Bull Bay is located on the south east coast of Jamaica 10 miles to the East of Kingston in the parish of St Andrew.

Floods[link]

Bull Bay is located in the flood plain of a number of rivers: Salt Spring River, Chalky River, Bull Park River, Spring Gut River and Cane River, and consequently has been the subject of a number of floods. The land is low-lying (between 0 and 150 feet above sea level). The drainage basin is composed of relatively hard and impervious rock structures.

The floods in September 2002 followed heavy rainfall that month (3,500 mm), thanks to Tropical Storm Lili. One person died. Local residents described the flood as being the most disastrous since Hurricane Gilbert in September 1988. A contributary factor to the flooding has been identified by residents as silt. Some of this comes from local quarries, particularly belonging to Jamaica Gypsum & Quarries Ltd., but local deforestation by residents seeking firewood was also identified as a contributing factor. The dumping of garbage was another factor identified.

The Ten miles and Eleven miles areas of Bull Bay are regularly subject to floods. The residents have complained that they have lost livestock, personal belongings, cars, and houses. They also complained of increased problems with insects and pests, bad roads, and resultant health problems.^[1]

Horace Andy (born Horace Hinds on 19 February 1951)^[1] is a roots reggae songwriter and singer, known for his distinctive vocals and hit songs such as "Government Land", "Angel", "Five Man Army" and a cover version of "Ain't No Sunshine".

Early days[link]

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Hinds recorded his first single in 1967 for producer Phil Pratt.^[1] "This is a Black Man's Country" failed to make an impact, and it wouldn't be until 1970 that he achieved a breakthrough. After unsuccessfully auditioning at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One as a duo along with Frank Melody, he successfully auditioned on his own a few days later.^[1] Dodd decided Hinds should record as Horace Andy, partly to capitalize on the popularity of Bob Andy, and partly to avoid comparisons with his cousin, Justin Hinds, with whom his singing style at the time showed a resemblance.^[1] "Got To Be Sure", the song he had auditioned with, became his first release for Studio One. The following two years saw the release of further singles such as "See a Man's Face", "Night Owl", "Fever", and "Mr. Bassie". One of Andy's most enduring songs, "Skylarking", first appeared on Dodd's Jamaica Today compilation album, but after proving a sound system success, it was released as a single, going on to top the Jamaican chart.^[1] The next few years saw Andy regularly in the reggae charts with further singles for Dodd such as "Something on My Mind", "Love of a Woman", "Just Say Who", and "Every Tongue Shall Tell", as well as singles for other producers such as "Lonely Woman" (for Derrick Harriott), "Girl I Love You" (Ernest and Joseph Hoo Kim), "Love You to Want Me" and "Delilah" (Gussie Clarke), and "Get Wise", "Feel Good", and "Money Is The Root of All Evil" for Phil Pratt. Andy had a second Jamaican number one single in 1973 with "Children of Israel".^[1] Andy's most successful association with a producer, however, was with Bunny Lee in the middle part of the 1970s. This era produced a series of singles now regarded as classics such as a re-recorded "Skylarking", "Just Say Who", "Don't Try To Use Me", "You Are My Angel", "Zion Gate", "I've Got to Get Away", and a new version of "Something on My Mind".^[1]

In 1977, Andy moved to Hartford, Connecticut, with his first wife, Claudette, where he recorded for Everton DaSilva, including the In The Light album and its associated dub album, and singles such as "Do You Love My Music" and "Government Land".^[2] Andy set up his own Rhythm label, which became an outlet for his work with DaSilva. The association with the producer was brought to an abrupt end when DaSilva was murdered in 1979.^[1] Andy's 1978 album Pure Ranking had anticipated the rise of dancehall reggae, and he was a key figure in the early development of the genre, confirmed by 1982's Dance Hall Style album.^[1] Andy continued to record with a variety of producers in the first half of the 1980s. In 1985, with his second wife Caroline, he relocated to Ladbroke Grove, London, and he recorded in the United Kingdom as well as regularly visiting Jamaica for further recording work.

