James "Jimmy" Dorsey (February 29, 1904 – June 12, 1957) was a prominent American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter, composer, and big band leader. He was known as "JD". He composed the jazz and pop standards "I'm Glad There Is You (In This World of Ordinary People)" and "It's The Dreamer In Me".
Jimmy Dorsey was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, the son of a music teacher and older brother of Tommy Dorsey who also became a prominent musician. He played trumpet in his youth, appearing on stage with J. Carson McGee's King Trumpeters in 1913. He switched to alto saxophone in 1915, and then learned to double on clarinet. Jimmy Dorsey played on a clarinet outfitted with the Albert system of fingering, as opposed to the more common Boehm system used by most of his contemporaries including Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw.
With his brother Tommy playing trombone, he formed Dorsey’s Novelty Six, one of the first jazz bands to broadcast. In 1924 he joined the California Ramblers (who were based in New York City). He did much free lance radio and recording work throughout the 1920s. The brothers also appeared as session musicians on many jazz recordings. He joined Ted Lewis's band in 1930, with whom he toured Europe.
Helen O'Connell (May 23, 1920 – September 9, 1993) was an American singer, actress, and dancer.
Born in Lima, Ohio, O'Connell joined the Jimmy Dorsey band in 1939 and achieved her best selling records in the early 1940s with "Green Eyes", "Amapola," "Tangerine" and "Yours". In each of these Latin-influenced numbers, Bob Eberly crooned the song which Helen then reprised in an up-tempo arrangement. O'Connell was selected by Down Beat readers as best female singer in 1940 and 1941 and won the 1940 Metronome magazine poll for best female vocalist.
O'Connell retired from show business upon her first marriage in 1943. When her marriage ended in 1951, she resumed her career, achieving some chart success and making regular appearances on television. She was one of the first "girls" on NBC's The Today Show, and at one point had her own NBC program, Here's Hollywood, conducting interviews with celebrities, often in their own homes. O'Connell co-hosted the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants with Bob Barker from 1972 to 1980 and was nominated for an Emmy award in 1976 for her coverage of the Miss Universe pageant. O'Connell sang duets with Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, and Dean Martin. O'Connell's 1942 recording of Brazil with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra was a 2009 addition to the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) was an American singer, actress, civil rights activist and dancer.
Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of sixteen and became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood, where she had small parts in numerous movies, and more substantial parts in the films Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. Due to the Red Scare and her left-leaning political views, Horne found herself blacklisted and unable to get work in Hollywood.
Returning to her roots as a nightclub performer, Horne took part in the March on Washington in August 1963, and continued to work as a performer, both in nightclubs and on television, while releasing well-received record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but the next year starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway and earned her numerous awards and accolades. She continued recording and performing sporadically into the 1990s, disappearing from the public eye in 2000.
Hazel Dorothy Scott (June 11, 1920 – October 2, 1981) was an internationally known, American jazz and classical pianist and singer; she also performed as herself in several films. She was prominent as a jazz singer throughout the 1930s and 1940s. In 1950, she became the first woman of color to have her own TV show, The Hazel Scott Show, featuring a variety of entertainment. To evade the political persecution of artists in the McCarthy era, Scott moved to Paris in the late 1950s and performed in France, not returning to the United States until 1967.
Born in Port of Spain, Hazel was taken at the age of four by her mother to New York. Recognized early as a musical prodigy, Scott was given scholarships from the age of eight to study at the Juilliard School. She began performing in a jazz band in her teens and was performing on radio at age 16.
Hazel Scott was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago to Alma Long Scott, a musician. They moved to New York City when Hazel was four. Recognized as a child musical prodigy, the young Scott was awarded scholarships to study classical piano at the Juilliard School from the age of eight. As a teenager, she performed piano and trumpet with her mother’s "Alma Long Scott" all-girl jazz band, which sometimes featured Lil Hardin-Armstrong.
Charles James Shavers (August 3, 1920 – July 8, 1971), known as Charlie Shavers, was an American swing era jazz trumpet player who played at one time or another with Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, Sidney Bechet, Midge Williams and Billie Holiday. He was also an arranger and composer, and one of his compositions, "Undecided", is a jazz standard.
Charlie Shavers' father (a distant relative of Fats Navarro) was from the prominent Shavers family of Key West, Florida, and Charlie was a cousin of heavyweight boxer Earnie Shavers. Born in New York City, he originally took up the piano and banjo before switching to trumpet. In the mid-thirties, he performed with Tiny Bradshaw and Lucky Millinder. In 1936 he joined John Kirby's Sextet as trumpet soloist and arranger (he was only 16 but gave his birthdate as 1917 in order to avoid child labor laws - many biographies still list this date). His arrangements and solos with this band contributed greatly towards making it one of the most commercially successful and widely imitated bands of its day. In 1937 he was performing with Midge Williams and her Jazz Jesters. In 1944 he began playing sessions in Raymond Scott's CBS staff orchestra. In 1945 he left John Kirby's band to join Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra, with whom he toured and recorded, off and on, until 1953. During this time he continued to play sessions at CBS, played with the Metronome All-Stars, and made a number of recordings as trumpet soloist with Billie Holiday. From 1953 to 1954 he worked with Benny Goodman, and toured Europe with Norman Granz's popular Jazz at the Philharmonic series, where he was always a crowd favorite. He went on to form his own band with Terry Gibbs and Louie Bellson.
Amapola
My pretty little poppy
You're like that lovely flower, so sweet and heavenly
Since I found you
My heart is wrapped around you
And loving you it seems to beat a rhapsody
Amapola
The pretty little poppy
Must copy its endearing charm from you
Amapola, Amapola
Blue Champagne - purple shadows and Blue Champagne,
With the echoes that still remain I keep a blue
rendezvous.
Bubbles rise like a fountain before my eyes
And they suddenly crystallize to form a vision of you.
All the plans we started, all the songs we sang
Each little dream we knew seem to overtake me like a
boomerang.
Blue is the sparkle, gone is the tang;
Each old refrain keeps returning as I remain
With my memories and Blue Champagne
(Male singer)
Tangerine,
She is all they claim
With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame
Tangerine,
When she dances by
Señoritas stare and caballeros sigh
And I've seen
Toasts to Tangerine
Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Yes, she has them all on the run
But her heart belongs to just one
Her heart belongs to Tangerine
(Female singer)
Tangerine,
She is all they say
With mascara'd eye and chapeaux by Daché.
Tangerine,
With her lips of flame
If the color keeps, Louis Philippe's to blame.
And I've seen
Clothes on Tangerine
Where the label says "From Macy's Mezzanine".
Yes, she's got the guys in a whirl
But she's only fooling one girl
Besame, besame mucho
Each time I cling to your kiss, I hear music divine
Besame mucho
Hold me my darling and say that you'll always be mine
This joy is something new
My arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before
Whoever thought I'd be
Holding you close to me
Whispering "It's you I adore"
Dearest one
If you should leave me
Each little dream would take wing, and my life would be
through
Bsame mucho
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true
Besame, besame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche la ltima vez
Bsame mucho
Que tengo miedo perderte, perderte otra vez
Quiero tenerte muy
Cerca, mirarme en tus
Ojos, verte junto a m
Piensa que tal vez
Maana yo ya estar
Lejos, muy lejos de ti
Besame, bsame mucho
Como si fuera esta noche la ltima vez
Besame mucho
(So rare, so rare)
(So rare, so rare)
So rare, you're like the fragrance of blossoms fair
Sweet as a breath of air fresh with the morning dew
So rare, you're like the sparkle of old champagne
Orchids in cellophane couldn't compare to you
You are perfection, you're my idea
Of angels singin' the "Ave Maria"
Or you're an angel, I'd breathe and live you
With every beat of the heart that I give you
So rare, this is a heaven on earth we share
Caring the way we care, ours is a love so rare

