1903 Springfield Rifle
A quick look at my 1903 Springfield rifle, manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois. Caliber is, of course, the venerable 30/06 Springfield (.30 caliber, 1906). This particular rifle was fitted during WWII with a new High Standard manufactured barrel. It shoots pretty well for a rifle that's around 90 years old!

Alice in Wonderland (1903)
The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.
With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years.
Music: 'Jill in the Box', composed and performed by Wendy Hiscocks.
This restoration was supported by The Headley Trust and The Pilgrim Trust.

Old London Street Scenes (1903)
Made over 100 years ago, this footage shows a number of scenes shot around central London, taking in locations such as Hyde Park Corner, Parliament Square and Charing Cross Station. We see crowds of people disembarking from a pleasure steamer at Victoria Embankment, pedestrians dodging horse-drawn carriages in Pall Mall, and heavy traffic trotting down the Strand.
There are plenty of famous landmarks to spot here, including Big Ben, the National Gallery and the Bank of England, and it is fascinating to see the similarities between the customs of "then" and "now" - the dense traffic (mainly horse-drawn, with the occasional motor car) is highly reminiscent of today's London rush hour, whilst advertising on public transport is clearly no new phenomenon - in one scene, an advert for Nestlé's Milk seems to be plastered on every other vehicle. Wright Brothers First Flight, 1903 - A Day That Shook The World [HD]
Wright Brothers First Flight, 1903 - A Day That Shook The World [HD]. Orville and Wilbur Wright's first recorded flight caught exclusively by British Pathé in 1903. On December 17, news came through that two brothers had flown a curious air machine for more than a minute. To the sceptics, this footage proved that it was true.
A Day That Shook The World is the classic series that recalls the days of the 20th century that proved to be era-defining and pivotal in the course of modern history.

1903 Springfield Rifle
Shooting, showing, & comparing the classic 1903 Springfield rifle. This is one lovely rifle .30-06 bolt gun!
I like this rifle so much that I'll probably eventually have to have an A3 with the peep sight and/or the 1917 Enfield. Both of these have sights that are much easier for me to shoot.
It occurred to me a few days after posting the video that I should just stick the broken Red Rifle Plate on Ebay in case anybody would be interested in that particular range relic. It's been a staple throughout quite a few videos. Lots of hits on it, as well as a few misses I don't like to think about. :-) All proceeds go to a worthy cause: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item;=290772640642

Randy Newman - Dayton, Ohio - 1903
Randy Newman - "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" from his 1972 album "Sail Away" (Reprise).
On his third studio album, Randy Newman found a middle ground between the heavily orchestrated pop of his debut and the more stripped-down, rock-oriented approach of 12 Songs, and managed to bring new strength to both sides of his musical personality in the process.
The title track, which Newman has described as a sort of commercial jingle written for slave traders looking to recruit naïve Africans, and "Old Man," in which an elderly man is rejected with feigned compassion by his son, were set to Newman's most evocative arrangements to date and rank with the most intelligent and effective use of a large ensemble by anyone in pop music.
On the other end of the scale, "Last Night I Had a Dream" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" are lean, potent mid-tempo rock tunes, the former featuring some slashing and ominous slide guitar from Ry Cooder, and the latter a witty and willfully perverse bit of erotic absurdity that later became a hit for Joe Cocker (who sounded as if he took the joke at face value).
Elsewhere, Newman cynically ponders the perils of a stardom he would never achieve ("Lonely at the Top," originally written for Frank Sinatra), offers a broad and amusing bit of political satire ("Political Science"), and concludes with one of the most bitter rants against religion that anyone committed to vinyl prior to the punk era ("God's Song [That's Why I Love Mankind]").
Whether he's writing for three pieces or 30, Newman makes superb use of the sounds available to him, and his vocals are the model of making the most of a limited instrument. Overall, Sail Away is one of Newman's finest works, musically adventurous and displaying a lyrical subtlety that would begin to fade in his subsequent works. @allmusic.com

The Sick Kitten (1903)
'The Sick Kitten' is available to buy as part of the BFI 2-disc DVD set 'Early Cinema: Primitives and Pioneers' - http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/info_118.html
A century before Rolf Harris and 'Animal Hospital' audiences had more than their fair share of films about sickly pets, brave dogs and assorted animals in peril. Here, cinema pioneer G. A. Smith's tale features two under-aged vets and a feline patient. Records do not relate whether or not the kitten survived.
'The Sick Kitten' is interesting for more than its cute factor. It was possibly the first film to use a close-up shot that was not motivated by someone staring down a microscope or ogling through a keyhole. (Robin Baker)

The Great Train Robbery (1903) Full COMPLETE Original Film RESTORED
This is the longest and most comlpete version of the film available.
Filmed in November 1903 at Edison's New York studio, at Essex County Park in New Jersey, and along the Lackawanna railroad and released in December 1903, "The Great Train Robbery" is considered to be one of the first significant early US narrative films. Greatly influenced by the British film "Daring Daylight Robbery" (1903) it introduced many new cinematic techniques (cross cutting, double exposure, camera movement and location shooting) to American audiences. It was directed by Edwin S Porter and stars Justus D. Barnes as the head bandit, G. M. Anderson as a slain passenger and a robber, Walter Cameron as the sheriff.
Original film in the public domain. Print provided by the US Library of Congress. Film remastered, tinted and new soundtrack added in 2011 by The VIdeo Cellar.

Petticoat Lane (1903)
This fascinating film provides an authentic view of London's East End from over a hundred years ago. Flat-capped men flow in a Sunday morning tide down Middlesex Street - better known by its unofficial name, Petticoat Lane - just as they have for generations.
This most Cockney of London markets caters to the second clothes trade: at the time when this film was made, the market was dominated by the East End street sellers and the Jewish rag trade (almost all the names on the shop fronts are Jewish). As the camera pans across the market, we see the traders raised above the general level, barking at the crowd. The few women in the picture are stall-holders, selling patched-up trousers and restored boots, while a nearby card sharp tempts the punters. (Bryony Dixon)

Lower Broadway 1903
The film shows a view which appears to be looking north on Broadway at the intersection of Wall Street, in front of Trinity Church. The sidewalk along Broadway is crowded with people, and the traffic in both streets is very heavy. A horse-drawn streetcar passes in front of the camera [Frame: 2814], with a sign giving its destination as the "Courtland and Fulton Street Ferry."
