Lembah Bujang or Bujang Valley is a sprawling 224 sq km site near Merbok, Kedah, stretching between Gunung Jerai (Jerai Mountain) to the north and the Sungei Muda (Muda River), in the south. It was the site of an organised society, dating back more than 2000 years and which left behind more than fifty ancient temples.
Evidence that Kedah was once the centre of an iron production site has been unearthed. Iron smelting furnaces were found in Jeniang, not far from the Sungai Batu site, Bujang Valley.
Such is the international interest in Bujang Valley that in July 2010 a conference, jointly organised by the Department of National Heritage and the Universiti Sains Malaysia, was held. The discoveries of Sungai Batu were attracting the attention of historians and archaeologists. The conference therefore was an opportunity to present Sungai Batu site and enjoy an exchange of ideas and knowledge with international, regional and local scholars.
SUNGAI BATU and JENIANG Sites (1st CENTURY AD - 2,000 YEARS)
The Sungai Batu site can be located on longitude 5o41’73. 3 ’’North and latitude 100o27’19.7’. East co-ordinates, and is 18 meters above sea level, taken from the GPS (Global Positioning System) reading at the datum point of the study site.
The site, situated in an oil palm estate, is near the new Merbok-Semeling Road, and is about 10km from Sungai Petani, and 80km from Alor Star. It was discovered during development works to the oil palm plantation, which exposed brick structures.
This new site is also still within the sphere of influence of the Bujang Valley civilisation which might also have been associated with other sites such as Batu Pahat, Pengkalan Bujang, Kampung Bendang Dalam.
Sungai Batu Site
Sungai Batu is part of the Bujang Valley complex. Excavation work carried out by the Centre of Global Archaeological Research, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) , Penang, with the support of the Department of National Heritage, began in 2007.
Sungai Batu holds evidence of Southeast Asia’s earliest civilization, complete with a strong economic foundation, that of iron smelting and the exportation of Iron ore on a large scale. It is older than the ancient sites of Borobudur or Angkor Wat. Some 97 sites have been identified but currently only 20 interlinked sites have been excavated.
Dating back to the 1st century AD, the iron industry continued until the 8th century. Preliminary scientific comparisons between black iron found in Sungai Batu and that found in Arabia and India, are hoping to confirm records from those countries that refer to the import of such iron from Kedah. The discovery of a stone with Pallava inscriptions indicates a link with the Pallava Dynasty of northern Tamil Nadu, India.
Supporting the theory of export trade was the discovery of jetty like structures, and roof tiles, found near, what is now a small stream but 2,000 years ago was a river plying with craft deep into the Bujang Valley and across the waters to India and Arabia.
One unexpected find was a brick monument, dated 110 AD, made up of three parts; a circular base or floor of 10.61 meters in diameter, a square upper part of 5.51 meters by 5.51 meters with a central hole, 1.61 meters in diameter. The features of the site and the discoveries in the surrounding area indicate a place of worship, likely related to nature and the cosmos. Such sites occur world wide, but it was an unexpected find in Malaysia.
With this find, the most important in the region, the history of Southeast Asia will need to be rewritten.

Bujang Valley
The Bujang Valley or Lembah Bujang is a sprawling historical complex and has an area of approximately 224 km2. Situated near Merbok, Kedah, between Gunung Jerai in the north and Muda River in the south, it is the richest archaeological area in Malaysia.
These archaeological remains show that there was a Hindu-Buddhist polity here. In sanskrit the term bhujanga refer to serpent, thus the name itself is roughly translated into "Serpent Valley". The area consists of ruins that may date more than 2000 years old. More than fifty ancient tomb temples, called candi (pronounce "chandi"), have also been unearthed. The most impressive and well-preserved of these is located in Pengkalan Bujang, Merbok. The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is also located here. In the area of Bujang Valley known as Sungai Batu, excavation have revealed jetty remains, iron smelting sites, and a clay brick monument dating back to 110AD, making it the oldest man-made structure to be recorded in Southeast Asia.

