Film Screening: Mugabe: Villain or Hero?
New York University Wagner Student Alliance for Africa (WSAFA): film screening of Mugabe: Villain or Hero? Is there more to President Robert Mugabe and Zimbabwe than is being shown on our television screens? What's the true extent of Mugabe's support inside Zimbabwe? What has happened to the country that they called the bread basket of Africa- and why? All of these questions are tackled by British filmmaker Roy Agyemang in his documentary, Mugabe: Villain or Hero?. The film is an epic personal journey narrated by Agyemang who, together with his UK-based Zimbabwean fixer, found themselves in Mugabe's entourage, on Colonel Gaddefi's private jet and around a host of prominent African leaders. The film has been screened at the British Film Institute (BFI) in London, which is the home of film. It has recently been screened at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, where the filmmaker won the Special Reognition Jury Award at the festival. Also, the filmmaker recently screened the film in Selma, Alabama to commemorate "Blood Sunday", a civil rights march at the peak of the Civil Rights Movement in 1965.- published: 27 Dec 2013

Inside Story - Lifting sanctions: Mugabe's reward for reform
The European Union has eased sanctions against Zimbabwe. It has lifted travel and banking restrictions against a number of members of Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF party. It's reward for progress over political reforms, and further encouragement for a country preparing for what's hoped to be free and fair elections. Zanu PF has dismissed the measure as 'outrageous and preposterous', arguing that the sanctions are illegal anyway. And rights groups accuse the EU of putting economic interests ahead of human rights. They're worried about a deal done over Zimbabwe's diamond mines, which they say help keep Mugabe in power. Economic hardship and a series of disputed elections have been at the root of much of Zimbabwe's troubles.- published: 27 Dec 2013