You're the answer to a prayer
Maria Elena
Can't you see how much I care?
To me your voice is like the echo of a sigh
And when you're near my heart can't speak above a sigh
Maria Elena
Say that we will never part
Maria Elena
Take me to your heart
A love like mine is great enough for two
To share this love is really all I ask of you
Well, Green Eyes with their soft lights,
Your eyes that promise sweet nights,
Bring to my soul a longing, a thirst for love divine.
In dreams I seem to hold you, to find you and enfold you,
Our lips meet and our hearts, too, with a thrill so
sublime.
Those cool and limpid Green Eyes -
A pool wherein my love lies.
So deep that in my searching for happiness
I fear that they will ever haunt me,
All through my life they'll taunt me.
But will they ever want me?
Green Eyes, make my dreams come true.

I'll be down to get you in a taxi, honey
Better be ready about half past eight
Ooh, honey, don't be late
I'll be there when the band starts swingin'
Remember when we get there, honey
Two steps, we're gonna have a ball
Kick off both of our shoes
When they play the 'Jelly Roll Blues'
Quiet, tomorrow night at the darktown strutter's ball
Re-re-re-ready
(We're gonna come and get ya)
Let it ru-ru-rule, honey
(We've really gotta have it)
De-de-du-de-da-dy
(Whatchu gonna do now?)
Re-re-ru-ru-re-dra-dra
(Got 'em all right)
Re-re-de-di-di
(Tight, tight, tight)
Re-de-di-di-de-di-di
(Woo, talk tonight)
Re-di-de-di-di-di-de-di-de-di
Dom-dom-do-dom-da-da-da-di
Tomorrow night, at the strut-strut-strutter's ball
Darktown's heaven, tambourine
Everybody's shoutin' in a minor key
Sunday gonna meet, 'course, that ain't long
Makin' preparations for the strutter's ball
I'll be down to get you in a taxi, honey
Gotta be ready about half past eight
Ooh, honey, don't be late
Be there when the bands are swingin'
Remember when we get there, honey
Two steps, we're gonna have 'em all
Take off both of our shoes

Quiet, tomorrow night
Yup, tomorrow night
Yours till the stars have no glory
Yours till the birds fail to sing
Yours to the end of life's story,
This pledge to you, dear, I bring.
Yours in the gray of December
Here or on far distant shores!
I've never loved anyone the way I love you
6 lessons from Madame La Zonga
You'll do the rhumba and the new La Conga
Six lessons in Madame's cabana
And you'll develop your hip and your knee;
And say, by the way, if you're short it's okay,

The Breeze And I
The Breeze and I
- words by Al Stillman, music by Ernesto Lecuona
- music written in 1929 as a piano piece called "Andaluza", part of
the Andalucia Suite by the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona
- words added later by Al Stillman
The breeze and I are saying with a sigh
That you no longer care
The breeze and I are whispering goodbye
To dreams we used to share
Ours was a love song that seemed constant as the moon
Ending in a strange, mournful tune
And all about me, they know you have departed without me
And we wonder why, the breeze and I
Time was when we had fun
On the school yard swings
When we exchanged graduation rings
One lovely yesterday.
Time was when we wrote
Love letters in the sand
Or lingered over our "coffee and";
Dreaming the time away.
Picnics and hay rides and mid-winter
Sleigh rides and never apart.
Hikes in the country and
There's more than one tree
On which I've a place in your heart,
Darling, every tomorrow will be complete
If all our moments are half as sweet
