With severe water crisis looming large over the city, and some parts of Peth areas already suffering from water problems for the last couple of days, the two-and-a-half-century-old Peshwa era underground water system is lying defunct for many years
The ancient water system, if not defunct, can fulfill the water needs of some Peth areas during water crisis. Presently the underground water system can’t provide potable water as constructions and damage to the pipeline has led to contamination of water from Swargate towards Peth areas.
Had the system been conserved today it could have supplied water to the inhabitants of Budhwar Peth, Guruwar Peth and Shaniwar Peth.
When contacted, water supply head of the Pune Municipal Corporation, VG Kulkarni said, “Till Sarasbaug some people are using the water for non-potable purpose but after that, owing to heavy contamination, citizens of Peth areas avoid using the water.”
Balaji Bajirao alias Nanasaheb Peshwa had built two dams in 1749-50 in Katraj on a stream by constructing big walls to hold water and supply it to the old city of Pune and Shaniwarwada.
According to Krushnaji Vinayak Sohoni, Nanasaheb verified the ample water stock and decided to carry the water from Katraj to Shaniwarwada and other Peth areas through underground stony tunnel.
For utilising this water there were many private and public water tanks. There were 80 cisterns available till 1914.
On March 26, 1879, the ownership of this Peshwa era underground water supply system was transferred to the Pune Municipal Council by British Government.
At the same time the possession of the land of about 165 acres of both the dams at Katraj were also transferred to the municipal council later.
After constructing the Khadakwasla dam, it started supplying water to Pune.
Despite that till 1915 the city used to get 7 lakh gallons of water every day from Katraj lake through the underground pipeline.
The Katraj tap ends at Ganesh Darwaja in the bastion, where a chamber was made, in Shaniwarwada. According to the book
‘Katrajcha Nal’ written by LR Gokhale in 1914, there are outlets at Omkareshwar mandir and Amruteshwar Ghat in Shaniwar Peth.
In January and February 2004 due to the effort of Sriram Bhagwat, Srikrishna Bhagwat and Nandakumar Bangude, the water system once again came into limelight. But owing to the contamination, the water system lies defunct presently, thereby of no use during times of crisis.

The Sinhagad fort though now in ruins has many a tale of courage to tell. Sinhagad also was the summer house of the great freedom fighter BalGangadharTilak. The cottage is still well maintained.

Poem By: Virat Sharda
The Poem :
The sun would adieu the arc of marine drive,
a transition from a peaceful sunset to aglow night of the lights ,
both preserving a soothing sense of zeal in their own ways.
To a dejected it is uplift,
to a motivated it is rejoice.
Which wholly sums up the state of the state of Maharashtra.
They call it a place of vast numbers, indeed,
miss not the innumerable enthusiasts of the lot.
Might lies in the size and blood of it,
something its name concisely says: "Maha" + "Rashtra".
the bygones saw the transfer of power on the land in plenty.
Yadavas surrendered to Khalji,
Tughlaqs reined the land.
Bahamani sultanate ruled century and a half.
Shivaji roared as the Marathas marched,
the Mughals were triumphed,
to mark a reign big in size and imposing in nature.
Abdali disintegrated the Maratha rule.
British annexed next, marking a long period of wait.
Tilak and Ranade;
Sarvarkar, Naoroji, leaders of the masses,
integrated in efforts and coherent with objective saw India free,
future had rise of the state.
On the west lie the protective heights of the ghats,
Sindhu Sagar forms the coast:
A virtue of nature's art.
Nashik stages the kumbha mela;
Come the saints, come the sages, the devotees
to worship, to purify their souls.
Nagpur for oranges, Pune for education.
Aurangabad for history, while Mumbai for dreams.
The paintings in Ajanta,
Sculptures of Ellora,
Divine presence in elephanta caves;
Induction of wonder and discovery of self, of divine.
The royal forts,
Mythological shrines,
A look back in time,
One was once oblivious about.
Diversity of life in sanctuaries,
and a psalm in the voice of waters.
Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis
Shared the same shed all the years.
Lord Ganesha comes to the houses,
And charms the sea later.
Aashadi Ekadashi integrates the mob,
Dahi Handi adorns Janamashtmi.
Festivals unite them all,
goodness would always prevail and evil would fall.
The nation acknowledges Mumbai for its desi delicacies : pani puri, pav bhaji
All would still marvel at the imposing taj hotel , and the historic gateway of india.
We remember the fearless Shivaji , shivaji terminus built in his honour.
The art on celluloid created would make laugh, cry, ponder and rise.
Life for all, work for the ones craving.
The grandeur possessions at Nariman Point,
and the daily toil, all being a part of it.
The ports converge global business to the place.
Millions are made and lost each day on the Dalal Street.
Industries do rise, do fall
but the dynamics here never stall.
The nation hummed to the tunes of the Mangeshkars,
Sachin united India with his game and is regarded as the greatest.
The Maratha regiment,
produced soldiers as strong as bull,
and fiercely served the nation.
People devoted their hearts and souls to Shirdi Sai Baba.
A region of honor and pride,
Of chances so bright.
Agriculture to industry,
It still rises high.
The sun would set, the sun would fall
does not make the life to halt, but to look BEYOND THE DARK

Tilak and Ranade;
Sarvarkar, Naoroji, leaders of the masses,
integrated in efforts and coherent with objective saw India free,
future had rise of the state.
On the west lie the protective heights of the ghats,
Sindhu Sagar forms the coast:
A virtue of nature's art.
Nashik stages the kumbha mela;
Come the saints, come the sages, the devotees
to worship, to purify their souls.
Nagpur for oranges, Pune for education.
Aurangabad for history, while Mumbai for dreams.
The paintings in Ajanta,
Sculptures of Ellora,
Divine presence in elephanta caves;
