The Sound Of Music Star Eleanor Parker Has Died, Aged 91

The Oscar nominated actress was best known for playing the Baroness in the hit film

Eleanor Parker, star of the hit 1965 movie The Sound of Music, died Monday following complications from pneumonia.

The three time Oscar nominee died on Monday morning, family friend Richard Gale confirmed, telling the Associated Press that the actress "passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs."

While Parker was best known as the Baroness who lost out on Captain Von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer) to Maria (Julie Andrews) in The Sound of Music, she had a celebrated career before the 1965 film, which was actually her last major role on screen.

Parker received three Oscar nominations for Best Actress with the first two in 1951 and 1952 for her roles as a prison inmate in Caged and as Kirk Douglas's wife in Detective Story.

Her third nomination was for the role of Australian opera singer Marjorie Lawrence who battled polio in Interrupted Melody.

As well as starring alongside the likes of Douglas and her Sound of Music co-stars, the actress was also seen opposite Frank Sinatra in The Man with the Golden Arm.

Parker's best known role was recently played by Laura Benanti in the hugely hyped NBC live production, televised on Thursday. Benanti tweeted a simple message of condolence upon hearing the news of her predecessor's death, posting: "RIP Eleanor Parker. Thank you."
