The Debate - Lawless Libya
The Debate - Lawless Libya
Violence is taking over parts of Libya, as various militia groups continue to operate in the country with immunity and without any government control. In the latest spree of violence, over 40 people were killed when militia men opened fire on protesters who were demanding that all armed groups be disarmed and leave Tripoli, the capital and the largest city in Libya. Apart from violence, in the country's oil-rich east, some militias are pushing for independence while a number of others are seeking a federal system. In the country's west, the situation is no better as tensions are running high between rival ethnic groups. Can the government in Tripoli be the glue to keep the country together or not and who benefits from chaos taking over Libya?- published: 17 Nov 2013

Inside Story - Is Libya on the brink of a new civil war?
Two years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, we ask why the government struggles to rein in the country's militias. Inside Story, with presenter Jane Dutton, is joined by guests: Larry Korb, a senior fellow at the Centre for American Progress and a former assistant US secretary of defence; Anas el-Gomati, the director of the Sadeq Institute, a non-governmental think tank; and Abdul Monem al-Yasser, Libya's chairman of national security.- published: 21 Oct 2013

A Yank in Libya
A Yank in Libya
A Yank in Libya American correspondent Mike Malone uncovers a Nazi plot for an uprising of the Arab tribes in Lybia. Pursued by Sheik David and his men, Mike takes refuge in the suite of Nancy Brooks, who is in the British Intelligence. He asks her to hide a gun and escapes through a window. Reporting the affair to British Consul Herbert Forbes, the latter tries to discourage him from further investigation, as the British are aware of the plot and are planning on staging a coup. He goes with Mike to Nancy's apartment, and she denies having ever seen him before. Sheik Ibrahim, next in command of the Arab tribe to Sheik David, is plotting with Nazi agent Yussof Streyer to kill David who is friendly with the British. Mike and Nancy have gone to David's camp, escape from Ibrahim's henchmen, and get back to El Moktar before the Arabs attack the garrison. The above film is public domain. Lion of the Desert
This movie tells the story of Omar Mukhtar, a Libyan tribal leader fighting the Italian army in the years leading up to World War II. It was directed by Moustapha Akkad, starring Anthony Quinn. It gives western viewers a glimpse into this little-known region and chapter of history, and exposes the savage means by which the conquering army attempted to subdue the natives. A very touching story indeed!

Photographer John Moore on 'Epic' Libya Battles, Arab World Revolutions
Read the profile: http://to.pbs.org/fudCZe
Photographer John Moore is no stranger to combat. As a member of an Associated Press team in 2005, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and he's done extended stints in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Africa, Mexico and Nicaragua and elsewhere in the last 20 years.
Yet despite his relative comfort with being on the frontlines, Moore told the NewsHour from his hotel room in Cairo that his latest assignment -a six-week trip that took him to the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya - might have been his most dangerous. Moore recorded the interview for us after sneaking out of Benghazi, Libya en route back to his home in Denver.

Safe Libya is a non profit organisation with the aim of helping Libya with the mass amount of arms still under the control of splinter groups, gangs and civilian people. Eight Eight was commissioned to create a campaign that would engage the public and speak out to those Libyan people who do have weapons in their possession. From something so tiny, a chain reaction can be caused that creates mass chaos, but when the people decide they have had enough, and have decided that this should stop, all arms will be collected, and this will then create a Safer Libya, without guns.

The Libyan desert near Ras Lanouf
March, 2011
Demonstrations have given way to bloody conflict. Battle lines sway back and forth as the Benghazi-centered ragtag rebels combat Tripoli's mercenaries and loyalists. Pro-Gaddafi forces mount their first coordinated offensive, exposing the rebels as woefully untrained and unorganized. Defiance turns to anguish when casualties mount. Slivers of hope rest on defecting army generals and foreign intervention.
Photojournalist Patrick Chauvel brings us this immersive video from the rebels' front lines. "It's a very sad story," he says. "These guys are students, they're hairdressers, they're bakers, bankers, philosophers, teachers. They are no military."
Chauvel is concerned for his safety. Gaddafi loyalists target the media and could cut off any escape. Four New York Times journalists are missing at the time and an Al Jazeera cameraman dies in the days that follow. Patrick says fighting in the flat, open desert divides the rebels into two camps: lucky and unlucky. Shelling hits at random, missing by hundreds of meters one moment and striking a direct hit the next. Chauvel fears the misses are the warning shots. He plans to escape before the battle becomes a massacre.

Gaddafi Interview - Libya 2010
For more info and downloads visit http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65621&bid;=10 In this rare interview shot in February 2010 - less than two years before he was killed while hiding in a culvert - Muammar Gaddafi tells presenter George Negus he's always merely represented the will of the people. "For 40 years I have not been the ruler, the authority has been with the people," says Gaddafi calmly. Surrounded by security guards and local TV crews in a library of his military compound, which was bombed by the Americans back in 1986, Gaddafi gives an air of quiet confidence. He continues to deny responsibility in the Lockerbie bombing and advocates a one-state solution to the Israel and Palestine conflict. He also comments on Libya's nuclear programme, and shares his opinions on terrorism and democracy. Quizzed by Negus about his softened image, Gaddafi responds that "It is the world that has changed."- published: 22 Aug 2013
