Study circle: Leon Trotsky and the Power of Ideas

Are you intrigued to know more about revolutionary leader, Leon Trotsky? Do you want to learn about the importance of the Russian Revolution, to understand why Stalin’s bureaucracy emerged, to know where leadership comes from and how to change society?

The problems faced by Trotsky are still the problems of today: war, hunger, poverty and the lack of democratic rights in supposedly democratic societies.

This study circle will discuss Leon Trotsky: His Life and Ideas by Helen Gilbert and is the perfect starting point for those keen to explore why Trotsky’s analysis remains indispensable to solving the contemporary problems of our planet.

Absolutely no prior knowledge is required, and everyone is welcome.

Dinner served at 6:30 pm for an $8 donation.

Radical Women meeting in honour of Transgender Day of Remembrance: Unpacking Transphobia*

Join in discussion of Radical Women’s statement about transphobia in the feminist movement. RW explains how radical feminists’ biological determinism leads to a male-phobic and transphobic deadend — twisting feminism, a driving force for human liberation, into its opposite.

Come with your ideas of how to fight the oppression that trans people face under capitalism. Brainstorm how to advance trans issues in political and social justice movements. Everyone is welcome!

Help organise a Free Chelsea Manning contingent for Pride March 2014

You are invited to a planning meeting to kick off organising for a Free Chelsea Manning contingent in the 2014 Pride March. Contingents to free Chelsea have been features in Pride Marches right across the United States.

Chelsea Manning is a hero not a criminal. She blew the whistle on hidden U.S. war crimes and is now the most high profile transgender political prisoner on the planet.

A U.S. military court-martial convicted Private Manning of espionage and sentenced her to 35 years imprisonment. Prior to her trial, Chelsea served three years in prison, 10 months of this in solitary confinement. Her treatment is an example of how far the U.S. state is willing to go to cover up such crimes.

When we take a stand in solidarity with Chelsea we are not only supporting the campaign to free her but can also highlight the appalling treatment of trans* people in prison.
