Angela Merkel\'s conservatives are still well ahead in the latest opinion polls but her coalition appears increasingly threatened.

A survey by Forsa for Stern magazine puts her Christian Democrats (CDU) on 39 percent, a score unchanged from a previous poll.

It seems touch and go as to whether the chancellor\'s partners the Free Democrats (FDP) - already reeling from defeat in Bavaria at the weekend - will get enough votes to enter parliament.

In one poll, the FDP sit at five percent - the minimum needed to maintain a parliamentary presence.

Given the impossibility of her party gaining enough votes to govern alone, Merkel needs votes to go the Free Democrats\' way. But to call openly for some people to back another party would be a risky strategy.

So at a meeting in Potsdam, Merkel called on voters to cast both their permitted ballots for her CDU.

Anti-government protesters in Bangkok have forced their way into the Finance Ministry to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Thousands of demonstrators marched on 12 state buildings including government offices, military bases and TV studios.

The protests have been sparked by a controversial amnesty bill.

The legislation, would have allowed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra , the brother of the current prime minister, to return to Thailand without serving a jail term for corruption.

In one poll, the FDP sit at five percent - the minimum needed to maintain a parliamentary presence. Given the impossibility of her party gaining enough votes to govern alone, Merkel needs votes to go the Free Democrats' way. But to call openly for some people to back another party would be a risky strategy. So at a meeting in Potsdam, Merkel called on voters to cast both their permitted ballots for her CDU. "That way you'll enable me to continue to be your chancellor," she told supporters. "The vote will be a tight race." Should the Free Democrats fail to reach their five percent target as they did in Bavaria (they gained just three percent), the chancellor would probably seek a grand coalition with Peer Steinbrück's opposition Social Democrats, as was the case during her first term in office. A poster showing the leader giving a rude finger gesture has apparently done him little harm. At a rally in Emden he dealt deftly with an egg hurled in his direction. Polls give the SPD about 25 percent of the vote. The Social Democrats' allies the Greens are in trouble with their share threatening to fall below 10 percent. One of the leaders' of the Greens, former environment minister Juergen Trittin has been forced to apologise over calls back in 1981 from within his branch of the party for sex with minors to be decriminalised. "I didn't do enough to oppose them," he said. Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

As its military and economy have grown, so too have China's dreams of dominating an island chain centered on Taiwan and including Japan's Senkakus. China's increased belligerence in the region is part of its plan to control the Yellow Sea, the South China Sea and the larger East China Sea. Its military doctrine refers to dominance over the "first island chain," which encompasses the East China Sea. The next step is dominance over what Beijing calls the second island chain extending from Japan to Indonesia. Some analysts have even speculated about plans for a third island chain strategy extending as far as Hawaii. As part of its plans, China on Saturday announced an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea effective Nov. 23. Its military will take "defensive emergency measures" if aircraft enter the area without reporting flight plans or identifying themselves. China's defense ministry warned in a statement that all aircraft that fail to comply with its new rules for transit through the zone could be shot down. Media reports say that the ministry issued a map showing the new East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, including what the Chinese call the Diaoyu Islands. The map of the new defense zone, pulled off a Chinese website, shows that it overlaps Japan's defense zone over the Senkakus, a group of uninhabited islands located south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan that sit atop significant oil deposits. China in recent years has also laid claim to the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea and has conducted nine incursions into territory claimed by the Philippines. Beijing's goal is to secure the waters from Japan's home islands, along the Ryukyu chain, through Taiwan and to the Strait of Malacca, encompassing the South China Sea. Tensions escalated in February when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe denounced what he said was China's use of fire-control radar in January twice on Japanese targets in the East China Sea. Japan's Defense Ministry said that it sent jets up 306 times in the 12 months ended in March 2013 and 149 times in the April-September period in response to Chinese incursions. The islands became Japan's territory after it defeated China in their 1894-1895 war. It was only after a 1968 United Nations survey reported the huge oil and gas potential of the area that Beijing began to protest the 1972 U.S. return of the islets to Japanese control as part of Okinawa. The U.S. is obligated to defend the islands under the 1960 U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, which covers all territories under Japanese administration, including the Senkakus http://news.investors.com/112513-680586-beijing-east-china-sea-maritime-grab.htm?ven=fox_businesscp&src;=aurlaeu Japan govt receives support over China fly zone, airlines comply http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/20027893/japan-govt-receives-support-over-china-fly-zone-but-airlines-comply/

Gunman at Yale University Today November 25, 2013 - Campus on Lockdown. UPDATE 12:10 p.m. EST: In the latest update from the emergency section of Yale's website, the university said the lockdown remains in place. "There are confirmed reports of a person with a gun on campus on the Old Campus. The shelter-in-place/lockdown continues," the message read. "Teams from Yale Police, New Haven and the State Police are on the scene and are actively searching for any gunman. THIS IS NOT A TEST. Call 911 with any information." While the school said the alleged gunman was seen in the vicinity of Old Campus, authorities have set up a perimeter that includes "pretty much all of the Yale campus," a New Haven dispatcher told the Boston Globe. UPDATE 11:48 a.m. EST: Yale sent out the following updated emergency message on its website: "SHELTER IN PLACE/LOCKDOWN REMAINS ON CAMPUS. IF OFF CAMPUS, STAY AWAY." Original story: A person with a gun has been reported Monday on the Old Campus at Yale University, prompting the school to alert anyone on the New Haven, Conn., campus to shelter in place. At 11:02 a.m. EST, Yale sent the following text message to students: "Confirmed report of person with a gun on/near Old Campus. SHELTER IN PLACE. This is NOT a test." An earlier message sent to what the school called the "Yale community" said the report was unconfirmed: "New Haven Police have received an anonymous call from a phone booth in the 300 block of Columbus Avenue (between Howard Avenue and Hallock Street) reporting a person on the Yale Campus with a gun," the message read. "There have been NO confirmations or sightings of this person. Yale and New Haven Police are in the area. If you have information, please call 911 immediately. The Yale Police Department advises those on campus to remain in their current location until there is additional information."

With rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan, this report asks whether the tribal borderlands are a ticking time bomb of extremism. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65884&bid;=2 Out of bounds for most Pakistanis, this report gains rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan. The army claims it has South Waziristan under control, but is it a ticking time bomb of extremism? In a military hospital in Islamabad, hundreds of "profoundly damaged and disabled" soldiers are being treated. They've come from the western tribal belt, where for the last nine years Pakistan has been waging a largely hidden war against extremists. "There has been this double game that has gone on for many years, of Pakistan supporting the NATO presence in Afghanistan and at the same time allowing the Afghan Taliban to operate against the NATO forces", explains Pakistan's foremost expert on Islamists in the region, Ahmed Rashid. He claims the government's duplicity has radicalised a local variant of the Taliban. "There is now a full-scale extremist movement in Pakistan that is trying to overthrow the State." The agents of some of the worst acts of global terrorism inhabit this remote frontier. Yet many local villagers claim life under the Taliban "was normal" and "nobody was afraid". They argue the army intervention in the region has only been destructive. In an attempt to win hearts and minds, the army has opened a high school for girls, which aid workers argue is "critical for countering extremism". However Pakistan's Taliban vow they're determined "to escalate the war". ABC Australia
