a roadtrip into the adirondack's with your girlfriend in the deep freeze of winter is a quiet escape into a mysterious land of snow and ice. earlier this year we took a drive across the border to visit friends and simply enjoy the below zero frozen landscape. i love winter. it's like a dreamstate. a cloud you enter into and get lost inside. the cold is pleasurable when you know there is the possibility of a burning woodfire inside and red wine or bourbon or scotch. i am always willing to freeze my toes and fingers in the snow... the burn is worth it. oh and then there is the sauna in the winter, in sioux lookout at my aunt's house on the lake... jumping into the snow in your birthday suit is something to experience at least once in your lifetime. but i digress.

fuss no. 1
with all of the mayoral debauchery... one can easily miss the good news in this city. across the river in leslieville lies a creative hub called Fuss Hair Studio. these women have been running their eclectic salon for over 5 years and have just been named Toronto's No. 1 salon by Now Magazine. i entrust these fun and down to earth ladies with my own do, as well as my kids (my son can frequently be seen in their instagram feed). Kristin does a mean preppy boy cut! if you haven't already... get your hair chopped here. the scalp massage is enough to make me want to visit daily.
congratulations to stacey & kristin & all of the stylists at Fuss for all of the attention... you guys are absolutely no. 1 in my books. xo RW
* Fuss commissioned me to capture their salon and all the talent for their new website launched earlier this year, and designed by none other than Chad Roberts.

observations from my travels through florence. quiet, still, slow. my travel photos are often small intimate moments of seeing. travelling for me is about sleeping in as long as i want, eating breakfast in bed, and wandering a foreign city in the hopes of getting lost in newness... giving myself up to discovery. in short, my vacations are the opposite of my very hectic life at home. i revel in the simplicity of walking with my camera alone... breathing deeply, stopping for strong coffee and just being present.
like snowflakes, each one singular
this year was a magical ride with mother nature. i believe it rained at least every other weekend. no one ever dreams of a soggy wedding day... but if it rains, it rains... and oh the beauty you can create on a foggy morning at the lake, or standing in a wet shiny street under richly green trees... we make the very most of it. it breathes life into our story. it defines our experience, our very own singular moment in time. nothing is perfect. that imperfection makes us memorable... and breathtaking. xo RW
pippa
right down to her name, this child is perfect. it is no wonder her parents are two of my favourite people. collaborating with them for their perfect summer english country wedding last year was a highlight... but meeting this small creature was certainly the icing on the cake. you can view their wedding here, or on Style Me Pretty. xo RW
boys will be boys
they're oh so quiet, shh, shh... and then! the spirit of boys. i want to eat them up. xo RW
at dusk with teddy
snuggles... before sleep wraps itself around you and takes you to dreamland. possibly my favourite time of day with this delicious boy. on sunday scarlett turns 8. where has all of that time gone? savouring what i can while i can before they leave the nest. so many beautiful stories to share with you... part two from erin & jonathan's wedding first... and then so many more delicious things i've been working on. coming up... next week.

bathtime outdoors
this sweet little guy is my son emerson. last summer we kept with tradition and gave emmie a bath on the cottage deck... in the little green basin all the grandchildren in the wood family have used over the years.
(in the very last frame you see emmie looking at a photo of his big sister in the tub when she was little)
the images are double exposures on kodak portra film shot on my uncles old minolta x700. the images that bleed through are from my dad's property in guelph... where i grew up.
winter at the manor
just a small collection of moments from a recent winter wedding... a blustery, sun-filled day in january. the backdrop for bronwyn & mike's grounded & beautiful wedding was the stunning graydon hall manor. i cherish small, intimate weddings for their sincere and honest nature. it is a beautiful thing to watch those normally guarded walls come open for one night... emotion on our skin... tears, laughter... what love is made of.
summerland
(miss scarlett photographed on kodak portra 160 / hasselblad)
the return of warm sunfilled days are just out of our reach. i'm craving the sultry days of summer.
lost, wandering barefoot on pine in the tranquil forest. looking for light. looking for life.
oh summer, where art thou?
i want your love
dan & mark. december 2012. florida
true love. the real kind. the respect they have for each other is palpable.
i wish for everyone to find and hold onto this kind of love. the kind mark & dan have cultivated.
i love them too and feel blessed to have them in my life.

