PSMA Systems
Scope
PSMA Australia is committed to the spatial enablement of Australia’s information economy. The first step to ‘spatial enablement’ is recognising that thinking about location can improve decision-making and business outcomes. The second step is to be able to introduce location into the process itself, simply, quickly and cost effectively. Traditional business processes are not inherently spatial. This is not surprising as the technology and data necessary to support such a process have been expensive, difficult to master and information hard to source.
PSMA Systems provides an easy and reliable way to incorporate location into existing process, workflows and location. This is achieved through PSMA Systems’ central focus on address, the key to extracting value from location. Address is the one attribute that is virtually universal across business and government. It provides the link between complex spatial information and business applications. The governments of Australia have recognised the important role of address by establishing, across all governments, a framework for its management.
The second element is the application of web services to allow the seamless shift from ‘thinking location’ to business processes ‘using location’. Through the use of web services, location is applied to existing processes, workflows and applications in an easy and reliable way. By using address as the key entry point, it makes it possible to easily integrate existing business systems with a wide range of address management, validation, spatial directories look-up and geocoding services.
PSMA Systems allows for the reuse of services not only by PSMA Australia but by other PSMA Australia stakeholders and customers within the supply chain. Web services are being used through PSMA Systems by a number of Australian state governments. These instances combine an orchestration platform in PSMA Systems with services such as address validation and geocoding provided by commercial vendors. The supply chain stakeholder defines the function using the PSMA Systems orchestration platform. This function may call one or many services and one or many data sources. The function takes only minutes for a stakeholder developer to define and can then be consumed by an existing stakeholder application. The stakeholder developer defines the function capability and controls access rights to this function based on parameters set within the PSMA Systems orchestration platform.

Australia’s spatial information user community has grown exponentially in recent years, fuelled by rapid growth in technology, computing power and mobile communications.
As the market matures, this community expects more from the data it uses. These demands encompass and challenge all aspects of quality such as accuracy of content and structure, completeness and currency as well as the flexibility of delivery and existing business models.
