Media Circus #spill edition
Parliamentary Labor Caucus will meet at 4:30PM to vote on all leadership positions.
It’s almost as though there’s a causal link here…
The gender pay gap has doubled over the last year — with women, as usual, coming off worst. Meanwhile in NSW for the first time girls have outperformed boys in maths as well as every other HSC subject. Despite the hand-wringing about how and why our education system is failing our boys I would suggest that our boys aren’t being failed at all. I would hypothesise, quite simply, that boys don’t work as hard at their schoolwork because they don’t have to.

Outland Open Thread: Episodes 1 and 2
Last week saw the premiere of a new Australian comedy, Outland, penned by John Richards and Adam Richard, which focuses on the lives of a club for gay sci-fi geeks (or “science fiction enthusiast homosexualists” as club member Rae would prefer).
Quick Hit: Allie Brosh’s “Adventures in Depression”
It’s been almost a month since Allie Brosh posted this at her blog Hyperbole and a Half, but I only just saw it: Adventures in Depression. I know I can definitely relate to this, and I have the feeling that I’m not the only one. Related posts: Blogging Against Disablism Day – link round up [...]
Small (Environmental) Economies
I think that most of us here probably waste far more than we need to (I certainly do), but at the same time, most of us probably have our own little small personal economies to reduce waste, and it strikes me that sharing these with each other could be useful.
Whoydensday: Vale Lis Sladen 1948-2011
Elisabeth Sladen, our beloved Sarah Jane Smith, has died, aged 63. She died after a struggle with cancer that she chose not to make public. Lis Sladen has touched many people through her portrayal of Sarah Jane, both in Doctor Who between 1973 and 1976, and in The Sarah Jane Adventures, between 2007 and 2010. [...]
Whoydensday: Vale Nicholas Courtney (1929-2011)
Raise a glass tonight for Nicholas Courtney, who played UNIT’s Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart in Doctor Who, appearing with the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh Doctors, and also in a 2008 episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures. He died last night. None of the news sites I’ve seen mention a cause of death, [...]
Today in Double Standards
Isn’t it interesting, that in this particular instance, the blame seems to be directed at the person who is distributing these photos when they shouldn’t be, rather than at the people who actually posed for the photograph? There are no platitudes about how careful men need to be, or about how they need to be educated about the consequences of their actions.
Summer Spider Blogging
Since summer has begun, to my delight and my partner’s chagrin, our little courtyard has been filled with spiders. Although they are taking up a lot of space on my washing line, I am reluctant to deprive them of the beautiful homes that they have built for themselves. Photos below the fold, for those who [...]
In Support of Captain Bridget Clinch
Captain Bridget Clinch is a pretty awesome woman. It’s because of her that the Australian Defence Force changed its policy, which banned people undergoing or contemplating gender reassignment from serving. She risked the job she loves — the job she’s wanted since she was a teenager — in order to be able to serve openly [...]
