MAKE presents: The LED
Take a tour through the world of the light-emitting diode. Learn - who invented it, how to use it, and how to make your own.
Collin Cunningham: People are fascinated by light. I mean just glancing over at a display of flashing lights can grab my attention. Do you ever remember sitting around a campfire? Staring at the flames and just being totally transfixed, almost like if you're watching TV. It's comforting, and it can even by hypnotic. Recently, technology has made creating light a whole lot easier to do. For that, we have this little guy to thank. The light emitting diode, or LED for short.
LEDs have a lot of different uses, from a simple power on indicator to traffic signals. LEDs use about ten percent of the energy of a traditional light bulb, and they can last about thirty times longer. That makes them a pretty big hit with businesses looking to do large scale visual communication.
The first person to ever report the effects of a light emitting diode was researching another form of communication. In 1907, a man by the name of H. J. Round was researching radio waves for Marconi Labs. He was using a device called a cats whisker detector, which no, does not contain any cats or part of cats. Round was searching for a sweet spot on a crystal silicon carbide when he noticed something odd. Part of the crystal started to glow, it lit up a pale yellow, and that was an LED.
H. J. Round's crystal experiment was so cool and simple that I had to try it myself. So I got a piece of silicon carbide, then I hooked that up to the positive lead on my power supply. That's an alligator clip. I hooked a little sewing needle to the ground on my power supply. Then I began to search for light emitting zones.
I built my own sort of cats whisker detector in order to keep the needle in place on a particularly bright spot I found. Now I can sit back and enjoy the warm glow of a homemade LED anytime I choose, even though it's pretty dim, but it's still cool.
As far as we know, Round's research into light emitting crystals ended here, which is a shame because he was definitely on to something. But of course that's not the end of the story. Fifteen years later, in imperial Russia, a scientist and inventor named Oleg Vladmirovich Losev noticed that certain diodes in radios started to glow a bit when in use. Losev conducted a lot of heavy research and published his findings in several languages. But, sadly, they seem to have gone unnoticed. It wasn't until 1962, that a visible light emitting diode was made practical by Nick Holonyak working at General Electric. He's widely known as the father of the LED.
The technology that Holonyak brought to the public is remarkably similar to our crystal experiment. A thin metal wire connects one side of the circuit to a small piece of semi-conductive material on the other side. The LED's two leads are cut to different lengths to show you how it should be connected. The longer is called the anode, and that connects to positive. The shorter is the cathode, and that goes to negative. To power an LED, you can just use a simple coin cell. This is a CR2032. And just make sure the longer lead is on the positive side, which is wider and smoother, and negative is on the other. If you plan to use a battery, let's say a nine volt, you'll also need a resistor to limit the current so we don't burn out the LED. Connect negative to the cathode, the shorter lead, and we'll put a 470 ohm resistor between the positive battery and the anode. For more useful info, check out the LED Center, and there's a lot of great history at the LED Museum. For all types of project ideas, info, and inspiration head over to Makezine.com.

