Yamina Bachir

Yamina Bachir (born 20 March 1954) is an Algerian film director and screenwriter. Her film Rachida was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

Career and personal life

Bachir attended the National Film School where she studied editing. She is best known for her work Rachida which took her five years to produce.Rachida has been the only Algerian film screened for the Un Certain Regard prize.

Bachir is married to fellow Algerian director Mohammed Chouikh. She has a son and three daughters.

Cheb

Cheb (Czech pronunciation: [ˈxɛp]; German: Eger), is a city in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, with about 33,000 inhabitants. It is situated on the river Ohře (also called Eger in German), at the foot of one of the spurs of the Smrčiny and near the border with Germany. Prior to 1945, which saw the expulsion of the German speaking population, the town was the centre of the German-speaking region known as Egerland, and was part of the Northern Austro-Bavarian dialect area.

The name of the city was in 1061 recorded as Egire; in 1179 it was known as Egra; from 1322 as Eger and the surrounding territory as Regio Egere and Provincia Egrensis; after the 14th century also as Cheb or Chba. From 1850 it was given the twin official names of Eger and Cheb. From 1938 to 1945 it was one of the municipalities in Sudetenland.

The twin towns of Cheb are Hof in Germany, Rheden in the Netherlands, Nizhny Tagil in Russia and Bắc Ninh in Vietnam.

History

The earliest settlement excavated in the area was a Slavic stronghold at what is now called Jánský Vrch, north of the town-centre. In 807 the district of today's Cheb was included in the new margraviate of East Franconia, which belonged at first to the Babenbergs, but from 906 to the margraves (marquis) of Vohburg. Depold II of Vohburg built the castle about which the town then grew. In 1179 town status was achieved. In 1149, by the marriage of Adelheid of Vohburg to the emperor Frederick I, Eger (Cheb) came into the possession of the House of Swabia, and remained in the hands of the emperors until the early 13th century, during which time it became an Imperial Free City.

Khaled (musician)

Khaled Hadj Ibrahim (Arabic: خالد حاج إبراهيم‎, born 29 February 1960), better known as Khaled, is an Algerian raï singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born in Sidi El Houari in Oran Province of Algeria. He began recording in his early teens under the name Cheb Khaled (الشاب خالد, Arabic for "Young Man" Khaled, as opposed to the traditionalist Sheikh elders) and has become the most internationally famous Algerian singer in the Arab world and across many continents. His popularity has earned him the unofficial title "King of Raï". His most famous songs are "Didi", "Aïcha" and "C'est la vie".

Biography

Khaled Hadj Ibrahim was born in 1960 in Oran's Eckmühl neighborhood. At the age of 14, he founded the Cinq Étoiles (Five Stars) band and started performing in nightclubs and during marriages.

In the 1980s, Khaled started producing and singing raï songs. He moved to France in 1986.

On 12 January 1995, Khaled married Samira Diabi, 27, with whom he has four daughters and one son.

French frigate Oise

Oise, originally named Algérien, was a frigate in the Free French Naval Forces during World War II and the French Navy post-war. The ship was originally built as USS Cronin (DE-107), an American Cannon-class destroyer escort named for Cornelius Cronin, a sailor who was awarded the Medal of Honor during the American Civil War.

History

World War II

During World War II, the Cronin was transferred to the Free French Naval Forces under lend lease on 23 January 1944, and renamed Algérien.

Algérien participated in Operation Anvil-Dragoon on 15 August 1944.

Ownership of the vessel was transferred to France on 21 April 1952 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. She was renamed Oise shortly before being transferred back to the US Navy.

Cheb Nasro

Cheb Nasro is Raï most prolific artist with more than 130 albums to his credit. Nasro has recorded hits including "Ndirek Amour" (I choose you My Love) "Ma Rkhalinich" (Do not Leave Me) and "Enfin Enfin" (finally finally). he is the only Raï artist to sign with an American label, Miles Copeland ARK21/Mondo Melodia.

Biography

Nasro was born on 30 November 1960 in Aïn Témouchent and then grew up in the western Algerian city of Oran. His first foray into music came at the age of two when his uncle bought him a drabouka (traditional drum). As a youngster, he often accompanied Cheb Zahounie the wedding makes her solo debut at the age of 17 at a local club Nasro received a standing ovation and was invited to the performances daily from 3 am to 4:00 at the club. within a year, he recorded his debut album and had begun to perform throughout Europe. Despite competition Nasro and Cheb Hasni became close friends. Hope of Nasro early career began to fade after the tragic murder of Cheb Hasni September 29, 1994, while Raï many artists emigrated to Europe or North America, he was one of the few to continue singing in his homeland. He later said "I was very skinny from worry and moved around a lot".
