Complete Obama Climate Change Speech - Georgetown University - June 25, 2013
6/25/2013 - In an address at Georgetown University in Washington, President Obama laid out a sweeping new plan to address climate change. As expected, Obama said his plan seeks to cap the carbon emissions of power plants. Obama also said the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to Texas, would only be approved by the State Department if it aligned with the "nation's interest." That is if "this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution," Obama said. Now remember, the State Department already released a draft environmental assessment of the project that found the 1,700 mile pipeline will "not have a huge impact on climate." Monetary donations for fire victims are accepted by First Citizens Bank. Donations can also be made by calling (843) 546-8591 Also, such aid can be given to Sept 25 2013 Historic Front Street Fire helping agencies at www.salvationarmycarolinas.org/commands/georgetown or www.redcross.org Georgetown Wooden Boat Show and Bridge2Bridge Half Marthon will go on in wake of Front Street Fire, says Georgetown County Tourism Management Commission. Georgetown South Carolina suffered a fire this morning but will rebuild and plans for popular fall events are going forward. The City of Georgetown South Carolina suffered a fire that destroyed a portion of the Historic Harborwalk section of Front Street. While the loss of the businesses and homes is shocking and difficult, the town is already moving forward. The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show is one of the most popular events in the area and the show will go on. Susan Sanders, Director of the SC Maritime Museum shared "The Boat Show Committee has already agreed that the community needs the Boat Show more this year than ever, and we plan to make it the biggest and best." The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show will be held on October 19th from 11- 6 Georgetown Waterfront. More information can be found at www.woodenboatshow.com Organizers of the Third Annual Georgetown Bridge2Bridge Half Marathon, 12K and 5K Run have also announced that their event will continue as planned. The event, in which runners wind through historic Georgetown will be held as planned on October 12. For more information on the race see www.bridge2bridgerun.com. Source: Lauren Cobb ~ Tourism Marketing Director ~ Georgetown County Tourism Management Commission llcobb@hammockcoastsc.com 843-546-8436 Jackie Broach, Georgetown County Information Officer, says a fire that ravaged part of Front Street in the City of Georgetown's Historic District this morning is under control and preparations are being made to begin cleaning out debris from the businesses that were destroyed. The fire, which was reported at 5:23 a.m., caused severe damage to seven buildings on the 700 block of Front Street. An eighth building, the S.C. Maritime Museum, received smoke and water damage. It is reported that building had a sprinkler system, which worked correctly. No major injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The origin and cause of the fire have not been determined. The county is receiving reports of discolored water in the Georgetown area, likely as a result of firefighting activities. Residents can be assured this is not a water quality issue. The water is safe to drink, but officials say washing clothes with the discolored water is not advisable. The discoloration should end this afternoon when firefighting activities on Front Street are through. Maryville residents were warned earlier in the day about impacts to their water service as a result of firefighting efforts, but they should be experiencing normal service now. The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are on scene and will offer assistance to victims of the fire. Manager Sam Hodge of Georgetown County Emergency Management was on hand to provide leadership and assistance. The Bridge 2 Bridge Run and the Wooden Boat Show, both scheduled for next month in Georgetown, will go ahead as planned. More than 100 emergency responders remain on the scene. In addition to Georgetown City Fire and Police departments, the following departments provided aid today: Georgetown County Fire/EMS, Midway Fire Rescue, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Andrews Fire Department, Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire and Rescue, the Coast Guard, Horry County Fire Rescue, the City of Conway Fire Department, Johnsonville Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, Williamsburg County Fire Department, South Lynches Fire Department of Florence County, Myrtle Beach Fire Department and North Myrtle Beach Fire Department.- published: 26 Sep 2013
