Panag-Abuos Festival - Tan-Ok ni Ilocano: The Festival of Festivals 2013
(4th Place) "PANAG-ABUOS" is a word that describes how to gather ABUOS (Weaver Ants) and their eggs. The ABUOS thrive abundantly in fruit trees, forest trees and the like lays white and juicy egg a little bigger than grain rice. Nature's creativity is evident in the delicate interrelations among human beings and other creatures. The PANAG-ABUOS FESTIVAL is designated to focus the activity of the ABUOS and the ILOCANO PEOPLE especially the people of Banna, the proverbial ants of humanity, Industry, unity, toil, and perseverance define these people. After the harvest season, the older town folks give themselves a break from the hard life, engaging themselves leisurely in less fruitful and productive activities, while the younger ones enjoy the happy life outdoors after the rainy days. The Banna Zipline, the first in Ilocos Norte becomes a destination of choice of most tourists and locals. Meanwhile, the ABUOS (weaver ants) start coming out in groups to build their nests while others start to save food. They are champions of cooperation when it comes to building their nests and saving food for the rainy days. The PANAG-ABUOS (gathering buos eggs) entails a process that requires concerted efforts of family members centeredness and a professed love for the hilly town of Banna. Along the bountiful blessings, the people of Banna take time to ponder on the goodness of the Lord to inculcate in everyone's heart and mind the good traits of the Ilocano and the characteristics of the ABUOS. So it is that "Panag-Abuos Festival" is the main feature of every year's Town Fiesta Celebration. The Abuos eggs cooked in many different ways is a special food served while the "Bannatiran", and the "Banna A Kaimnasan", the native song and festival song of banna, respectively remain favorites during celebrations and festivities.- published: 10 Dec 2013

Empanada Festival- 2nd Runner-up Tan-Ok ni Ilocano: The Festival of Festivals 2013
The year before World War II was a heyday in the community. Peaceful and happy life prevailed. Like any other place in the country then, World War II brought hardships and turmoil to the community. People starved. People famished. Resilient as they are, the Batacqueños found ways to solve the problem of starvation. A family of good cooks started to make a delicacy which could be a complete meal, using what is readily available in the agricultural lands and their poultries. This family produced what we now know as the Batac Empanada. The people like it. And the preference of the Batacqueños for the Empanada continues to the present, and it is hoped to be passed on from generation to generation. The joy and fun in making and selling of empanada come with a happy hearts, smiling faces, as shown now in the Empanada Festival. #TanOk2013- published: 07 Dec 2013

The PANAG-ABUOS FESTIVAL is designed to focus the activity of the ABUOS and the ILOCANO PEOPLE especially the people of Banna, the proverbial ants of humanity. Meanwhile, the ABUOS (weaver ants) start coming out in groups to build their nests while others start to save food. They are champions of cooperation when it comes to building their nests and saving food for the rainy days. The PANAG-ABUOS (gathering abuos eggs) requires concerted efforts of family members, hence, instilling in them family centeredness and a professed love for the hilly town of Banna. The ABUOS eggs are gathered by hanging a net at the end of a pointed pole, pricking their nests, the leaves of which have turned brown manifesting that the eggs are ready to be gathered. Bado-Badoc Festival- Tan-Ok ni Ilocano: The Festival of Festivals 2013
During the Japanese colonization, an era of great savage and chaos, a group of Filipino priests tried to save the remaining valuables of the Catholic Church through a voyage in the seas... they had with them Filipino refugees from the wrath of colonization. However, in the pursuit of preserving the Church relics from the Japanese mistreat, they met destruction in the waters, a storm so strong to even turn the ship upside down has gotten in their way. The priests thought of saving the relics but they also cared about the lives of the Filipinos they saved from captivity abomination. They threw some of the heavy church relics in the ocean so as to ease the weight of the ship. But after that, nobody knew what happened to the ship, the priests and the Filipinos who boarded. No one has ever recorded the progress of the voyage. Days passed and the Filipino life under Japanese era continued. Two fishermen sailed across the ocean to fish, but instead of finding fish to eat, they found 2boxes. They brought the boxes along the shore of barrio Daldalaquiten in the town of Sinait which eventually led the people of the place and the neighboring town of Badoc to extreme curiosity. Just after the fishermen stepped out of their fishing boat, everyone gathered around all eager to find out what's inside the box. The people of Sinait grew in awe at what they saw. It is said that the people of Sinait wanted to get the box containing the Blesses Virgin Mother's image but when they bent down and took hold of it, they could not move or raise it from the ground. After several vain attempts, they gave up and surrendered it to the people of Badoc and let them try if they could. The Badoc people took hold of the box, and miraculously able to raise and carry it. So, the Sinait people took the box containing the Black Crucifix which they were able to raise and carry the Black Santo Cristo and the Virgen Milagrosa came to be in Sinait parish church and in the Badoc parish Church, respectively. La Virgen Milagrosa is believed to have a chosen Badoc as her residence she became not only the patroness of the town but the promise as well. During the stay of La Virgen Milagrosa, Badoc grew as progressive town producing world class tobaccos, garlic, onion and other crops. The town also flourished with its people who conquered the international scene such as the National Artist and world acclaimed painter Juan Luna, also the painter who placed in the map through his exceptional piece, the Spolarium. The miraculous story of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc makes a big portion of the greatness of Badoc and its rightful place in the historical books of Ilocos Norte. Indeed a humble town with a handful of greatness to be proud of.- published: 11 Dec 2013

