I am not surprised
I think we are being unfair to this Abbott ‘no surprises’ Government. I am not surprised. (0)

Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Snouts in the trough: capitalism is corrupt
Big business, politicians, even sports people are ripping off the system with their corruption. Tony Abbott’s expense rorts are not an aberration. Corruption is part and parcel of capitalism and a consequence of the exploitation of workers. Only by overthrowing the ruling class can we abolish the corruption of the system and its rulers and hangers-on and begin a new society where production is organised democratically to satisfy human need. Join this Socialist Alternative Discussion 6pm Thursday 21 November Note change of venue because of exams to: Room W108 Baldessin Building ANU www.sa.org.au canberra@sa.org.au (0)

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement
Haven’t heard about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a neoliberal and imperialist wet dream? Not surprising since it is being negotiated in secret and Abbott will try to spring it on us soon enough. I have written about it in the next Red Flag, due out on Wednesday. Subscribe now. And yes, we have digital subscriptions too. https://shop.redflag.org.au/?q=product-category%2Fred-flag-subscriptions (1)

NSA hacks Rupert Murdoch's phones
In breaking news the NSA has confirmed it has hacked Rupert Murdoch’s private phones for eleven years. ‘The fight against terrorism knows no bounds,’ spokesthing Joseph Dzhugashvili said.  Barack Obama said ‘Of course.’ Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott denied Australia’s spy agencies had broken any AUSTRALIAN laws in helping the Americans. May Day

Friday is May Day, the day of international working class solidarity and the commemoration of  workers’ struggles, in particular the often bloody fight for an 8 hour day. In Australia the union eunuchs and Labor lapdogs ‘cancelled’ the Day long ago. When class struggle revives and society moves to the Left, May Day will revive here. But the spirit of [...]

What’s behind killer swine flu?

Concentrated poverty is one of the most important issues in what happens to a flu outbreak – how it is spread and who it hits.

Pirate Pratt

Somali pirates earned about $50 million last year. The West is preparing to blast them out of the water. Richard Pratt’s cartel fixed prices and ripped $700 million off us. In death the ruling class lauds him. The Somalis are in the wrong business.

Afghanistan – the new Vietnam?

The world is mad. Sending more troops to Afghanistan is our exit strategy!

Urinal art

Here in Canberra the Labor Party Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has announced his government will phase out funding for its public art program. That’s a pity.  Inspired by the people of Iceland, I was going to suggest that we in Canberra set aside ten thousand dollars or so for urinal art. We could put water-proof images of our favourite capitalists in [...]

Jackboot junkies and bikie gangs

The ABCC; the ‘bikie gang’ laws; anti-terrorism laws; the loss of habeas corpus – the ruling class jackboots are stirring.

Let us remember our fallen at work

Tuesday is the International Day of Mourning for workers killed on the job.  Last year 440 workers in Australia died at work and many more were injured.  One building worker a week loses their life on the job. I pay my respects to all those who have died or been seriously injured at or from [...]

$90 now!

Let’s push for a $90 a week pay increase for workers and pensioners. If it is good enough for politicians it is good enough for those they serve.

Bankers – taking the piss

There’s a wonderful photo in today’s Australian showing urinals in Reykjavik , Iceland’s capital, decorated with images of former bankers.

Real tax reform: a love letter to Ken Henry

We should look at taxation through the eyes of the working class. Tax labour lightly and capital heavily.
