Mike Nolan (born March 7, 1959 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American football coach and the current defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. He was formerly head coach for the San Francisco 49ers and a defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Washington Redskins, New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.^[1]

Nolan attended the University of Oregon and was a three-year letterman in football and starter at safety.

Coaching career[link]

He has coached at the collegiate level at Stanford University, Rice University, and LSU before moving on to the National Football League.

The son of former San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints head coach, Dick Nolan, he signed with the 49ers in 2005 to be head coach, following in his father's footsteps. Nolan joined San Francisco after establishing himself as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, a position he held with three other teams: New York Jets (2000), Washington Redskins (1997–99), and New York Giants (1993–96).

Nolan and the 49ers selected Alex Smith with the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Nolan thought Smith to be cerebral, introspective, and non-confrontational. Nolan also evaluated Aaron Rodgers but did not believe that Rodgers' attitude could co-exist with him.^[2] Nolan finished the 2005 season with a 4–12 record. Nolan led a late season run and the 49ers improved in 2006 to 7–9. That led to expectations for the 2007 season, which included at least 9 wins and a playoff appearance. The season started well at 2–0, but an 8-game losing streak ended all hope of a playoff run. During the season, he publicly disagreed with Smith over the severity of the quarterback's shoulder injury.^[3] Nolan had been under intense scrutiny in the Bay Area. After the season, Nolan lost his general manager position and on October 20, 2008, Nolan was fired and replaced by his assistant head coach Mike Singletary.

In early 2009 Mike Nolan became the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos under Josh McDaniels. With a new 3-4 defense the Denver Broncos gave up the fewest points in the NFL (66) during the first six games of the season, and made their way to their first 6–0 start since the 1998 season in which they won Super Bowl XXXIII. The Broncos went 2 and 8 the rest of the way, and missed the playoffs. On January 18, 2010 Mike Nolan and Josh McDaniels mutually decided Nolan would resign as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.^[1]

On January 19, 2010, Nolan was hired by the Miami Dolphins as Defensive Coordinator. On January 17, 2012, Nolan was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as Defensive Coordinator ^[4]

Suit issue[link]

Following his hiring by the 49ers, Nolan asked the NFL for permission to wear a suit and tie on the sidelines as a tribute to his father. The league initially denied Nolan's request because of the contract it has with Reebok for its coaches to wear team-logo attire, a ruling that was changed during Nolan's second season as coach. In the new NFL policy, coaches were allowed to wear a full suit for only two home games per season. The suits were designed, marketed and labeled under the Reebok corporation. Nolan debuted the suit in a game at home against the Seattle Seahawks on November 19, 2006. A day later, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio sported another Reebok suit on Monday Night Football. Both coaches won their weekend games.

After further lobbying by Nolan, the NFL and Reebok reached an agreement to allow suits to be worn at all home games in the 2007 season.^[5]

Coaching tree[link]

Mike Nolan has been linked to more than one coaching tree. He was a defensive coordinator for Brian Billick (who is part of the Sid Gillman/Bill Walsh coaching tree), Al Groh (who is part of the Bill Parcells coaching tree), and Norv Turner (part of the Jimmy Johnson tree). However, Nolan is most directly related to Dan Reeves. Reeves brought Nolan with him from Denver (where he was linebackers coach) to be the New York Giants defensive coordinator in 1993. Nolan excelled at the position and his success served as a springboard for later success with other teams.

Married (to Kathy Nolan) with four children, and a devout Roman Catholic.^[7] His sons are sometimes seen on the sidelines. He has three brothers and two sisters.

Mike Nolan's father, former 49ers coach Dick Nolan, died at age 75 on November 11, 2007, just a day before Mike's 49ers were to take on the Seattle Seahawks. Nolan decided to coach the Monday Night Football game in honor of his dad, but was not able to get the win.

Cheryl Baker (born Rita Maria Crudgington, 8 March 1954, Bethnal Green, London) is an English television presenter and singer.^[1] She is most famous for being a member of 1980s pop group Bucks Fizz, and has performed for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, winning it the second time.

Early career[link]

After leaving school and a series of secretarial jobs, Cheryl Baker began her professional singing career with the band Co-Co. The group entered A Song for Europe in 1976 with the song "Wake Up". They came second, being beaten by (eventual Eurovision winners) Brotherhood of Man by two points.

