Me interviewed by Sharon Firebrace this morning for Razor Sharp. It happens every Tuesday. http://sharonfirebrace.com/2013/12/03/john-passant-australian-national-university-8/ (0)

I am not surprised
I think we are being unfair to this Abbott ‘no surprises’ Government. I am not surprised. (0)

Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Snouts in the trough: capitalism is corrupt
Big business, politicians, even sports people are ripping off the system with their corruption. Tony Abbott’s expense rorts are not an aberration. Corruption is part and parcel of capitalism and a consequence of the exploitation of workers. Only by overthrowing the ruling class can we abolish the corruption of the system and its rulers and hangers-on and begin a new society where production is organised democratically to satisfy human need. Join this Socialist Alternative Discussion 6pm Thursday 21 November Note change of venue because of exams to: Room W108 Baldessin Building ANU www.sa.org.au canberra@sa.org.au (0)

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement
Haven’t heard about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a neoliberal and imperialist wet dream? Not surprising since it is being negotiated in secret and Abbott will try to spring it on us soon enough. I have written about it in the next Red Flag, due out on Wednesday. Subscribe now. And yes, we have digital subscriptions too. https://shop.redflag.org.au/?q=product-category%2Fred-flag-subscriptions (1)

NSA hacks Rupert Murdoch's phones
In breaking news the NSA has confirmed it has hacked Rupert Murdoch’s private phones for eleven years. ‘The fight against terrorism knows no bounds,’ spokesthing Joseph Dzhugashvili said.  Barack Obama said ‘Of course.’ Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott denied Australia’s spy agencies had broken any AUSTRALIAN laws in helping the Americans. Kim Carr and me

This is me at Kim Carr’s launch at the ANU of his new book on why you should sell your soul to the devil and join the ALP.

Not in our name! Statement from Egypt’s Revolutionary Socialists

We must build popular committees to defend ourselves against attacks by the Brotherhood and to protect our revolution which will not subside before it overthrows the regime, and before it wins bread, freedom and social justice, and retribution for all the killers of the martyrs.

Some forthcoming refugee demonstrations

On the back of the largest protests for refugee rights in years, more upcoming rallies have been called for the coming week! Share this list around and help build resistance to the disgraceful policies of the major parties!

Damn the Labor Party

I am proud of banners that say F**k Labor. This expresses the justified anger many have with Labor over its plans to deport asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea. It is part of the Left relating to that section of society disgusted with the ALP’s actions and which is an audience for ideas of not just anger and rage against Labor but understanding why Labor does this. The real hope is in the ten thousand people who demonstrated last weekend against Labor’s disgraceful action and who will continue to fight for refugees.

Regular radio interview 3 KND

I have my regular Tuesday morning interview tomorrow morning at 7.30 am on 3 KND with Sharon Firebrace.

Songs for the band unformed

The sea is calm, tonight.

The mainstream media and the airbrushing of dissent

Under the present mainstream media duopoly the views of a large number of Australians are silenced.

Fringe benefits tax and cars

Given that salary sacrificing for employees in the Not for Profit sector is widespread as a way of compensating for very low wages, many low paid NFP workers will have their real after tax wages cut by the Rudd Labor government’s proposed abolition of the Fringe Benefits Tax statutory method. I have a novel suggestion. Pay low paid workers much more.

Saturday’s socialist speak out

The dominance of the two major parties of neoliberalism and the ongoing and inevitable shift further and further to the right on not just refugees but almost every issue imaginable can only be challenged by that minority of the minority understanding the systemic roots of racism and the need to smash the system to smash its various oppressions. That requires building a revolutionary socialist organisation to be the expression of the oppressed and the militant section of the working class. In our own small way, aiding the development of that understanding and helping build the resistance is what we in Socialist Alternative are trying to do.
