Burl Ives - How Deep Is The Ocean (How High Is The Sky) (The Nashville Years 1961-1965) Music & Lyrics written by Irving Berlin. Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 -- April 14, 1995) was an American actor, writer, and folk music singer. As an actor, Ives's work included comedies, dramas, and voice work in theater, television, and motion pictures. Music critic John Rockwell said, "Ives's voice ... had the sheen and finesse of opera without its latter-day Puccinian vulgarities and without the pretensions of operatic ritual. It was genteel in expressive impact without being genteel in social conformity. And it moved people."- published: 12 May 2014

United States Representative and U.S. Senator from New York: Kenneth Keating Interview
United States Representative and U.S. Senator from New York: Kenneth Keating Interview
/ Kenneth Barnard Keating (May 18, 1900 -- May 5, 1975), was a United States Representative and a U.S. Senator from New York, and in later life, an appellate judge and a diplomat representing the United States as ambassador to India and later to Israel. He attended public school and was graduated from Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in 1915. He then attended the University of Rochester, which he was graduated from in 1919, while there he joined The Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and from Harvard Law School in 1923. He was admitted to the bar in 1923 and commenced practice in Rochester. During the First World War he served as a sergeant in the United States Army and during the Second World War served overseas and was promoted to brigadier general in 1948. On returning to the United States he resumed his law practice. Keating was elected to the House of Representatives as a Republican to the 80th, 81st, 82nd, 83rd, 84th and 85th United States Congresses, and served from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1959. In 1958 he defeated New York County District Attorney Frank Hogan for the U.S. Senate seat of the retiring Irving M. Ives, and served from January 3, 1959, to January 3, 1965. Before the Cuban Missile Crisis, Senator Keating accused the Soviets and Cuba of building IRBMs in Cuba, and urged President John F. Kennedy to take action. Keating was a moderate, like many prominent New York Republicans of his era. When he was running for re-election in 1964 Keating refused to endorse his party's Presidential nominee, the conservative Senator Barry Goldwater, who was highly unpopular in New York. Keating did run far ahead of Goldwater in New York, but was still defeated for re-election in 1964 by Democrat Robert F. Kennedy, after a campaign in which Keating labelled Kennedy, who had only spent part of his childhood in New York, as a "carpetbagger." Keating's campaign slogan was "Keep Keating." In 1965, Keating was elected to the New York Court of Appeals, but resigned in 1969 to become United States Ambassador to India where he stayed until 1972. Keating then served as Ambassador to Israel from August 1973 until his death in 1975.- published: 04 May 2014

Herbert H. Lehman Interview: Democratic Party Politician from New York
/ Herbert Henry Lehman (March 28, 1878 -- December 5, 1963) was a Democratic Party politician from New York. He was the 45th Governor of New York from 1933 to 1942, and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1950 to 1957. Lehman, born in New York City in 1878, was the son of German-Jewish immigrant Mayer Lehman, one of the three founders of the Lehman Brothers investment banking firm. Herbert Lehman attended what is now The Dwight School. A graduate of Williams College (Class of 1899), he became a partner of Lehman Brothers with his brother Arthur and cousin Philip in 1908. Lehman married Edith Louise Altschul in 1910. Herbert Lehman became a colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I. The couple had three children, Hilda, Peter, and John. All three served in the United States Military during World War II; Peter was killed while on active duty. According to a group history that was published April 6, 1944, the Governor's son was to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The medal was set to be awarded to Peter on his father's 70th birthday. Lehman became active in politics in 1920, and became Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Democratic Party in 1928, as a reward for being a strong supporter of Alfred E. Smith. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1928 and 1930, and resigned from Lehman Brothers upon taking office. He then served four terms as Governor of New York from 1933 and 1942, elected in 1932, 1934, 1936 and 1938. Unlike Smith, Lehman was a supporter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "New Deal" policies and implemented a program in the same spirit in New York. On December 3, 1942, he resigned the governorship less than a month before the end of his term to accept an appointment as Director of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation Operations for the United States Department of State. He served as Director-General of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration from 1943 to 1946. Herbert Lehman was the Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senator from New York in 1946 and also ran on the Liberal and American Labor tickets, but was defeated by the Republican candidate Irving Ives. In 1949, he ran again, this time in a special election to serve the remainder of Robert F. Wagner's term. Lehman defeated John Foster Dulles, who had been appointed to fill the vacancy temporarily after Wagner's resignation, and took his seat on January 3, 1950. In this campaign he ran on the Democratic and Liberal tickets, with the American Labor Party urging their members not to vote for any candidate. In 1950, he was re-elected to a full term running on the Democratic and Liberal lines and opposed by the American Labor Party. Lehman was one of two senators who were opposed to nominating Mississippi Senator James O. Eastland to be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. (The other was Wayne L. Morse of Oregon.) He was also an early and vocal opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.). Lehman was one of the most liberal Senators and not considered part of the Senate "club" of insiders. He retired from the Senate after his full term, and was not a candidate for renomination or reelection in 1956.- published: 04 May 2014