The group continued to perform together and in 1978, they entered A Song for Europe again with "The Bad Old Days". This time they won and went on to perform for the UK in Paris. The song managed 11th place - the lowest placing by a UK entry up to that point.^[2][3] The song became a hit single, reaching 13 in the UK Singles Chart. On the back of this, the group released their first (and only) album as well as further singles. None of these found any success.^[4]

In 1980, the group tried for Eurovision one more time. Now under a new name, The Main Event, their song "Gonna Do My Best" came last in A Song for Europe and soon afterwards, the group disbanded.

Bucks Fizz[link]

A few months later, Baker was contacted by Nichola Martin, who was setting up a new group under the name Bucks Fizz, with a view to entering a song "Making Your Mind Up" into the Song For Europe in 1981. Joined by Mike Nolan, Bobby G and Jay Aston, Baker performed the song at the contest and won. On 4 April 1981, Baker represented the UK again at the Eurovision Song Contest. The song went on to win by a margin of four points and Bucks Fizz were catapulted into overnight stardom.^[5]

By winning the contest, Baker became only the third singer to represent the UK twice, following in the footsteps of Ronnie Carroll and Cliff Richard. This feat, however, was matched once again the following year, by Sally Ann Triplett. When Bucks Fizz went on to win the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Making Your Mind Up", Baker thus became one of the few artists to take part in Eurovision to win at their second attempt. According to The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History by John Kennedy O'Connor, Baker also made the second single biggest improvement by any Eurovision competitor in the contest, moving up from eleventh in 1978 to 1st in 1981.^[6]

"Making Your Mind Up" became a No.1 hit in many countries, including the UK and began a run of success for the group for the next five years. Baker along with the group toured the world and gained many hit singles and albums, including two more British No.1s; "The Land Of Make Believe" and "My Camera Never Lies". Bucks Fizz became established as one of the biggest groups of the 1980s.^[7]

In December 1984, Baker was involved in a serious coach crash while on tour with the group. She was injured and rushed to hospital. Although she broke three vertebrae in her spine, she made a speedy recovery but colleague Mike Nolan suffered serious head wounds and following this, she helped set up the charity 'HeadFirst', which deals with crash victims, specifically relating to head injuries.^[8] Baker continues to raise money for this charity today.

Television career[link]

In the mid 1980s, while still with the group, Baker embarked on a career in television presenting. She joined Record Breakers as a co-host alongside the long-serving Roy Castle in 1987, continuing alongside new hosts after Castle's death in 1994, finally leaving the show in 1997 after 10 years.^[9]

She also co-presented The Saturday Picture Show with Mark Curry from 1985 to 1986.

She continued her singing and television careers in tandem, although always maintained that singing was her first love. Bucks Fizz scored their final hit in 1988, and in the same year, Baker began presenting her own TV show Eggs 'n' Baker. This went on to run for five years.

During this time, she also released two solo singles "If Paradise Is Half As Nice" in 1987 and "Sensuality" in 1992, although neither of these found chart success.^[10][11]

Still touring with the group, Baker finally quit Bucks Fizz in December 1993 to concentrate on raising a family.^[12] After leaving Bucks Fizz, Baker carried on presenting Record Breakers as well as other television work.^[13] In 1997 she became the subject of the TV Biography show This Is Your Life.^[14] Into the 2000s, Baker made many guest appearances on television. She has also participated in a number of reality television shows, such as Drop the Celebrity (which she won), 24-Hour Quiz (which she also won) and I'm Famous and Frightened!.^[12]

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, she read out the points from the United Kingdom. In the EBU's 50th anniversary celebration of the show Congratulations, she introduced the song "Waterloo" by ABBA. Later on during the same programme, she sang Bucks Fizz's winning song "Making Your Mind Up" live with Mike Nolan and Shelley Preston.

In 2006, Baker played the role of Vi Moore in the London production of Footloose, the musical based on the 1984 motion picture of the same name, at the Novello Theatre. In 2009 she directed a youth production of Footloose in Sevenoaks, playing to sell out audiences. In 2007 she played the part of Ida in the musical Honk! and in 2008 she was seen in the role of Mrs Mayor in a touring production of Seussical the Musical. The tour visited many towns in the South East of England.^[12]

In 2011, Baker appeared on All Star Family Fortunes.

