It is sometimes erroneously written as "", which has persisted so strongly in America that it is no longer considered incorrect there, and can even be found in its dictionaries (an example of folk etymology). In modern French the term chaise longue can refer to any long reclining chair such as a deckchair.
A duchesse brisée is similar, but looks like a sideways-facing chair together with a long footstool. A chaise longue with a backrest at both ends is known as a récamier.
A short sofa of the Empire style, having arms of unequal height connected by a back with a sloping top, is called a méridienne, especially if it is made of wickerwork.
