There are new allegations that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, this time near the capital Damascus in the Goutha region. As always, details about the alleged attack are unclear but there are suggestions that the nerve agent Sarin was used. Even estimates of the numbers killed vary wildly from dozens to more than 600. This video looks at the most recent attack and why there are always questions over the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

A thousand anti-government protesters storm the headquarters of the Thai army.

Full Story:

Around one-thousand Thai anti-government protesters forced their way into the compound of the Royal Thai Army headquarters in Bangkok on Friday.

It is the latest escalation of rallies by demonstrators, seeking to topple Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Some protesters climbed over the fence of the compound, while others forced a gate open to let their truck into the compound as security and army headquarters staff stood nearby.

Anti-government protesters have stormed ministries and government facilities since the start of the week in a bid to force Yingluck to resign.

Elsewhere in the capital on Friday, hundreds of anti-government protesters gathered outside the headquarters of Yingluck\'s ruling party.

Four Chinese military aircraft have flown over Japan\'s Okinawa Islands and Miyako Island for the past three days in a row. In response, Japan also scrambled fighter jets on Sunday (October 27) for a third consecutive day.

It was reported that two Chinese early warning planes and two bombers were spotted over the area between Okinawa\'s mainland and Miyako Island on Sunday. The aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometres south of Okinawa before returning to the East China Sea.

Japan\'s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reportedly approved the use of air force planes to shoot down unmanned Chinese aircraft in Japanese airspace.

HMS Illustrious has arrived in the Philippines to assist with the distribution of aid for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Its task is to deliver humanitarian aid from the government in the UK, taking over from HMS Daring on the mercy mission to the stricken country. Daring had been distributing aid and assisting villagers in remote communities on islands to the north east of Panay. Before its call to help, HMS Illustrious had been patrolling for pirates off the coast of Somalia. Lusty, as the ship is known, was due to arrive back in the UK in time for Christmas, but in order to assist in the relief effort, the servicemen and women on board are cancelling their break. Report by Louise Hulland.

Japan scrambles fighter jets to respond Chinese planes
Japan scrambles fighter jets to respond Chinese planes
  • Order:

  • Updated: 29 Nov 2013
Originally published on October 28, 2013 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Four Chinese military aircraft have flown over Japan's Okinawa Islands and Miyako Island for the past three days in a row. In response, Japan also scrambled fighter jets on Sunday (October 27) for a third consecutive day. It was reported that two Chinese early warning planes and two bombers were spotted over the area between Okinawa's mainland and Miyako Island on Sunday. The aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometres south of Okinawa before returning to the East China Sea. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reportedly approved the use of air force planes to shoot down unmanned Chinese aircraft in Japanese airspace. According to Reuters, "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also told his troops on Sunday that Japan would not tolerate the use of force to change the region's status quo, an expression used by Japanese politicians and security experts to refer to what they see as China's aggressive maritime expansion. "Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, asked about Abe's comments, said Japanese leaders had been repeatedly making "provocative" remarks. "This once again shows that Japanese politicians are deceiving themselves with their arrogance and guilty conscience," she told a daily news briefing. "Ties between Asia's two largest economies deteriorated sharply after Japan bought three of the disputed East China Sea islets from a private owner in September 2012, sparking protests and boycotts of Japanese goods across China." -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