the scent of pine needles under bare feet in a wedding gown... the sweetest thing. to be yourself on your wedding day, an honest, yet sometimes forgotten thing. to be yourself. not what the bridal magazines tell you, not what your aunt-in-law tells you, but what you feel to be true. weddings. notions on weddings. on what it means to marry, to plan, to host, to be a bride, to be a groom. "it's her day" dispel the myths, the preconceived ideas, and be true to yourself, to each other, to us.
in a heavily marketed society, we crave honesty, truth, real truths, earthy honest truths. the wedding celebration is a sacred and very old tradition. it's not just an excuse to have a huge party with no speeches. no, to long boring speeches... yes, to heartfelt, honest, well-written speeches that open up our hearts and allow us to know each other anew. to learn more. to dig deeper and to fall in love again, all over.
let us celebrate, let us live like tom thomson, "humbly but passionately with the wild"
jon & adina wed in the pines, the birch trees, under a flood of sunshine with their parents under the chuppah this summer at the mcmichael canadian art collection. an art gallery featuring the work of canadian artists, most notably tom thomson and the group of seven. we wandered through the grounds, discovering at every turn incredible scultpures, and my favourite, thomson's original cabin. the mcmichael is truly a magnificent backdrop to celebrate humbly but passionately with the wild.
* did you know? the mcmichael collection grew out of the dream of two people: Robert (1921-2003) and Signe (1921-2007) who were married in 1949 and worked together at Robert McMichaels Studios... a wedding photography business in toronto? in 1954 they built a four-room log house using salvaged pioneer hand-hewn logs and fieldstone on their ten acres of wooded land in kleinburg. the following year, they purchased Montreal River, a small oil sketch by Lawren Harris. by the early 1960's their personal collection had grown to the point where thousands of people a year were asking to see the art collection. by 1965 the couple had donated 194 works of art, the buildings and the land to the province of ontario. the collection continued to grow with their support for many years. the gallery is a national treasure honouring canada's cultural heritage. if you have never been... now is the time.

langdon hall wedding
From the Bride… We wanted to create a wedding day that felt like us and celebrated our family in as many ways as possible. It was important that we had a relaxed but elegant venue to host our guests and provide them with outstanding food and drink. After visiting many other venues, we knew as soon as we drove up the road to Langdon Hall that we had found the place we wanted to celebrate our marriage with loved ones. They had the most incredible food, and the staff was unbelievably warm and welcoming. After we had the perfect venue, I worked on creating as many personal details to share with guests as possible. Our favors were jars of honey made from the bee hives at the family cottage. We also tied a recipe to the jar from my husband’s grandmother for her famous baklava treats filled with honey. We had photos of us growing up, along with many of our wedding guests, pinned to vintage frames for guests to share stories about. We shared our favorite cocktails as our featured his and her drinks. We had a Polaroid camera booth with props to have guests interact with and take photos of one another for our guest book. Our sweets table included our favorite flavors and sweets, as well as pastries made by my grandmother and my husband’s grandmother.
I knew from the beginning I wanted to keep the décor to a palette of soft pink, white and gold with a vintage glamour theme. I created many of the pieces myself, from the pink and gold bunting in the trees to the hand-painted pinwheels that fanned our dessert table. I also worked with some incredible Etsy vendors to help me create as many customized pieces as possible without overwhelming the space. I rented vintage pieces to bring a sense of charm and whimsy that I felt the venue lent itself to. Our amazing wedding planner helped bring everything together for us and oversaw the entire day. We were relaxed from start to finish, and I can only attribute this to their incredible professionalism and attention to detail.
The parts of the wedding I treasure the most will be the memories we created with our family and friends. The thoughtful, sweet and laugh-until-you-cry wedding “speeches” from loved ones, the quiet moments with my new husband, playing croquet with my wedding party, taking picture of guests with their plastic mustaches and the dancing with our best friends until our feet hurt — then raiding the flip flop basket to keep going. These will be the moments we remember the most and we know are truly once-in-a-lifetime.

to prepare for you my love
i rise in the early morning light with butterflies in my stomach, my heart swelling, my breath short. a performance before me, the beginning but hardly the first chapter. for we've been together for some days now my love. the scent of your skin against mine, the taste of your kiss, the salty lips on mine, your heartbeat... i know thee well, yet today i prepare to meet you in front of an audience, the dearest of our hearts together with us. i do. until night falls and the sun rises and the world turns endlessly, i love you. and i will take your hand in mine and place a golden ring on your finger and take you as my love until death do us part, until the sea takes us into her arms to the stars. i am yours.