Recent career[link]

Since 2004, Baker has been performing selected gigs with Nolan and Preston under the name The Original Bucks Fizz and alongside the other original members, Bobby G and Jay Aston, appeared in the video for Comic Relief's 2007 single, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". A Bucks Fizz CD with a bonus DVD, The Very Best of Bucks Fizz was released on 14 May 2007. A new CD of rare material The Lost Masters 2 - The Final Cut was released on 19 May 2008.^[15] In April 2009, Preston announced she was leaving The Original Bucks Fizz and has now been replaced by other original member Aston. This will be the first time Baker has performed with Aston since 1985.^[16]

Baker still raises money for HeadFirst and regularly makes personal appearances on behalf of the charity, such as on Celebrity Cash in the Attic in July 2008. She has also recently campaigned on behalf of IVF treatment and cleaner NHS hospitals.^[17]

In 2008 Cheryl became an Ambassador of Festival4Stars talent competition after she judged a national final.^[18] On the 28th of April 2009 She appeared on Loose Women to speak about the competition. During 2009 Baker toured with the musical Menopause.^[19] In late 2009 she revealed that she had been asked to appear in the 2010 series of Celebrity Big Brother, but declined the offer.^[20]

In 2011 she undertook a mini tour of the UK with The Original Bucks Fizz. She has also recorded a new album with them due to be released in June, with a concert at the London Palladium on 11 July 2011. In June 2011 she reached the final of the ITV series Popstar to Operastar, where she was beaten into second place by Joe McElderry.

Personal life[link]

Baker has three brothers Eddie, Colin and Gary and a sister, Sheila.^[21] She is one of an estimated^{[by whom?]} 24% of Britain's population to claim Irish heritage through her Irish-born grandmother. She married guitarist Steve Stroud in Lewisham, London, on 25 January 1992. Their twin daughters, Kyla Olivia and Natalie Maria, were born in Westminster, London, in 1994.^[22] She currently lives in Kent^[12] In 2006 she spoke out about her experiencing the menopause and resulting hair loss. This led to her being contracted to advertise Viviscal and Nourkrin which helps thinning hair. She has also spoken of her weight fluctuations over the years. During 2010 and 2011 she took part in a diet and advertising campaign for Jenny Craig, where after nine months had lost two and a half stone (35 lbs). In association with this she ran and completed the London Marathon for the HeadFirst charity.^[23]

Jay Hilda Aston (born 4 May 1961, Purley, Surrey) is a singer, dancer, and occasional songwriter who was formerly with the British pop group, Bucks Fizz. She was the youngest member of the group's original line-up, being just 19 at the Eurovision Song Contest.^[2]

Background[link]

Aston came from a theatrical family. Her father was a comedian, her mother a former dancer before she became her husband's straight man. They also performed as acrobats. Her brother, Lance, had performed at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 with the band Prima Donna.^[2] Aston herself trained as a dancer, singer and actress at the Italia Conti School of Speech and Drama and performed on stage many times in her teens mainly as a dancer.^[3]

Bucks Fizz[link]

Aston was one of the four original members of Bucks Fizz when they were formed in 1981 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. They won with Making Your Mind Up and the song went to number one in many countries, including the United Kingdom. The group went on to become one of the top selling groups of the 1980s and scored many hit single and albums over the next few years, including two more British Number 1s: The Land Of Make Believe and My Camera Never Lies. Aston's interest in fashion and design came into good use while with the group as she designed many of the group's stage outfits and created many memorable images.^[4][5][6] In 1983 she performed the lead vocal to the song When We Were Young, which went on to become one of the group's biggest hits.^[7]

Aston became known for her love of physical exercise and released a keep-fit album in early 1984 called Shape Up and Dance.^[8] This activity however also led to her becoming the victim of an attack while out jogging. She fought off the attacker and recovered well from the incident, which became the subject of newspaper coverage.^[9]

In December 1984, while on tour, Bucks Fizz were involved in a road accident in which Aston, along with the other members of the group were injured.^[10] By this time, tensions within the group had risen to the point that Aston was eager to leave, but was still under contract. However, the following year, she left the group in acrimonious circumstances.^[10] Aston became the subject of many newspaper headlines on her sudden departure where it emerged that she had been having an affair with the group's producer, Andy Hill, who was also the husband of Bucks Fizz creator, Nichola Martin. It was also revealed that after the affair was discovered, Aston attempted suicide, which left her hosptalised for two days.^[11] The group's management company took Aston to court under the terms of her contract but later agreed to release her.^[12] An injunction however was placed on her against commencing a solo career, which took two years to settle and left Aston on the brink of financial ruin.^[13]

