Paralysed by unrest and deeply divided, Ukraine is yet again at a crossroads. Stumbling from revolution to revolution, the country\'s leaders always portray the choice as one between an authoritarian past and a democratic future. But does it have to be so black, white and orange? Can Ukraine reconcile its identity with its interests or will it plunge into bitter turmoil? Oksana is joined by Ukrainian MP and activist Andriy Shevchenko to analyse these issues.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Joyous, singing South Africans gathered in the rain Tuesday to honor Nelson Mandela at a massive memorial service that is expected to draw some 100 heads of state and other luminaries, united in tribute to a global symbol of reconciliation.
Crowds converged on FNB Stadium in Soweto, the Johannesburg township that was a stronghold of support for the anti-apartheid struggle that Mandela embodied as a prisoner of white rule for 27 years and then during a peril-fraught transition to the all-race elections that made him president.

However, steady rain kept many people away. Shortly before the start of the ceremony, there were some 20,000 people in the 95,000-capacity stadium. Other area stadiums equipped with giant video screens for anticipated overflow crowds were largely empty.

Myanmar (Burma) Action: Free Aung San Suu Kyi and All Political Prisoners Now!

This year\'s Get on the Bus once again will feature an action in support of the Burmese people and their struggle for democracy, justice, and respect for human rights. The military rulers of Myanmar (Burma) have jailed thousands of people in their continuing efforts to crush all dissenting views. Amnesty International estimates that 2,100 political prisoners currently are being held by the military government. Most prominent of those detained is Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been the beacon of hope and change for nearly two decades in Myanmar, the Southeast Asian nation formerly known as Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi co-founded the National League for Democracy (NLD), a pro-democracy political party that sought to counter the military junta that had reigned over Myanmar since 1962. In 1990, the NLD won almost 80 percent of the parliamentary seats in a general election. Surprised at the landslide victory, the military junta refused to transfer power to Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD, and jailed scores of political activists.

For 14 of the past 20 years, Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced \

Seven juveniles jailed over the protest last month in Alexandria have also been released, on three months\' probation.

French troops arrived to a hero\'s welcome in the Central African Republic, as France announced that 1,600 soldiers will be deployed to keep the peace alongside the African Union forces. But the cheers mask the fear of a nation on the brink.

Religious violence continues to claim lives. The Red Cross announced that at least 400 bodies have been collected in the capital Bangui since Thursday.

French President François Hollande, working under a UN-backed mission to stem the tide of religious violence, called into question the interim president\'s role.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH →→→ http://youtu.be/xrMJ0QSfugo OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrMJ0QSfugo JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Joyous, singing South Africans gathered in the rain Tuesday to honor Nelson Mandela at a massive memorial service that is expected to draw some 100 heads of state and other luminaries, united in tribute to a global symbol of reconciliation. "I would not have the life I have today if it was not for him," said Matlhogonolo Mothoagae, a postgraduate marketing student who arrived hours before the stadium gates opened. "He was jailed so we could have our freedom." Rohan Laird, the 54-year-old CEO of a health insurance company, said he grew up during white rule in a "privileged position" as a white South African and that Mandela helped whites work through a burden of guilt. "His reconciliation allowed whites to be released themselves," Lair said. "I honestly don't think the world will see another leader like Nelson Mandela." Workers were still welding at a VIP area as the first spectators arrived amid an enormous logistical challenge of organizing the memorial for Mandela, who died Dec. 5 in his Johannesburg home at the age of 95. U.S. President Barack Obama landed in South Africa early Tuesday. Besides Obama, eulogies were to be delivered by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao and Cuban President Raul Castro. Other speakers include the presidents of Brazil, Namibia and India, as well as tributes from Mandela's grandchildren. South African President Jacob Zuma was to give the keynote address. Mandela's widow, Graca Machel, was at the stadium. So were actress Charlize Theron and singer Bono. Tuesday was the 20th anniversary of the day when Mandela and South Africa's last apartheid-era president, F.W. de Klerk, received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to bring peace to their country. Mandela said in his acceptance speech at the time: "We live with the hope that as she battles to remake herself, South Africa will be like a microcosm of the new world that is striving to be born." The sounds of horns and cheering filled the stadium ahead of the ceremony, due to start at 11 a.m. (0900 GMT, 4 a.m. EST). Rain sent those who arrived early into the stadium's covered upper deck, and many of the lower seats were empty. People blew on vuvuzelas, the plastic horn that was widely used during the World Cup soccer tournament in 2010, and sang songs from the era of the anti-apartheid struggle decades ago. "It is a moment of sadness celebrated by song and dance, which is what we South Africans do," said Xolisa Madywabe, CEO of a South African investment firm. The 95,000-capacity soccer venue was also the spot where Mandela made his last public appearance at the closing ceremony of the World Cup. After the memorial, his body will lie in state for three days at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, once the seat of white power, before burial Sunday in his rural childhood village of Qunu in Eastern Cape Province. Police promised tight security, locking down roads kilometers (miles) around the stadium. However, the first crowds entered the stadium without being searched. John Allen, a 48-year-old pastor from the U.S. state of Arkansas, said he once met Mandela at a shopping center in South Africa with his sons. "He joked with my youngest and asked if he had voted for Bill Clinton," Allen said. "He just zeroed in on my 8-year-old for the three to five minutes we talked."

