔəriəm/ THOHR-ee-əm) is a natural radioactive chemical element with the symbol Th and atomic number 90. It was discovered in 1828 by the Swedish chemist Jons Jakob Berzelius and named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder.
In nature, virtually all thorium is found as thorium-232, and it decays by emitting an alpha particle, and has a half-life of about 14.05 billion years (other, trace-level isotopes of thorium are short-lived intermediates of decay chains). It is estimated to be about four times more abundant than uranium in the Earth's crust and is a by-product of the extraction of rare earths from monazite sands.
Thorium was formerly used commonly as (for example) the light source in gas mantles and as an alloying material, but these applications have declined due to concerns about its radioactivity. Thorium is also used as an alloying element in non consumable TIG welding electrodes.
Canada, Germany, India, Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States have used thorium in various experimental and power reactors as fuel. There is a growing interest in developing thorium fuel cycle for various reasons, including its safety benefits, its high absolute abundance and relative abundance compared to uranium.India's three stage nuclear power programme is possibly the most well known and well funded of such efforts.

Paul Anthony Madden is a British chemist and Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford.
From 1984 until 2005 he was Fellow in Chemistry at The Queen's College, Oxford and also Senior Tutor of the college and Chairman of the University Information Technology Committee. From 2004 until 2008 he was Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions at the University of Edinburgh. He took up the office of Provost of The Queen's College on 2 August 2008.
He was awarded the Mulliken Medal of the University of Chicago for his achievements in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. He has served as Miller Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2001 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
He was appointed a member of the ad hoc Board of Electors to the Professorship of Chemistry in the University of Cambridge on the nomination of the Faculty Board of Chemistry.

Syd Ball (born 24 January 1950, in Sydney, Australia), is a former professional tennis player from Australia.
Ball enjoyed most of his tennis success while playing doubles. During his career he won 7 doubles titles and finished runner-up an additional 14 times. Partnering Bob Giltinan, Ball finished runner-up at the 1974 Australian Open. He achieved a career-high doubles ranking of World No. 22 in 1977.
Syd is the father of current tour professional Carsten Ball.
On 30 August 2000, Ball was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his strong commitment to tennis.

Hans Martin Blix (help·info) (born 28 June 1928) is a Swedish diplomat and politician for the Liberal People's Party. He was Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs (1978–1979). Blix was also the head of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission from March 2000 to June 2003, when he was succeeded by Dimitris Perrikos. In 2002, the commission began searching Iraq for weapons of mass destruction, ultimately finding none. In February 2010, the Government of the United Arab Emirates announced that Blix will be the head of an advisory board for its nuclear power program.
Blix was born in Uppsala, Sweden. He is the son of professor Gunnar Blix and Hertha Wiberg and grandson of professor Magnus Blix. He comes from a family of Jamtlandic origin. Blix studied at Uppsala University and Columbia University, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (Trinity Hall). In 1959, he became a Juris Doctor in International Law at the University of Uppsala, where he was appointed Associate Professor in International Law the next year.