Mainstream success with Massive Attack[link]

1990 saw Andy's profile further raised when he began collaborating with Bristol trip hop pioneers Massive Attack, going on to contribute to all five of their albums (the only artist to do so), most notably with "Angel" (a new version of "You are My Angel") released on their third album, Mezzanine and most recently on their 2010 release Heligoland, on the tracks "Splitting the Atom" and "Girl I Love You." In the mid-1990s he also worked with Mad Professor, releasing the albums Life Is For Living and Roots and Branches. He continues to record new music, with the Living in the Flood album released in 1999 on Massive Attack's Melankolic record label, and Mek It Bun in 2002. He also featured on the world music project, 1 Giant Leap, and on the Easy Star All-Stars 2006 album, Radiodread.

He is a Rastafarian. Some of his lyrics on the subject of homosexuality have been considered controversial. Andy stated that Trojan Records only agreed to release his album On Tour after removing a track containing the lyrics, "The Father never make Adam and Steve, he make Adam and Eve".^[3][4][5]

Bull announced via his blog that the upcoming album would be available in early 2011. Stating that: "It’s going to be a continuation of the narrative of my first album, but will have a very different feel and mood overall."^[10] The album focuses on topics such as medical recovery, war, love, Asperger's syndrome, alcoholism, and pride. Face was released in December 2011. The 12-track album includes ten brand new songs as well as the 2010 tracks America and John Lennon.

Dan Bull announced via his website that he was aiming to get into the UK and Global charts with his new track "Sharing is caring." He offered it on iTunes, Play.com, Amazon and on torrent via The Pirate Bay. To people who bought all 10 versions of his track, they would be thanked in a music video of his, given that they notify him with sufficient proof. The lyrical content in the different versions of his track were targeted at popular social networking sites, Facebook, Twitter. and Google+. He also offered the instrumental by itself, voice only versions, and remixes of each track.^[11] The Animal Circus remix reached the top of the Reggae charts on Amazon UK, and second place in the World category.^[12]

Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi (alias brokep) (born 13 September 1978 Uddevalla, Sweden) is a computer expert with Norwegian and Finnish roots.^[1][2] He is best known for being a co-founder and ex-spokesperson of The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent search engine.^[3]

Before the founding of the Pirate Bay Sunde worked for a large German medical company. In 2003 he became a member of Sweden's Piratbyrån (The Pirate Bureau) and a few months later Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm started The Pirate Bay with Sunde as the spokesperson.^[4] He remained The Pirate Bay's spokesperson until late 2009 (three years after the ownership of the site transferred to Reservella). In August 2011 Sunde and, fellow Pirate Bay co-founder, Fredrik Neij launched file-sharing site Bayfiles, that aims to "legally" share.^[5] Sunde speaks Swedish, Norwegian, English, Finnish and German. He is a vegan.^[6]

The Pirate Bay Trial[link]

On 31 January 2008, The Pirate Bay operators - Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström (CEO of The Pirate Bay's former ISP) - were charged with "assisting [others in] copyright infringement".^[7] The trial began on 16 February 2009. On 17 April 2009, Sunde and his co-defendants were found to be guilty of "assisting in making copyright content available" in the Stockholm district court (tingsrätt). Each defendant was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay damages of 30 million SEK (approximately €2,740,900 or US$3,620,000), to be apportioned between the four defendants.^[8] After the verdict a press conference was held where Sunde held up a handwritten IOU statement claiming that is all the damages he will pay, adding "Even if I had any money I would rather burn everything I own and not even give them the ashes. They could have the job of picking them up. That's how much I hate the media industry."^[9] The defendants lawyers have appealed to the Svea Court of Appeal together with a request for a retrial in the district court because of the recent suspicion of bias on behalf of judge Tomas Norström.^[10] Under Swedish law, the verdict is not effective until all appeals have been processed.

Flattr[link]

Flattr is a micropayments system started by Peter Sunde and Linus Olsson, which enables viewers of websites to make small donations by clicking a "Flattr this" button. At the time of the projects's announcement in February 2010, Sunde explained that "the money you pay each month will be spread evenly among the buttons you click in a month. We want to encourage people to share money as well as content."^[11] Flattr itself takes a 10 percent fee from the user's monthly flatrate.

After Wikileaks's initial publication of the U.S. Diplomatic Cables, companies like Visa, MasterCard, Paypal and Moneybookers blocked donations and money transfers to the site. Flattr, however, continued allowing donations to Wikileaks. Sunde commented "We [Flattr] think their work is exactly what is needed and if we can help just a little bit, we will."^[12]