After Bucks Fizz[link]

Forced to sell her house, the early 1990s saw Aston living in a small bedsit in Croydon on Housing benefits.^[14] Her brother had married Shakespear's Sister star Marcella Detroit who encouraged her to record new songs. In 1993 Aston released a single "Naked Phoenix" and recorded an album of songs. This same year she contributed a song to the controversial Michael Winner film, Dirty Weekend (although Aston walked out of the film's premiere in disgust).^[14] By 1995 she was living with her parents but was still writing and recording music. Around this time she met and began dating guitarist Dave Colquhoun, whom she married in 1999. During the latter part of the 1990s and early 2000s, Aston toured with her band Aston, performing rock and pop tracks, many of which she wrote herself. In 2002, she was involved in a cover band called Monster Boogie,^[2] and she also appeared in an episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks as one of the mystery guests in the Identity Parade round.^[2] In 2003 Aston released an album, Alive and Well with 13 tracks all of which she co-wrote with her husband.^[15]

In 2005 the glory years of Bucks Fizz, mainly focusing on Aston, were portrayed in a drag lip-synch show, Night of a Thousand Jay Astons at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe after its début in London. Aston was played by one female and three male performers.^[16] The life of Aston was told through an outrageous parody, and was described in review as "hilariously over the top".^[10][17] The show has also been staged at other venues including the Comedy Theatre in Dublin in May 2006^[18] and the Soho Theatre in London in summer 2007.^[19][10]

Another solo album, a 3 disc box-set Lamb or Lizard was released in July 2006 through her website, which featured recordings from before and after her work with Bucks Fizz.^[20]

In 2001 she set up a performing arts school in her name, The Jay Aston Theatre Arts School, teaching children aged 2–17.^[21] The school still runs today.

In March 2007, she appeared in the Comic Relief video "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" a comic cover version of The Proclaimers song, dancing with the fellow original members of Bucks Fizz.^[22] This was the first time that Aston had met the group since 1985. As she said, relations between them had improved, but not the extent that could work together as a group again. "I’m kind of on good terms with all of them individually. But as a band, it just doesn’t work, and it’s a shame, but it doesn’t. There’s always been two camps – Cheryl’s camp and Bobby’s camp, and I was the one in Bobby’s camp, and Mike was always in Cheryl’s camp." ^[23]

A new Bucks Fizz CD with a bonus DVD, The Very Best of Bucks Fizz was released in May 2007. Aston appeared alone on the National Lottery to promote the album. In August 2008, Aston once again joined up with Bucks Fizz members Mike Nolan and Cheryl Baker when she appeared on a television show celebrating 1980s acts - with one episode devoted to the reuniting of Bucks Fizz. This programme was shown on Living TV in March 2009.

In 2004, Bucks Fizz members Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Shelley Preston reunited to form The Original Bucks Fizz and performed in concert throughout the UK. In April 2009, Preston announced that she was leaving the group due to other commitments. Soon after, it was announced that Aston would be joining Baker and Nolan in the group for live shows - the first time she has been a part of Bucks Fizz since 1985.^[24] Together they undertook two UK tours and released a single. In 2012, the group still continues (now under the name OBF) and have released their first album.

Acting[link]

Before Bucks Fizz, Aston had ambitions to become an actress, but her career in this field encompassed only minor roles in To the Manor Born and Citizen Smith. In 2008, Aston was cast as Claudia Brite in the film The Last Days of Edgar Harding which was shot in August 2008 and screened in 2010.^[25][26] The film however has never seen a mainstream release.

Personal life[link]

Jay Aston married guitarist Dave Colquhoun in August 1999 in Greenwich, London.^[27] They have a daughter, Josie Alexandra (born 2003, Bromley, Kent).^[28] They currently live in Tatsfield, Surrey.^[29] Aston's mother Hilda died in 2005, while her father Ted died in 2009. She has spoken of her interest in learning more about Alzheimer's disease which he succumbed to.^[27] Aston continues to teach dance and performance at her performing arts school in Kent.^[30]