Gedda Headz - Spaced Out
One day, I was on set for a corporate shoot, in the east mountains of France. I was busy as a runner can be, carrying heavy equipment, wires, spotlights, all sorts of things, when I got a phonecall. The number was hidden, and a stranger spoke to me with what I thought to be an Indian accent. Danish. He was Danish. I found a mail later this day, from this guy, asking me to come up with my own concept and shoot a music video for him. As most of those random proposals turn out to be dead-ends, I was a bit skeptical at first. But mails followed, and we talked about concepts, team, shooting, and other practicalities. Then I went to the Berlin Film Festival, where I met Keidrych. He sat down in front of me, and ask me: "Do you have a project ? Is there a budget ?". We started talking about it. Weeks later, we were flying to Hong Kong to make this happen. Hong Kong because it's futuristic and intense, like an Asian Neverland. The track has a little Asian feeling to me, the techno beat mixed with the 8-bit-style synthesizers.
Followed a month of preparation, careful plannings, a few arguings, meetings, location scouting, a tad of random castings drunk at 5am in the clubbing street. A week of intense sweating, shouting and shooting. Another month of post-production, grading, etc. And finally, here it is.
I have many thanks to make. First, to Ulrik, for offering me this great project, and for trusting me. Then, to Keidrych, for our teamwork and our passionate discussions about life, Boards of Canada, Thai food and music videos. To Sophia, for her strength and kindness. To Purcy, for sticking to the plan. To Sam, for putting together the best riders of Hong Kong. To Miggy, for making the costumes real, and Irving, who did just the same with the set. To Connie, for her communicative joy. To Yindy, for her "Don't go in that street ! The triads will ransom and kidnap us !" To the whole camera and lighting crew, who made us never worry about anything technical. It just worked. To Anna, Eric and the Free-D Workshop team for having done great VFX in no time. To Christophe and Alexandra, from Tempesta Production, Etienne and Charles, from Digimage, for their generosity. To Tommy, for his amazing photography ( check his http://www.flickr.com/tgkw ), his sense of the decisive moment, and his vibrant colours. To the riders, George, Chun Chai 俊仔, Thai Chai 泰仔, Alex and Billy. Thanks for having made the rollerbladers come back. To all the actors and actresses, for their patience and because they really played the game. To Teresa. Thank you. For you being amazing, for your unique and silent way to talk to the camera. I'm shooting a short film with her, produced by Sophia. It should be finished in a few months.
To Anna, Neha and Yin Kei. Thank you for joining the team.
To my closest friends, Tommy, Samuel, Manu, and my family, for supporting me.

Undercover Wheels is pleased to welcome Dustin Werbeski to the team. Watch out dog!
Dustin is the resident photographer at Powerhouse Studios in Barcelona, Spain. When he's not busy shooting photos of your favorite pros, he leads by example, usually outskating them.
This section was shot between October and February 2011.
Filmed and Edited by Richie Eisler.
...with additional filming by Jordi Mestre, Simon Dorabialski and Josh Glowicki.

Bike For Three: All There Is To Say About Love
How did you become involved with Undercover?
I don’t even know how many years ago it was, but I do remember my first set of Undercover wheels. I clearly remember instantly falling in love/victim to the obsession I have with them. Since then, I doubt that I have even given any other wheels the opportunity to be in my frames for more then a single session. The very first time I rode UC’s was when I was handed down a used set from Richie E. Yet with their very first low quality core’s which had been numerously cracked by their previous owner, I still choose to ride them over my once thought to be adequate wheel brand. Because the quality of the urethane was so superior, that even with cracked cores, they allowed me to roll twice as fast as the last. And that grip! It was obvious why I kept taking all the second hand UC’s I could get. Until through a couple of friendly connections, I began to get flown the continual fix I needed for my addiction to the best quality of wheel possible.
What are your thoughts on the wheels?
Umm, I think I just answered this question with my first answer. I dig them. A lot!
How long have you been skating? why do you skate?
For just over the last and best 10 years of my life… Those years have so deeply and intensely moulded my body and brain, that they have unquestionably made me who I am today. So much so, that a single day can not pass, without a single blading related thought or idea finding itself entering my mind. But, I’d bet on average there are multiple hundreds of them a day. So with it being so naturally wired into my being, I really feel like I don’t have a choice anymore. For as dumb as it may sound, blading is just as much a part of me as my beating heart.
What was it like to shoot this section?
It was a dream. I’ve always wanted to skate Barcelona. The city seems to be designed for my style of skating. The endless perfectly hilly, smooth, tight, interwinding, cement city streets, completely infested with unfathomable “skate spots” on every street corner, in every park and every courtyard, made with such unique design, that they appear to be waiting for interaction. It’s a picturesque skating paradise. I look forward to the summer ahead, and the blading to be done and documented. Cause although this one was a pleasure, I now look forward to skating even more of my own style of spots, and not the ones which I am led to, usually with the purpose of photographing other skaters and their amazing talents. I am appreciative of these opportunities, as I have enjoyed the crews and sessions so far, thus producing the tricks seen in this edit.
So what’s the story with that lady?
We were playing on this little pad, when this woman in a biohazard uniform came around squirting syrup all over the scene. It’s the most interesting spanish skate stopper attempt i’ve seen yet. The spot was a sticky mess on arrival, maybe from past success, or probably failure of shoeing away us who find a different use of this object worth fighting over. I thank her for actually assisting me in getting the clip, which was made possible with that little extra slip.

A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times

B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to

B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?

Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
