Silent Roar: Searching for the Snow Leopard (Nature Documentary)
Silent Roar: Searching for the Snow Leopard (Nature Documentary)
Silent Roar: Searching for the Snow Leopard (Nature Documentary) Acclaimed wildlife filmmakers capture the first intimate portrait of the world's most elusive cat. Most big cats do their best to remain hidden from human eyes, but none are quite as adept at this as the snow leopard. These cats lead largely solitary lives, populating the Himalayas at altitudes that offer only about half the oxygen to which humans are accustomed. So when wildlife filmmakers Hugh Miles and Mitchell Kelly set out to film this animal they knew they were in for a challenge. The filmmakers chose Hemis National Park in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir as their base camp. There they selected a team of native mountaineers and trackers to accompany them into the Himalayas. The team climbed as high as 15,000 feet, tracking the cats via paw prints in the snow and the scented urine that snow leopards use to mark their territory. The group also concealed remote, sensor-activated cameras equipped with infrared light to allow for stealth, night observation of the cats. After five weeks without a single sighting, the team finally spotted one of the rare cats on a mountain ledge. After several months, the filmmakers had doggedly compiled a growing body of work. The crew filmed close-ups of several cats and identified individuals. To further improve their understanding of the snow leopards' complex behavior, the filmmakers turned to Rodney Jackson, director of the Snow Leopard Conservancy. Jackson's insights helped them achieve greater success in filming snow leopards hunting, courting, and even mating -- none of which had previously been captured on film. In the end, Miles and Kelly accomplished most of their goals, with only one disappointment: they did not find a litter of cubs. At one point, they did spot a female followed by a little youngster. But mother and cub quickly vanished into the snowy realm in which the elusive snow leopard reigns.- published: 22 Nov 2013

Wild Snow Leopard Of Afghanistan(full documentary)
July 18, 2012—In spring, 2012 conservationists fitted snow leopards with satellite collars in Afghanistan for the first time. Since then, one of the big cats has already roamed more than a hundred miles (160 kilometers). The team hopes its tracking data can spur protection of the leopards' Afghan habitat—and help ensure a rosier future for the rare cats.- published: 19 Sep 2013

Snow Leopard Cub Makes Public Debut at Brookfield Zoo
A snow leopard cub born at Brookfield Zoo on June 13 made his public debut for zoo guests today. The cub, who now weighs nearly 15 pounds, can be seen on exhibit with his 3-year-old mom, Sarani. Sarani and her mate, Sabu, 3, arrived at Brookfield Zoo in October 2011 from Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Cape May County Park Zoo in New Jersey, respectively. Their pairing was based on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP). An SSP is a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in AZA zoos and aquariums. Each SSP manages the breeding of a species to maintain a healthy and self-sustaining population that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable. Including the new cub, 140 snow leopards currently live in 60 institutions in North America. The last time there was the pitter-patter of little snow leopard paws at Brookfield Zoo was in 1992. The zoo has exhibited snow leopards since 1936. Snow leopards are solitary animals, except for mating and when females are raising cubs. Cubs remain with their mother until they are independent around 18 to 22 months. They reach sexual maturity between 2 to 3 years of age. The snow leopards' smoky white-grey-yellowish coats, patterned with dark rosettes and spots, provide excellent camouflage in rocky, snowy habitat. Snow leopards have many adaptations which allow them to live in high mountainous terrain, including their very thick and long fur and their large, well furred paws, which act as snowshoes. Although they do not roar, they do moan, growl, mew and hiss, and to their cubs and mates, they make a reassuring puffing sound through their nostrils, which is called "prusten" or "chuffing." Snow leopards are listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world's oldest and largest global environmental organization. A leading snow leopard conservation organization, The Snow Leopard Trust, estimates population numbers of this elusive cat to be between 3,500 and 7,000 remaining in the wild. They inhabit high, rugged mountainous regions of central Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, China, Mongolia, and Russia. Their numbers are declining due to human influence, such as poaching for medicinal markets and hides, depletion of their prey base, retribution killing following livestock losses, residential and commercial development, and civil unrest. The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, inspires conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature. The Chicago Zoological Society is a private nonprofit organization that operates Brookfield Zoo on land owned by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Open every day of the year, the zoo is located off First Avenue between the Stevenson (I-55) and Eisenhower (I-290) expressways and is also accessible via the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), Metra commuter line, CTA, and PACE bus service.