A valley is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it.
In geology, a valley or dale is a depression that is longer than it is wide. The terms U-shaped and V-shaped are descriptive terms of geography to characterize the form of valleys. Most valleys belong to one of these two main types or a mixture of them, (at least) with respect to the cross section of the slopes or hillsides.
Valley terminology
A valley in its broadest geographic sense is also known as a dale. A valley through which a river runs may also be referred to as a vale. A small, secluded, and often wooded valley is known as a dell or in Scotland as a glen. A wide, flat valley through which a river runs is known in Scotland as a strath. A mountain cove is a small valley, closed at one or both ends, in the central or southern Appalachian Mountains which sometimes results from the erosion of a geologic window. A small valley surrounded by mountains or ridges is sometimes known as a hollow. A deep, narrow valley is known as a cwm (also spelled combe or coombe). Similar geological structures, such as canyons, ravines, gorges, gullies, and kloofs, are not usually referred to as valleys. See also: "chine". Lembah Bujang or Bujang Valley is a sprawling 224 sq km site near Merbok, Kedah, stretching between Gunung Jerai (Jerai Mountain) to the north and the Sungei Muda (Muda River), in the south. It was the site of an organised society, dating back more than 2000 years and which left behind more than fifty ancient temples.
Evidence that Kedah was once the centre of an iron production site has been unearthed. Iron smelting furnaces were found in Jeniang, not far from the Sungai Batu site, Bujang Valley.
Such is the international interest in Bujang Valley that in July 2010 a conference, jointly organised by the Department of National Heritage and the Universiti Sains Malaysia, was held. The discoveries of Sungai Batu were attracting the attention of historians and archaeologists. The conference therefore was an opportunity to present Sungai Batu site and enjoy an exchange of ideas and knowledge with international, regional and local scholars.
SUNGAI BATU and JENIANG Sites (1st CENTURY AD - 2,000 YEARS)
The Sungai Batu site can be located on longitude 5o41’73. 3 ’’North and latitude 100o27’19.7’. East co-ordinates, and is 18 meters above sea level, taken from the GPS (Global Positioning System) reading at the datum point of the study site.
The site, situated in an oil palm estate, is near the new Merbok-Semeling Road, and is about 10km from Sungai Petani, and 80km from Alor Star. It was discovered during development works to the oil palm plantation, which exposed brick structures.
This new site is also still within the sphere of influence of the Bujang Valley civilisation which might also have been associated with other sites such as Batu Pahat, Pengkalan Bujang, Kampung Bendang Dalam.
Sungai Batu Site
Sungai Batu is part of the Bujang Valley complex. Excavation work carried out by the Centre of Global Archaeological Research, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) , Penang, with the support of the Department of National Heritage, began in 2007.
Sungai Batu holds evidence of Southeast Asia’s earliest civilization, complete with a strong economic foundation, that of iron smelting and the exportation of Iron ore on a large scale. It is older than the ancient sites of Borobudur or Angkor Wat. Some 97 sites have been identified but currently only 20 interlinked sites have been excavated.
Dating back to the 1st century AD, the iron industry continued until the 8th century. Preliminary scientific comparisons between black iron found in Sungai Batu and that found in Arabia and India, are hoping to confirm records from those countries that refer to the import of such iron from Kedah. The discovery of a stone with Pallava inscriptions indicates a link with the Pallava Dynasty of northern Tamil Nadu, India.
Supporting the theory of export trade was the discovery of jetty like structures, and roof tiles, found near, what is now a small stream but 2,000 years ago was a river plying with craft deep into the Bujang Valley and across the waters to India and Arabia.
One unexpected find was a brick monument, dated 110 AD, made up of three parts; a circular base or floor of 10.61 meters in diameter, a square upper part of 5.51 meters by 5.51 meters with a central hole, 1.61 meters in diameter. The features of the site and the discoveries in the surrounding area indicate a place of worship, likely related to nature and the cosmos. Such sites occur world wide, but it was an unexpected find in Malaysia.
With this find, the most important in the region, the history of Southeast Asia will need to be rewritten.

