“Reading habit not on the wane” Madurai Book Fair on Tamukkam Grounds from today Treat in store:Arrangements under way for the 11th edition of Madurai Book Fair on Tamukkam Grounds in Madurai on Thursday. The 11th edition of Madurai Book Fair is set to begin on Tamukkum Grounds here from Friday. The BAPASI (Booksellers’ and Publishers’ Association of South India)-sponsored fair would be open for business till September 12, Monday. Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, BAPASI secretary K.S. Pugalendi said that with the support of State government and officials, book fairs were running successfully in many cities and towns across Tamil Nadu. “That there is a rise in both sale of books and participating publishers year after year stand as testimonies to the success of book fairs. This being the fact, it is a fallacy that reading habit is on the wane. Media should project this positive development,” he said. He pointed out that last year alone the Madurai book fair registered a sale of Rs. 3 crore and this year Rs. 5 crore was targeted. The 11{+t}{+h}edition would witness participation of 250 stalls, including those of top publishers. In all about 2 lakh books on different topics and for different age groups would be on sale. “We are expecting around five lakh visitors in the next 10 days. With the entry being free and special discounts to be offered, we hope Madurai public will derive much benefit from it. There will be attractive offers for educational institutions that place bulk orders,” Mr. Pugalendi said. The BAPASI conducted book fairs in Chennai and Madurai, he said and thanked senior IAS officer T. Udayachandran for taking the initiative in the early days to bring publishers under one roof in Madurai. With State government support, book fairs could be conducted in other towns. The Tamukkam Grounds were let for a nominal rent. Making profits from the fair was not the objective and despite financial loss, the BAPASI conducted it regularly, Mr. Pugalendi said. The exhibition would be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and noted speakers would address readers on different topics every evening. Competition for students would form part of the book fair. Prizes would be given to winners. City Union Bank had come forward to install its ATM facility at the fair and many stalls would also accept credit cards, he said.