Myanmar (Burma) Action: Free Aung San Suu Kyi and All Political Prisoners Now! This year's Get on the Bus once again will feature an action in support of the Burmese people and their struggle for democracy, justice, and respect for human rights. For 14 of the past 20 years, Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced "Awng Sahn Soo Chee") has endured time in jail, unofficial detention, house arrest and restrictions on her movement. She continues to be held under house arrest in Yangon. Amnesty International seeks the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all prisoners of conscience in Myanmar. Suthep Thaugsuban, the anti-government protest leader, said that was not good enough and continued to lead a march to Yingluck's offices at Government House. Thaugsuban wants to set up a "people's council" of so-called good people to replace the government, Yingluck said that would be unconstitutional and undemocratic. Protesters don't just want Yingluck to go, they want to wipe out the influence of her brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who continues to pull the strings of government from outside the country. Thaksin fled Thailand in 2008 to avoid a corruption conviction but has remained closely involved with his sister's government. But the cheers mask the fear of a nation on the brink. Religious violence continues to claim lives. The Red Cross announced that at least 400 bodies have been collected in the capital Bangui since Thursday. French President François Hollande, working under a UN-backed mission to stem the tide of religious violence, called into question the interim president's role. "We must disarm the armed groups, restore stability, and at the appropriate time, enable the country to hold free and fair elections," said Hollande, addressing the Africa-France summit in Paris. The country has been plunged into violence since the president was ousted in March by the Muslim Seleka rebel group. Fearing for their lives, 10 percent of the population have fled their homes often taking refuge in churches. At the Catholic Mission in Bangui, Father Evitas, Don Bosco spoke of the rising humanitarian crisis. "(It) causes a sanitary problem, as we do not have the infrastructure for this. We have a problem with toilets - we don't have any. Then there's the health problem, we don't have any medicine." India has emerged as a major gainer at the WTO Ministerial Meet at Bali as members accepted its demand on food security that will protect India and other developing countries from penalties for breaching the domestic subsidy cap of 10% of value of production. In return, India has agreed to a new agreement on trade facilitation that will ease controls at ports and airports and may provide a boost of up to 1 trillion dollars to the global economy.

VICE NEWS exclusive footage and interviews with British nationals fighting with al Qaeda in Syria. Yesterday, MI5 Director-General Andrew Parker announced that hundreds of British Muslims have travelled to Syria to take part in "terrorist tourism". Today, we present exclusive video footage and interviews with British nationals fighting with al Qaeda in Syria. In the film, two young men with British accents echo the sentiments expressed by Lee Rigby's killer Michael Adebolajo and declare jihad against the UK and United States. "I say to the United States that your time will come," says one of the men, who gives his age as 26, "and we will bleed you to death and, Inshallah, shall raise a flag in the White House." The second jihadist calls on the British public to rise up against the government: "Like the guy in Woolwich, he explained that David Cameron would never walk on the street, and he'll never get shot in the face, whereas you guys who are soldiers, or just normal folk, will take the blame for the crimes that are committed worldwide, by Britain itself, so we have to fight." The film also shines a light on the communication difficulties that arise when radicalised extremists from Britain, France, Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo and Turkey, among other countries, get together to fight on the front line.
