NASA | Moon Phase and Libration North Up 2014
Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been in orbit around the Moon since the summer of 2009. Its laser altimeter (LOLA) and camera (LROC) are recording the rugged, airless lunar terrain in exceptional detail, making it possible to visualize the Moon with unprecedented fidelity. This is especially evident in the long shadows cast near the terminator, or day-night line. The pummeled, craggy landscape thrown into high relief at the terminator would be impossible to recreate in the computer without global terrain maps like those from LRO. The Moon always keeps the same face to us, but not exactly the same face. Because of the tilt and shape of its orbit, we see the Moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month. When a month is compressed into 24 seconds, as it is in this animation, our changing view of the Moon makes it look like it's wobbling. This wobble is called libration. The word comes from the Latin for "balance scale" (as does the name of the zodiac constellation Libra) and refers to the way such a scale tips up and down on alternating sides. The sub-Earth point gives the amount of libration in longitude and latitude. The sub-Earth point is also the apparent center of the Moon's disk and the location on the Moon where the Earth is directly overhead. The Moon is subject to other motions as well. It appears to roll back and forth around the sub-Earth point. The roll angle is given by the position angle of the axis, which is the angle of the Moon's north pole relative to celestial north. The Moon also approaches and recedes from us, appearing to grow and shrink. The two extremes, called perigee (near) and apogee (far), differ by more than 10%. The most noticed monthly variation in the Moon's appearance is the cycle of phases, caused by the changing angle of the Sun as the Moon orbits the Earth. The cycle begins with the waxing (growing) crescent Moon visible in the west just after sunset. By first quarter, the Moon is high in the sky at sunset and sets around midnight. The full Moon rises at sunset and is high in the sky at midnight. The third quarter Moon is often surprisingly conspicuous in the daylit western sky long after sunrise. Celestial north is up in these images, corresponding to the view from the northern hemisphere. The descriptions of the print resolution stills also assume a northern hemisphere orientation. This is my graduation movie.
A short movie about emotional phases of my life.
Every object stands metaphor for a phase.
Besides the form I want to convey a feeling of emptiness and anger.

Long exposure workflow with the IQ260 digital back | IQ2 workflow | Phase One
Phase One IQ2 digital backs: http://www.phaseone.com/IQ2 Test drive Phase One: http://www.phaseone.com/demo Watch photographer Michael Roscoe demonstrating the IQ260 long exposure workflow. "The IQ260 gives photographers a unique opportunity to shoot exposures of up to one hour and get images that are virtually noise-free from this massive 60 megapixel sensor. It's not ideal to shoot long exposures in bright outdoor conditions but with a bit of help from this 10-stop ND filter, I should be able to exploit the capabilities of this digital back. For the shoot today I'm using the IQ260. I'm using a Phase One 645DF+, a 35 mm lens, and a cable release. I'm mounting the camera system on a really steady tripod to make sure it doesn't move during exposure. The conditions are pretty still today but if is a bit more windy, I might want to weigh it down with a camera bag or a sandbag. To activate the long exposure mode, simply tap ISO on the home screen, go to Long Exposure Mode, On, and I'm going to use the default ISO 140 setting. All IQ backs have useful tools to help aid composition, so before I take a shot I'm going to use the alignment tool to help ensure I get a straight horizon. Before I attach the ND filter to the front of the lens, I'm going to compose my shot and then set the exposure setting in the current ambient conditions at ISO 140. I want a shutter speed of around 1/30s, so I'm going to adjust the aperture to f/16. Once I have captured the test shot I'm going to press the context menu icon in the plain mode to get some really useful options. Press the grid option to get an overlay on your current image. Long press this option to get some preset Grid Mode. There's also Line Style and Color choices to help the grid stand out against the captured image. This plain mode also has an useful tools to help check exposure. There's a histogram option, there's also an exposure warning tool that will highlight any areas that may be blown up. There's also Black and White preview mode that'll help you instantly see what your image looks like in monotone. I'm happy with the composition and exposure, so it's time to fit this ND filter that's known as the big stopper. It's now time to change the shutter speed on the camera. I currently shoot on 1/30s but if I rehearse the table on this back, I can see that I've go to adjust the shutter speed now to thirty seconds. Before I take the shot, I'm going to firstly put the camera in mirror up mode to stop any vibrations that that may cause. I'm going to close the eyepiece shutter to stop any stray light. If you're really cautious you can also wrap the whole camera with something like a lens wrap to stop any light leak that might get into the camera. I'm now finally ready to take the shot. I really like the effect but I'm going to experiment with some different shutter speed settings as the ambient light is dipping at the moment. I'm also hoping the weather conditions will change. It's a bit clear at the moment and I'd like a few clouds to add a bit of drama. I'm also hoping the wind will pick up to give the water a bit more of a fluid look."
