Marxism 2013 Conference
“Marxism is one of the best forums for debate in Australia” John Pilger gives a glowing review of the Marxism Conference. He will be returning to speak at Marxism 2013. Buy your tickets online today at www.marxismconference.org The talk on Saturday at 4 pm about taxing the rich looks interesting too.  Wonder who is giving that one? (0)

Marx and taxing economic rent in Australia
A very amateurish first draft by me on Marx and taxing economic rent, with too much explanation of basic ideas and then off on tangents and misunderstood ideas. http://docs.business.auckland.ac.nz/Doc/51-John-Passant.pdf

An article of mine on superannuation tax rorts in the Canberra Times
This is an article of mine in the Canberra Times on Tuesday 12 February. I argue that the benefits of the superannuation tax concessions go disproportionately and overwhelmingly to the rich and that it’s time to end the super tax rorts. (3)

Me in the media recently on tax

The 99 Passant
I am about half through compiling the first volume of my most read (readers’ view) or most interesting (my view) articles from this blog.  Keep an eye out for Volume I of the 99 Passant when it is published later this year. I’ll keep you updated. (0)

More threats
As some of you may know I have been censoring the posts of a serial pest who makes anti-Muslim and racist comments and has in the past threatened me. He has posted again saying that the next time he is in my area – he names my street – he’ll ‘drop in to say g’day’. Clearly this is an attempt to further intimidate me. If anything happens to me or my family here are his details to provide to police.  jack 58.96.105.106  He has a druid name email at txc. (0)

Doctors and other bruises
I am having various tests and analysis done with a range of doctors over the coming weeks so may not be as communicative as normal on this blog. Bear with me. Hopefully I will be back in the New Year fighting fit. (4)

Marxism and women's liberation
Sharon Smith from the US International Socialist Organization talks about Marxism and women’s liberation in a very interesting video from Socialism 2012 in the US. (0)

Digital disruption and tax
Me in The Conversation today, with my second piece on the likes of Google and other highly mobile digital companies not paying much tax in Australia. Digital disruption is eroding Australia’s tax base (0)

Strike to destroy Thatcher’s rotten legacy

The best way I reckon to respond to Thatcher’s death would be to bury her legacy – the current British government – with a general strike, something major unions have been discussing.

General strike in Syria intensifies revolt

The development of strikes and civil disobedience as a tactic inside Syria’s revolution points the way forward. As we have seen in Egypt and Tunisia, organised workers and strikes have a crucial role to play in toppling hated dictators.

Calls for an indefinite general strike in Egypt

Egyptian workers have formed a mass trade union group and are setting the date for a general strike.

Contours of the French revolt: an interview with John Mullen

There is a great feeling that the working class is at the centre of things, people are taking notice of it. That was really very, very inspiring.

What is your impression of the situation at the moment, and where the movement is headed?

It’s very, very exciting; there were very excited people at the demonstration the other day, thousands of people running along the boulevard chanting “general strike.” I haven’t seen this for 20 years.

Spanish general strike

We may be witnessing sections of the European working class re-learning the lessons of class struggle, assuming not all of them become disillusioned.

Strikes rock South Africa

There is something truly inspiring about seeing thousands of mostly black South Africans blockading roads and hurling rocks at police in Soweto, Johannesburg, again, writes Ben Hillier in Socialist Alternative. In the same district that saw the historic June 1976 uprising, which was the beginning of the end for apartheid, dissent and rebellion is once [...]

General strike challenges Bolivian Government

Morales’ words and actions are a clear example of the logic of reformism; the logic of attempting to reform a capitalist state. He is constrained by the needs of a capitalist economy, and as such, has moved against the working class.

And you thought neoliberalism was dead

A funny thing happened on the way to the Parthenon. Neoliberalism rose from the grave. Not that it was ever really dead. It has just been resting, waiting for its Keynesian cousin to exhaust itself. During the global financial crisis state spending replaced private spending in many countries. What that spending hasn’t done is address stagnant profit rates. There [...]

Is the Old Mole stirring?

Class struggle is just so old hat, isn’t it? Well, as 2 million striking Greek workers show, maybe not. The stakes are high. The Socialist Party Pasok won the Greek elections last year on a program of defending working class living standards and social services against attacks from the Conservative government. Socialist Prime Minister Papandreou [...]

Iran: a general strike?

Deepen and spread the Iranian revolution. Strike now for economic and political freedom. Nationalise industry under workers’ democratic control.
