For five months some journalists had kept an internet news feed going - until now. Former ERT journalist Nikos Tsimpidas says he was on air in the radio studio when the police raided. "A whole police squad came into the studio, they were behind my back, another team was outside. One of them with his face covered got in to film the whole thing, and their chief told me to turn off the microphone and stop speaking. I asked him if this was a firm order and he said yes," he told euronews. "My life changed because I decided that I have to react. Because no one can shut down the public television without having planned anything for the next day,. said another former ERT journalist, Marilena Katsimi. The raid came as international inspectors were in Athens reviewing Greece's progress made towards meeting bailout targets. A group of New Zealand citizens presented 159,00 petition signatures to the New Zealand government on Wednesday (6 November) calling on the government to make it illegal for New Zealanders to receive an organ overseas that has been trafficked or illegally harvested. The petition also urged the government to call on the Chinese Communist Party to end the persecution of Falun Gong, a peaceful meditation practice that enjoyed huge popularity in China until it was outlawed in 1999. Evidence suggests that Chinese state-run hospitals have been killing Falun Gong practitioners—selling their organs for transplant [Jan Logie, MP, Green Party]: "On behalf of Green party, we're happy to accept this petition of 159,000 new Zealanders' voices into this house, with a very clear demand for us to look at legislative measures to prevent New Zealanders from benefiting, not with knowledge or without knowledge through organ harvesting. And for us to make a statement against the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners within China." [Amanda Brydon, Amnesty International Manager]: "The reality is that practitioners face discrimination, violations to their rights of freedom of belief and expression, as well as torture, and there is a huge number of deaths in custody." "Today the handing over of almost 159,000 signatures is a deeply encouraging sign, as it shows the Chinese government that people around the world are paying attention to how they treat their citizens." Among the supporters of the petition were members of the Falun Gong community, over 120 of whom have been granted political asylum in New Zealand after fleeing the Chinese Communist Party's brutal crackdown.