Lembah Bujang or Bujang Valley is a sprawling 224 sq km site near Merbok, Kedah, stretching between Gunung Jerai (Jerai Mountain) to the north and the Sungei Muda (Muda River), in the south. It was the site of an organised society, dating back more than 2000 years and which left behind more than fifty ancient temples. Evidence that Kedah was once the centre of an iron production site has been unearthed. Iron smelting furnaces were found in Jeniang, not far from the Sungai Batu site, Bujang Valley. Lembah Bujang or Bujang Valley is a sprawling 224 sq km site near Merbok, Kedah, stretching between Gunung Jerai (Jerai Mountain) to the north and the Sungei Muda (Muda River), in the south. It was the site of an organised society, dating back more than 2000 years and which left behind more than fifty ancient temples.
Evidence that Kedah was once the centre of an iron production site has been unearthed. Iron smelting furnaces were found in Jeniang, not far from the Sungai Batu site, Bujang Valley.
Such is the international interest in Bujang Valley that in July 2010 a conference, jointly organised by the Department of National Heritage and the Universiti Sains Malaysia, was held. The discoveries of Sungai Batu were attracting the attention of historians and archaeologists. The conference therefore was an opportunity to present Sungai Batu site and enjoy an exchange of ideas and knowledge with international, regional and local scholars.
SUNGAI BATU and JENIANG Sites (1st CENTURY AD - 2,000 YEARS)
The Sungai Batu site can be located on longitude 5o41’73. 3 ’’North and latitude 100o27’19.7’. East co-ordinates, and is 18 meters above sea level, taken from the GPS (Global Positioning System) reading at the datum point of the study site.
The site, situated in an oil palm estate, is near the new Merbok-Semeling Road, and is about 10km from Sungai Petani, and 80km from Alor Star. It was discovered during development works to the oil palm plantation, which exposed brick structures.
This new site is also still within the sphere of influence of the Bujang Valley civilisation which might also have been associated with other sites such as Batu Pahat, Pengkalan Bujang, Kampung Bendang Dalam.
Sungai Batu Site
Sungai Batu is part of the Bujang Valley complex. Excavation work carried out by the Centre of Global Archaeological Research, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) , Penang, with the support of the Department of National Heritage, began in 2007.
Sungai Batu holds evidence of Southeast Asia’s earliest civilization, complete with a strong economic foundation, that of iron smelting and the exportation of Iron ore on a large scale. It is older than the ancient sites of Borobudur or Angkor Wat. Some 97 sites have been identified but currently only 20 interlinked sites have been excavated.
Dating back to the 1st century AD, the iron industry continued until the 8th century. Preliminary scientific comparisons between black iron found in Sungai Batu and that found in Arabia and India, are hoping to confirm records from those countries that refer to the import of such iron from Kedah. The discovery of a stone with Pallava inscriptions indicates a link with the Pallava Dynasty of northern Tamil Nadu, India.
Supporting the theory of export trade was the discovery of jetty like structures, and roof tiles, found near, what is now a small stream but 2,000 years ago was a river plying with craft deep into the Bujang Valley and across the waters to India and Arabia.
One unexpected find was a brick monument, dated 110 AD, made up of three parts; a circular base or floor of 10.61 meters in diameter, a square upper part of 5.51 meters by 5.51 meters with a central hole, 1.61 meters in diameter. The features of the site and the discoveries in the surrounding area indicate a place of worship, likely related to nature and the cosmos. Such sites occur world wide, but it was an unexpected find in Malaysia.
With this find, the most important in the region, the history of Southeast Asia will need to be rewritten.

His present research area is ‘Culture through Geography.Going beyond the emotional approach to the existence of Lemuria, Balasubramani , in addition to the study of literary references, conducts experiments on the Tamil coast making use of the traditional knowledge of the coastal community. He claims, which is important, that the traditional sailors and fishermen have a lot to contribute towards our knowledge of navigation , tsunamis and how transgression and regression in the Tamil Nadu coast had affected history, society and livelihoods.

Lembah Bujang’s significance as Southeast Asia’s central port was evident in archaeological finds and writings of Chinese and Arab seamen as well as in Indian literature. These chronicles, dated between the 2nd and 14th century AD, told of the existence of a prosperous and bustling kingdom in Lembah Bujang that was known as the "seat of all felicities". Besides being the Nusantara’s ultimate trading center, Lembah Bujang also the focal point of Hindu/Buddha propagation in Southeast Asia during the 3rd to the 12th century, which proved of the existence of Buddhisme with Pala Mahayana influences from southern India. Plot Summary:
A villager, Basavaraj alias Belli, is an innocent man, who along with his four friends, comes to Bangalore to make their livelihood. Belli has now unknowingly landed in underworld and is unable to come out of it even if he wants. His friends also get allegedly involved in all the criminal activities Belli does. Meanwhile he also manages to fall in love with Sneha (Kriti Kharbanda) but suffers heartbreak as she rejects him because of the field he has chosen. Plot Summary:
A villager, Basavaraj alias Belli, is an innocent man, who along with his four friends, comes to Bangalore to make their livelihood. Belli has now unknowingly landed in underworld and is unable to come out of it even if he wants. His friends also get allegedly involved in all the criminal activities Belli does. Meanwhile he also manages to fall in love with Sneha (Kriti Kharbanda) but suffers heartbreak as she rejects him because of the field he has chosen. Depression followed by heartbreak lands Basavaraj aka Belli in a ‘loss of mental stability’ state