KURARAPNIT FESTIVAL "A TRIBUTE TO MOTHER NATURE" From out of a cavern, a black cloud spins. A wraithlike inhabitant appears, and ready to infect the nearest human. Suddenly you realize that it is made up of thousands of Bats! These are only a few myths that people believe about bats as "Creatures of the Night." Yet, these remarkable animals are helpful to us! Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte is considered the ultimate nature tourism estate in northern Philippines. With wide stretch of fine white sand beaches, rock formations, pristine dive sites, virgin forest , exotic marine resources, unique wildlife, majestic waterfalls, fresh water from our river systems, vast hills, plains and mountains, hectares of farmlands and enchanting caves, are truly nature's best kept secrets. Our cave most notable of which is the NABCA, home of thousands of fruit bats located at Barangay Saguigui, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. Bats are flying mammals and feed on fruits and insects like the dreaded mosquito's carrying dengue and malaria. With them, the health of 21 thousand citizens of Pagudpud and tourists are safeguarded. They help in the pollination of useful plants and their droppings called "GUANO" are used as fertilizers. They have a highly sophisticated sense of hearing called Echolocation. These make bats a very unique creature that aid the natural phenomenon in the cycle of life's symbiotic relationship of plant and animal kingdom. With tourism as one of our major industries in this town, "Kurarapnit Festival" has become one of our major tourism products along cultural aspects. Environmentalist Leader, Mayor Marlon Ferdinand T. Sales believe that this wonderful creature may perhaps magnetize more tourists to come, offering them spelunking activity. He considers that giving life to movements or plight of this nocturnal superb creation of God, the "Kurarapnit" dance shall definitely leave a vivid mark on the eyes and minds of every appreciative nature lover that man, plants, animals and the environment must blend in perfect harmony completing the web of existence of life. The dance was conceptualized to create awareness in how to appreciate the vital role of bats, and to strengthen public awareness on how to preserve our caves as their habitats, In the past, mankind has recognized the importance and mistreatment of bats only when the bats have been destroyed nearly to the point of no return. This must change! To save bats from future human cruelty, ignorance and carelessness, we must inform and educate the public of the economic importance of bats. In other words bats need a press relation campaign to change the terrible image of bats. Knowing- fully that caves are natures, great wonder being formed thousands of years needing complete preservations as mandated under R.A 9072 (Cave Act Law). With the "Kurarapnit Dance", we hope to showcase how nature works with culture compliment and depict a unique dance and as a tourist attraction. A grand festival hat would accomplish much, but the true change will take place in the minds in hearts of the people. This can only be done through further education about bats and only when people accept bats as truly amazing, essential and inoffensive creatures. Surely, this "Kurarapnit Festival" shall be remembered, not only as o major Tourism Product of Pagudpud but as an effective and strategic execution of laws for the preservation of caves and to declare that Pagudpud has much potential ti nurture in the advancement of tourism industry.- published: 11 Dec 2013

Magdadaran Talip Festival- Tan-ok ni Ilocano: The Festival of Festivals 2013
CARASI an upland Municipality located in the easternmost part of Ilocos Norte bounded on the North by Vintar, East by Apayao, West by its mother town Piddig and South by Solsona. Travelers of old made them reach a dry stream and they call it Karkarsi (dry). But modern times have changed the name of the town from two native Ilocano words Karayo (Cara) ken kaasi (si) which typifies the people of Carasi (Loving and caring). Magdadaran-talip is an Isnag phrase which means "gathering for a dance". The Isnags of Carasi make it a point to celebrate every significant occasion by singing (dissodis), ritual dancing (talip and Taddo) - signifyng an expression of unity and collective feeling on every significant event or stage in their lives : birth of a first son, courtship and union of two families after a successful "umune" and as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest after " Magtugno/Panagnguman" or hunting " Manganup". Portraying the rich and satisfying yet challenging lives of the Isnags of Carasi, the dancers clad in their intricately woven "bassaw and Laddong" while men in their "abag" showcase the Carasi of old—unspoiled, innocent, uncomplicated by the modern technology. Dancers, songs and games that are played value the culture and tradition that is unique among Indigenous of the mountains. Significant parts of the dance show exploits of nature, dishonorable deeds and how Carasi suffered as the natural habitat is ravaged by not responsible small scale mining, "kaingin"(illegal cutting of trees) and the main problem forest fire because of tribe's negligence and "force majeure". One word that captures the heart of a traditional ISNAG-- ANITO(spirit protector). It came to articulate core beliefs and a way of life including simplicity, and resistance, a rejection of individualism, an organization with a human scale and even humility in dress or mannerisms. At the center of the celebration, is a motif representing the spirit protector (anito) in the form of the UGSA, a symbol of the heritage and values of the community. People like the Ugsa are kept protected from future generations, so that they may never forget their heritage, that no matter where they go—they know their back home. Dancers show that there is a cosmic connectedness which we all partake, ones with the forest, with the galaxies, with our rivers. The isnag cannot live in isolation from nature and from his fellow human beings. The great renewal for Love of Nature and its elements is a profound reflection of how the Carasinian's heart is described as one interconnected with others. The spirit community by helping one another in reforesting the denuded forests by the use of their "ulapi" to carry endemic plants, "aliwa" to clear the planting area and "gusi" to carry water for the community of the nature protectors, The performance ends where all elements are united and harmonized and the Isnags gather for a feast. Such celebration of sustained (all night) dancing by rhythmic stamping of the feet (Talip) with "ayub" in the hands bodies swaying with the beat of the "gansa" (gong) and "ludag". Other memnbers of the tribe resort to singing (dissodis) humming (unenas) and the elderly gives appreciation thru "ayaya" and "aro-oy" (applause). After such gathering, the community's souls are calmed, strengths and restored and peace reigns. Carasi, "ammandingan daya Isnag" a place of God's dear earth, right within our native mountains, where the environment is treated with kindred kindness.- published: 19 Dec 2013
