The Elonex ONE (also referred to as ONE) is a netbook computer marketed to the education sector by Elonex. The ONE's operating system is called Linos, based on Linux kernel 2.6.21,^[1] has Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet networking, a solid-state hard drive, two USB ports and weighs less than 1 kg.^[2]

The ONE has been described by Elonex as the cheapest laptop in the UK and will retail for £99 in the UK. Its official unveiling took place on 28 February 2008 at The Education Show at the NEC in Birmingham^[3] and a shipping date of June 2008 was announced.^[4]

In February 2008, Elonex stated their vision is for every pupil to have their own laptop to improve computer literacy across the nation. Elonex have aligned the cost of the ONE with the aims of the DCSF closing the achievement gap between those from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. To support this initiative Elonex have committed to donate 1 ONE to underprivileged children from disadvantaged areas for every hundred sold.^[5]

The ONE is similar to the A-View or AW-300 A-BOOK products from Aware.^[7] They use an Aday 5F-300 MHz X86 processor. An earlier Aware product the AW-150 is sold in the USA for $199 as the MiTYBOOK.^[8][9]

Elonex revealed further notebook models at Computex in June 2008.^[10][11][12]

Delivery[link]

The shipment date at the product announcement was stated as June 2008. The lack of communication from the supplier and some confusing email messages^[13] has led to comment on internet blogs regarding a perceived delay. The last email sent to potential customers on 16 June 2008 stated that

Delivery began July 11 onwards.^[14][15] They have been received as early as August 1.^[16][17]

Pre-order customers received an email in July 2008 containing a link to confirm their order. On clicking this link, Elonex offered a free upgrade to a new model, the Elonex ONEt, though it was possible to continue with the order for a Elonex One. The ONEt has a similar specification but with a faster 400 MHz processor, though its keyboard is non-detachable and it does not offer the bluetooth feature or the higher 256 MB memory of the original upgraded ONE. A presentation of ONEt model is available on the company website.^[18]

In August 2008, Elonex contacted customers who had ordered coloured models and explained that there was a further delay due to shipment problems. They offered either a black One+ for immediate delivery or an alternative ONEt model for delivery in September 2008.

Customers who were promised delivery by early August, have now been assured delivery by 5 September 2008 at the latest, and before the school term starts.

Customer deliveries started in September 2008.

Elonex introduced the One successor at IFA 2009. It's a smartbook based on ARM 11 CPA and Windows CE OS.^[19]

John Maeda (born 1966 in Seattle, Washington) is a Japanese-American graphic designer, computer scientist, university professor, and author. His work in design and technology explores the area where the two fields merge. He is the current President of the Rhode Island School of Design.^[1]

Maeda was originally a software engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, when he became fascinated with the work of Paul Rand and Muriel Cooper. Cooper was a director of MIT's Visual Language Workshop. After completing his bachelors and masters degrees at MIT, Maeda studied in Japan at Tsukuba University's Institute of Art and Design to complete his Ph.D. in design.

In 1999, he was named one of the 21 most important people in the 21st century by Esquire.^[2] In 2001, he received the National Design Award for Communication Design in the United States and Japan's Mainichi Design Prize.^[3] He is a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council.^[4]

In 2006, Maeda published Laws of Simplicity, his best-selling book to date, based on a research project to find ways for people to simplify their life in the face of growing complexity.

The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History is a 1978 book by Michael H. Hart, reprinted in 1992 with revisions. It is a ranking of the 100 people who, according to Hart, most influenced human history.^[1]

The first person on Hart's list is the Prophet of Islam Muhammad.^[2] Hart asserted that Muhammad was "supremely successful" in both the religious and secular realms. He also believed that Muhammad's role in the development of Islam was far more influential than Jesus' collaboration in the development of Christianity. He attributes the development of Christianity to St. Paul, who played a pivotal role in its dissemination."^[3]

The 1992 revisions included the demotion of figures associated with Communism, such as Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong, and the introduction of Mikhail Gorbachev. Hart took sides in the Shakespearean authorship issue and substituted Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford for William Shakespeare. Hart also substituted Niels Bohr and Henri Becquerel with Ernest Rutherford, thus correcting an error in the first edition. Henry Ford was also promoted from the "Honorary Mentions" list, replacing Pablo Picasso. Finally, some of the rankings were re-ordered, although no one listed in the top ten changed position.

Hart wrote another book in 1999, entitled A View from the Year 3000,^[4] voiced in the perspective of a person from that future year and ranking the most influential people in history. Roughly half of those entries are fictional people from 2000–3000, but the remainder are actual people. These were taken mostly from the 1992 edition, with some re-ranking of order.
