Archaeological reconstruction of Gallo-Roman (full size) bronze boar, 1st century bc, Neuvy-en-Sullias, Loiret, France. Although bronze and iron smelting were long well attested skills of Iron-Age (and preceding epoch) Gauls before any Roman expansion, the typological style of sculpture here shows evidence of hybridity - native fantastical Gaulish antecedents and Roman realism in tandem. Thus Gallo-Roman hybridity (perhaps competing forms of ambivalent-hybridity, see postcolonial discourse and Bhabha) is a totally novel typology in itself, reflecting the fluidity and fusion that come with peoples in a constant state of symbiosis. In part my homage to Goscinny’s and Uderzo’s much loved classic ‘Asterix’, the fictitious and comical account of fierce Gaulish resistance against imperial Roman ...

The ground on which the Grote Kerk was built has been a sacred place for centuries. Before the Romans arrived, it served as an open-air place of worship for the Batavians. Then, in the name of civilisation, the Romans built a stone temple for the Batavians in the first half of the first century.
